Went to the Sun Times to see if they had anything new on this since the Tribune doesn't, only to find out that Chris Rongey, random dude from the Score, dated Ginger Zee.

[expletive] him.

MLB radio reports Esptein Contacted Jim Hendry last week to ask what it's like to work for Ricketts.

MLB Radio reports that Epstein contacted Jim Hendry a week ago about what it's like to work for Ricketts and the organization in general. Hendry reportedly had great things to say. (Hat tip to reader Michael on this one)

Heyman: Epstein still the Red Sox GM, but rumors about the Cubs are swirling.

For those who haven't/won't click on the link (smart move):

The big news out of Chicago this weekend was that Theo Epstein might have been spotted at a Lincoln Park Starbucks. Not kidding. That came via a Cubs fan who said he was "99.9 percent'' sure it was the celebrated, elusive longtime Red Sox general manager, and it shows how secretive the Cubs' GM search is being kept by relatively new owner Tom Ricketts.

These guys have to dig low...

Rival executive on Theo Epstein: "If he met with the Cubs, what it means is that if he gets the offer he wants, he's gone [to Chicago]."

Not really news, but it's something....I guess.

Rosenthal was on with Mully and Hanley... again, not really news, but he thinks that the longer this drags on, the more likely Theo is to jump ship.

And that feels right. The longer it goes, particularly with so much silence, is as much evidence that Epstein is strongly considering the move as any "rumor."

Interesting article by NY Baseball digests Mike Silva. Purely speculative but a good read.

Better question is would Epstein be ok with Castro as his booty? As much as he made a name for himself by leading the National League in hits, Castro’s game has tons of warts on it. He doesn’t walk (35 times in 715 plate appearances) and his attitude is less than stellar. Chicago manager Mike Quade took him to task late in the season for behavior that isn’t acceptable at the tee-ball level, much less the big leagues. Cameras showed Castro not paying attention and reaching into his pocket for sunflower seeds during pitches. As the pitcher went into his motion and delivered the pitch, Castro kicked at the dirt and then walked toward the outfield, never looking toward home plate when the pitch was thrown. Maybe that concentration is why he’s made 56 errors in two seasons.

Castro is young and talented, but Epstein is the kind of GM that could bring a sustainable winning environment to Wrigley Field. Since Jose Reyes is a free agent, the smart move would be for Epstein to accept a deal of Castro for his services, and then make an all-out play for Jose Reyes. The Cubs are only a couple of years removed from being a contender. There is talent on this team and Reyes leading off and playing shortstop might give them the kind of energy they have been missing.

Obviously, this is pure speculation. We have no idea whether a Starlin Castro-Theo Epstein deal has even been considered. What I do knows is that Epstein is not going to be let out of his Boston contract for nothing, that is unless John Henry and company are so enthralled with his assistant Ben Cherington they are willing to let Theo leave without a fight.

That doesn't look like a good read. It looks like pure idiocy.

Because it evidently bears repeating:

The Marlins gave two scrubs to the White Sox for their manager to quiet any complaints about obvious tampering.

No compensation has ever been provided for a general manager. The Cubs will not set precedent with the face of their franchise.

I agree that the longer this drags on without hearing something, anything about Theo sticking around, the more likely it is that he's leaving.

I need to be more clear. When I say interesting, I mean from a standpoint that many feel that Henry will indeed want compensation and Starlin's name keeps coming up.

The writer is merely suggesting if Castro were indeed traded, Reyes would be a guy that could replace him.

Remember a few years ago when that guy called the Cubs public number and asked to speak to Jim Hendry?

Then he told his assistant that the Cubs should sign Rich Harden?

Then the secretary said they would look into it and to have a nice day?

And then everyone laughed about how convinced he was that the Cubs were pursuing Harden?

Then he told everyone to stop laughing at him because he had cancer?

The Cubs ended up signing Harden the next day. Let's hope the guy in the purple shirt is the same dude.

Purple shirt guy is going to be on Waddle and Silvy within the hour.

In 1994, the Cubs traded Hector Trinidad to the Twins for Andy MacPhail. He didn't become GM right away (President and CEO), but executive trades do happen.

But no one in the universe would trade Starlin Castro for Theo Epstein.
