http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7247477/bobby-valentine-meet-boston-red-sox-soon-according-source This tells me that Larry Lucchino has taken this thing over.
I think assistant to the GM and assistant GM are different things. I thought so too. I thought the Assistant GM would do more of the working side by side with the GM and the Assistant to the GM was the bitch boy to get Jed his coffee. Hearing what Shiraz is going to be doing though it sounds like Randy Bush is going to become the bitch boy. I'm curious what role he has and if soon he will just end up resigning. Maybe they should just send him to work in Mesa and be "Assistant GM in charge of special projects".
See Black, Bud and I don't think Dave Stewart ever was a manager but I guarantee there would have been respect for him in a clubhouse. Oh and I guess Tommy Lasorda was a pitcher. I think for the most part an active pitcher can't be a leader of a team, but the manager has the respect of the clubhouse largely from his actions not his past player position or performance.
Here's audio that leaked before Game 7 from the Texas Rangers clubhouse. Ron Washington is funny as hell and was more designed to keep the guys lose than an inspirational speech. Warning Very NSFW.
LOL I was thinking the same thing. Reminds me of Major League where the owner gives the GM the list of Spring Training Invites. "This guy is dead." "Well cross him off the list then!"
I never really knew much about Mackanin I just remember he was part of the trusted Advance Scouts that they would show for the Yankees scouting out the next playoff opponent. I remember that I always thought he had sweet hair and a nice leather jacket. He looked the part of a scout.
1.Boston 2.Chicago 3.St.Louis Not so sure about this, given the events of the last month. Boston still has a 160 Million dollar payroll, smart people in the front office and a crap ton of talent on the Roster. It's the second best job in baseball. Chicago has some work to do, but its a big market and a chance to get in on the ground floor and become a freaking hero. St. Louis just won a WS and can only go down from where they are at now. In addition they were a hot team that played above their talent level for a 3 weeks and won a championship. Couple that with the Shadow of a very popular LaRussa that you are replacing and the chance your best player is leaving makes that job less attractive IMO.
Good layout of how Mackanin did in his interview yesterday in Boston. Here's a good little quote that'll get you guys hot and bothered a bit. Heres the full article by my boy Peter Abe at the Globe. http://articles.boston.com/2011-11-01/sports/30346798_1_pete-mackanin-ben-cherington-red-sox-search
I posted a Top 10 in the other thread so i'll cut it down to a Top 5 now. Francona Martinez Lovullo Alomar Jr. Maddux I had Wedge on the list before but who knows if we would even be granted an interview.
Who? Sveum, Maddux, and Francona i'd assume. I heard on MLBN and again on ESPN Radio I believe it is Sveum, Tito, Alomar Jr. I think Alomar Jr. and Martinez might be interchangeable on the list though.
Arguing over whether or not Sandberg would be a good manager is a moot point. He's not going to be the Manager, he's already been told that by Theo, and the Cubs from what I heard have 3 candidates in mind already who have major league experience and are available.
McNutt, Carpenter and Junior Lake were named to the Futures Game roster. You can watch the game live on MLB Network this Saturday. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111101&content_id=25857742&vkey=afl_news&c_id=mlb

If nothing else it wouldn't hurt to match the high offer, if only to artificially drive the price up for him and to make the Cardinals have to pay more. I think we will do this for sure. The Red Sox were always really good at doing that to the Yankees and vice versa. I think Pujos is a freak of nature and the best hitter in the game right now. His subtle decline in value stats have me a little concerned but he still may be worth what it would take to get him. On the other hand, Prince is entering his prime. His weight is a concern for me. It's hard to play that heavy and never develop knee issues. Off the top of my head he hasn't had any issues in that respect but I think he's a bigger risk overall.
Funny line about the whole Starbucks thing. Said something like yea, sorry that was me buddy, but you didn't have to go call the paper about it. LOL Seems very excited to get to work! The franchise is in good hands.
I don't think anyone calls him Terry except maybe his soon to be ex wife. Pretty much everybody has called him Tito because of his resemblance to his dad since he was at UofA.
I think there is a 20% chance that Mike returns as manager but I think we'll find out next week for sure. If not here is my top 10 of who i'd like to see. I had Farrell on the list but the Blue Jays have said they will block him from going anywhere. 1. Tito Francona 2. Eric Wedge 3. Dave Martinez 4. Bob Brenly 5. Torey Lovullo 6. Willie Randolph 7. Sandy Alomar Jr. 8. Mike Maddux 9. Ryne Sandberg 10. Mike Sarbaugh
Was at the game up in Scottsdale today. One thing i'll say is i'm getting more and more impressed with Lake. He's really seeing the ball well right now. He's spitting on breaking balls and some good breaking balls and crushing fastballs. Hatley pitched a scoreless inning for the first time and his slider was much tighter.
