So many blogs/websites/boards devoted to the Cubs have fallen by the wayside or seem ready too. This is one of the few that has stuck around. I am glad; it's one of the few where I have learned something. I really didn't know much about stats until I started reading this board.

Sometimes the arguments get a little intense for me. But what can you expect? I predate Fred by a few, and I just don't see the point in spending the energy. Inevitably, the mellowness will come to you folks too.

I am sorry to hear about the tech problems. This is my third account I think; my first two got lost in tech meltdowns. I can sympathize. I used to be a board administrator for a computer users forum in another life. I won't ever do that again. I hope there's enough stability that membership can build.

I have noticed that the game threads aren't as long as they once were; i don't blame you because it has been hard to watch. Today against the Cards was disgusting.

I don't post much. I just enjoy the chatter.

Thanks Tim.

Just tell me who the sponsors are, and every day I'll make a post like "Yeah I just got back from Subway. Did you know it's only 400 calories? And it tastes great! You can have all the vegetables you want! SUBWAY."

that should take care of it

lol

You're welcome. And thanks for sticking through the troubles!

Finally - I appreciate the compliments I've gotten in this thread. I have certainly never been in this for the glory or notoriety. I have respect for Al and Julie and what they've been able to achieve. However, that's simply not my personality. I've had a lot of fun with NSBB over the years and consider quite a few people around here friends, though I've only met a few of you in person.

It's been the best message board I've ever participated in. And that's in spite of the fact that I'm really not of the same profile as the charter users around here, who devote far more time to the study of the game than I do (or ever will).

imb's post made a lot of sense to me. I joined around 2004, right after the swirling craziness that was the 2003 season, and the resulting explosion of interest that surrounded the 2004 season. So I'm the poster child for the new influx of people that came with increased interest of the team.

...and I'm probably the poster child for those who have stopped posting regularly now that the team has fallen on--what appears to be--extended hard times.

Certainly I was a regular in the game threads, which I pretty much never participate in anymore on any site. I can barely make it through a Cub game on my own these days, much less post anything about it.

It's worth mentioning that I've seen a number of new posters just starting up on the board in the past week or so, since the registration process was fixed.

New blood! Time to show them what NSBB is all about....

And by that I mean, welcome them with open arms of course!

Life happens. Less posters, less different discussions, less differing opinions, less worthwhile debates. There are some here who would rather puff their chests than discuss baseball.

Fewer.

Wait, what were you saying?

I lurk.

I'm also a Cardinals fan living in Chicago so I intentionally don't post much because it can seem trollish when the Cubs are kind of a mess as an organization.

I still like the site and the forum though.

At this point I think your posts would just be joining the chorus on how much the Cubs suck.

Not to mention how awesome Albert Pujols is and how we all love him so much. Is there really any difference between a Cubs and Cards board these days?

By August, there will be dozens of posts about how awful world-class cities are when you can live in an overgrown Peoria on a river.

Right, it's more laughing with us than at us.

This place is great. I came for the baseball several years ago when I could tolerate this team, and now I probably only post 10% baseball, but I stick around because the conversation about baseball and everything else is generally pretty solid. Thanks Tim.

I think one of the issues here is also one of its strengths. I came here in 2003 from the Cubs.com forums following the wisdom of cubsin2003, sanclemfan, and mlpeel. The insight and reasoned discussion are and always have been great here. The standards are high. There is so much quality, I don't have time to read it all. I rarely have time to post.

And there lies the rub. I can't make "just a quick post" here. I feel like I have to contribute if I open my gab. Unless I'm overly clear what I "don't mean" there are some world class conclusion jumpers here who will argue every minutia and try to make me feel less than. That's pretty hard as I'm fairly arrogant.

But I think we underestimate the amount of folks like me here. Intelligent Cubs fans who want more than what the clueless media has to offer, but don't have/take the time to post. Lurkers who live for the few moments of their day they can carve out between ringing phones, deadlines, and screaming kids, to sit down at their laptops in a coffee shop and watch the discussion, hilarity a drama on NSBB.

There's no reason to feel that way. People make all sorts of one liner posts. The ones that take heat are the ones like "only the Cubs".

Most definitely.

Ahem, look at me. I'm a board regular and when have I ever contributed anything worthwhile?

I always thought you had a stake in Rotoworld considering how much you linked to them.

There are two main options:

1) The housecleaning begins before the trade deadline. There was over 125 people online during the first Cubs pick of the draft. Plenty of people are interested in the future. A rebuilding process will get people buzzing again and wanting to claim they cared again "from the ground floor."

2) This starts a decadelong rebuilding effort that fizzles out every two or three years. It's hard for the Cubs to turn into Pittsburgh or Kansas City with the resources at their disposal.

Interest will pick back up. These things are cyclical. The fact that it is currently so apparent means that the downswing is near an end.

The only thing that really annoys me is the recurring pattern of rehashing the same 5-6 discussions over and over again with different player names and the same ignorant viewpoints. At some point, it just becomes tiring trying to put forth an objective rebuttal to a misguided viewpoint when you just know the response is going to be "Well I'm just going to go on believing this anyway and ignoring all the points you make, or I'm going to take one semantic issue with your three-paragraph argument and whine about that for 5 pages."

its this. this has happened to me too often here. This is why I feel I have to be painstakingly clear and put more time/effort than I want into posting. And so I lurk, appreciating the great content and humor that is available here and dismissing the petty arguments since I'm no longer in them.

Keep it up boys, you have a fan.

I agree with that. Certain people here thrive on weeding out that one part of an argument or point that doesn't agree with them and then just go to town on it. I can't count how many times I've seen a long, well thought out, bold (aka going against the popular opinion) argument presented and the response is a 4 word sarcastic response or a one sentense reply where one point of the article is exaggerated beyond belief as a way to mock the argument.

I can understand the frustration of having to discuss a topic that's been beaten to death 1000 times without sarcasm and humor, but some of the scenarios I can think of weren't overly discussed. I guess I just wish if people were going to be sarcastic, that they are sarcastic and then post their beliefs on the topic. Some people live for jumping on other people's arguments, and yet I notice they themselves almost never initiate a discussion topic themselves. They'd rather hide in the corner and popout to interject sarcasm from other people's opinions than put themselves out there for others to possibly disagree with. My guess is that this is partially why there are so many 5 word sarcastic mocking responses out there because its hard to ever be on the defensive end if you never give people something to disagree with.
