Olney interview:

Mike and Mike said 30 seconds left, tell us what you know. Here's all he said, which wasn't much, word for word:

"Here's what we know, bottom line. The Red Sox are not putting a stop to this, Theo Epstein is not putting a stop to this, nobody is saying it's not going to happen, I think if he get's the right offer he's going to go."

Pretty much nothing.

I think Buster is saying Theo and the Red Sox aren't putting a stop to the speculation, not that Theo and the Red Sox aren't putting a stop to the Cubs efforts. It just sounds like more "well they aren't denying it, so it must be true" reporting. I hope that is the case, but I wouldn't get excited about that.

As much as it sucks that we can't get any good info on this, it's very impressive how secretive the Cubs and Red Sox have been. The media seems lost without Hendry or his people feeding them info.

At this point, i'm sure the Red Sox have granted permission and Theo has or is in the process of interviewing and deciding with his family. I don't buy that just because he interviewed, he's a lock to come though. I think he's genuinely gathering information and taking time to make a decision. The Red Sox wouldn't be postponing their coaching search or waiting this long to simply deny things if they haven't granted permission. I think it's pretty clear that the first news we'll hear will be that Theo is GM or not, not whether or not the Red Sox have granted permission.

I could see a scenario unfold where Theo agrees, but the cpompensation part drags on for a few days possibly. That said, even in that case, both clubs have incentive to make it work quickly, since both teams offseason plans would basically be on hold until this is figured out. Hopefully tomorrow gives us something good to talk about.

Kaplan with a ridiculous article. Geez, Kaplan, why don't you tell Theo to not even bother.

So while Theo Epstein is a highly coveted name that will bring tremendous hope to the franchise, he better be coming here with his eyes open and not thinking that the Cubs job is less of a pressure cooker, as some in Boston who know him have indicated to me

Going to have to print this article out, so I can wipe my ass with it in the AM.

Don't forget to credit @Kapman.

I feel like a junkie. I have had a handful of twitter feeds open the last few days. Something is going to break. Didn't Ricketts say that by the end of this week he was hoping to have all of his interviews completed?

I am thinking worst case scenario will be an announcement of the new GM early next week.

The job here has a lot of pressure it's just a different type of pressure. Fans will give Theo a little more leeway here knowing that this isn't going to happen overnight. A championship team is going to have to be built here. In Boston they wanted results like yesterday and had a very similar drought. Kaplan insinuating that for some reason Theo is an idiot and thinks there is no pressure here is asinine. There is plenty of pressure but its a little different with different obstacles and challenges.

It’s hard to believe that Theo Epstein and the Red Sox are still dancing, almost a full week after the Cubs filed paperwork with Bud Selig’s office announcing their desire to talk to him. Many around baseball expected some resolution between Boston owner John Henry and Epstein by last Friday evening but the situation grinds on. The longer it does, the more people expect an ending that winds up with Epstein jumping to the Cubs but the reality is this could extend for another week, maybe more.

There has been no indication that Tom Ricketts has been granted permission to talk to Epstein, and Major League Baseball rules give the two sides seven days to talk about [after?] permission has been formally granted. Henry, it appears, has tried to work out a solution that will keep Epstein with the Red Sox but it’s a very delicate situation. Keeping Epstein would probably mean increasing his authority, and that means decreasing the authority for team president Larry Lucchino. Would Henry do that? And would Epstein stay if he didn’t? Will the Cubs and Red Sox be able to agree on compensation? The same old questions are in play and zero news is being made. Something’s got to give, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Kaplan's blog post is Paul Sullivan bad. A GM has to adjust to day baseball? What does he think, Theo rolls out of bed at 2pm?

So if they fire him, we don't have to give them anything, right?

From the Boston Herald article:

In the end, this has nothing to do with ending another curse or taking on the cosmic challenge of Bartman or the Billy Goat. That’s nonsense. This is not: The Cubs will offer Epstein a good job, for good money, in a great city. How can a good, smart, dispassionate baseball man turn that down?

And if Theo is still on the fence, the Cubs can throw in one more thing to seal the deal. They can promise him his old pal Lucchino won’t be coming with him.

How is everyone feeling at this point? My leaning is still that Theo will come, but that might be wishful thinking.

Thinking about things critically, I'm confident he will come, but the Cubs fan in me is saying this is all an elaborate tease.

I think that whatever's going on behind the scenes is so quiet that we have no real idea what's going on. But if it were as simple as a flat "no," then there wouldn't be any need to keep it this quiet this long. My guess is he's either coming or he's going to Billy Beane us where he acts interested and then bails at the last minute.

Who is Tom Shaer? Evidently he's a Chicago media guy who was on NESN this morning. He said Theo could get a 5 year deal for 3 per from Ricketts. Said the organizational infrastructure needs to be redone, as Boston's is much better and deeper, something Theo is used to. Said Ricketts is very far into his search, including his B level candidates. Also dropped a bombshell saying expected payroll to always remain around 100 million. Anyone know who this guy is?

He's a Chicago sports guy who apparently doesn't know anything if he thinks the payroll is 100M

Pretty much this for me. I'm certainly hopeful Theo comes to be our new GM, but I won't believe it until it actually happens.
