The longer this lingers the less likely it is that Theo takes/gets the job.

B/c Ricketts and Henry aren't commenting the speculation will go on until the Cubs hire someone or Theo has a presser where he says he's staying.

It really hasn't been going on all that long. I don't know if Theo is an observing Jew, but if he is, he probably hasn't been doing much for the last couple of days. They may or may not interview this week and then the negotiations start.

I also don't know why everyone thinks it is so preposterous that the Red Sox will be seeking compensation.

Dammit, I wish I made up an unconfirmable story about Theo and shared it with Paul Sullivan

Because there's very little precident of a team offering compensation for another one's GM.

And if the Cubs plan on offering Theo the President of Baseball Opps title, isn't it almost unprofessional to block a promotion for Theo by demanding compensation from the Cubs (assuming the Red Sox aren't also offering a similar title if he stays)?

Beat me to it. I'll have to earn my 15 munutes some other way. On an unrelated not, I'm 63.7% sure that I saw Prince Fielder at a local Chipotle, but it might have just been a fat black guy.

No, it's not unprofessional at all. Baseball is a club, it's not like Theo is going to work for IBM. The Sox could rightly say, "it's fair" because the Cubs are taking their chief of baseball operations and placing them at a disadvantage. It doesn't much matter that they have Cherington in the wings.

However, that's based on the premiss that the Sox are picking up Theo's option. I don't think they will be getting Castro or Garza, but I think they will get something, probably money. (Second However), they could try to negotiate a package deal where they Cubs take Lacky too and get back some decent prospects.

Boston fans are gonna be so mad when there's no/very little compensation.

Do you think Cub fans will be pissed if he doesn't come here? I think I decided a week ago that I don't give a damn because New GM/Savior should be a good hire anyway.

Pissed? I dunno. Disappointed, maybe. But it largely depends on who we get instead.

I really want to get Theo. Mainly because I could see him getting a little more flexibility with things than if we wind up with Hahn, Cherington, or Copolella. That said, I'm very confident we're making a good hire and heading in the right direction.

He just said it was a purple Fanta t-shirt. Guess the guy who came on here was legit.

Talked to two MLB execs who know Theo Epstein well. One predicts he stays and fixes #Red Sox mess. One predicts he goes to the #Cubs. Stayed tuned.

right. Unprofessional might not be the right word. They've already said the other day that they have a philosophy to let their front office interview for non-lateral positions, meaning if the Cubs are offering Theo a president position the Red Sox will let theo interview. I realize letting him interview and letting him leave are 2 different things, but I think if their guy interviewed, the position was offered, and that guy wanted to take the position, the Sox probably wouldn't strong arm him into staying. They would probably still fight for compensation and see what they can get out of him, and who knows maybe the Cubs would give them something of value. But more likely the Sox would end up having to accept some token offer for Theo because they aren't going to force him back into a position he doesn't want to be. Although I'm sure Theo would honor his deal and work his hardest for the Boston Red Sox, its still not a great position to put yourself in if you are the Red Sox.

I'll post what I remember (paraphrasing here)

Waddle - Why no photographic/video evidence in this day and age?

PSG - Didn't want to be "that guy." "Welcome to Chicago - here's my camera in your face."

Told the story pretty much exactly as Sullivan "reported" it. Speculated on how someone who has been mistaken for Theo Epstein "all the time" wouldn't know who he was (in other words - someone who says he gets mistaken for Theo Epstein and then not knowing who he is is probably lying). Says that he was 99.9% sure after meeting him and that once he Googled Theo's wife, he was 100% sure. He then emailed the story to Sullivan, Rogers, and Rosenbloom.

Went on to say that he has gotten a lot of jokes about Elvis sightings and such the last day or two. Also says he has heard the comment about Theo being out and about on Yom Kippur, like it would be impossible... "Well, guess what, I'm a Jew and I was at Starbucks on Yom Kippur, so it happens."

As an aside, I'm not sure why so much was being made of the holiday. Somehow I doubt it was THAT big of a deal. Hell, one of my best friend's family had Smoque ribs at their Yom Kippur festivities.

Edited because I have no idea why I used the word "recanted" there.

He also joked that maybe he'd get featured on a 30 for 30 after they joked with him not to make them "pull a Bartman on him" (whatever that even means)...

They took that joke to mean that he's probably just seeking attention.

Assuming that Epstein wants the Cubs' job, do the Red Sox really want a GM that doesn't want to be there and that they just screwed out of his new job because they couldn't settle on compensation? They've got nothing to lose for asking about compensation, but I would think you have to let him go if he wants to go.

3,000 years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax...

But really, I don't see how this drags on more than another day or two.

As frustrating as this is, the more time that goes by, the more and more likely it is Epstein comes here. Boston brass and Epstein himself have had ample time to announce an extension or a statement that Theo is going to finish out his contract. The fact that we have heard neither can only be viewed as positive at this point from our perspective.

I was thinking last week that the longer it dragged out, the worse the chances were the the Cubs get Epstein. Now, I'm thinking the opposite if for no other reason then the secrecy of the whole process.

I'm still doubtful, tho.

Some of it's not so proud, like Bernie Madoff, Son of Sam, and Jason Marquis.

At least we have a nice new crop like Kevin Youklis, Ian KInsler, and half of Ryan Braun.

I wouldn't read too much any lack of news. This process will take a number of days to complete at best. The Cubs have to sell the position to Theo and Theo has to sell himself(if he wants it).

I really don't think Theo has to do a lot of selling at this point. I do agree that it's tough to read too much into the length of time. It could mean any number of things, including Ricketts being used to drawn out negotiations, and the fact that we are still a long ways away from free agency, when you absolutely need your guy.
