There is a difference between spending and spending wisely. That contract for Pujols is too risky, unless you can use him as a DH and utilize his production long-term. That's an AL contract.

Fielder would be a great pickup, but that bar was raised and I'm afraid he will be demanding something in that neighborhood. I'm a fan of the trade, but in this case I am interested to see WHAT kind of moving around the new management can pull off - and I am sure there will be plenty of moving and additions.

People need to chill out.

Rule 5 Draft activity: The Cubs selected recently converted right-hander Lendy Castillo from the Phillies' organization in the Major League phase, and picked infielder Ricky Alvarez from the Angels in the Triple-A phase. They also lost two infielders as the Orioles took Ryan Flaherty and the Red Sox picked Marwin Gonzalez. In 38 Minor League games, Castillo is 7-4 with a 2.43 ERA since he was converted from shortstop after the 2009 season. He has 111 strikeouts and has walked 42 in that stretch. He's projected to be a starter, but will be in the bullpen this season.

It's too bad there's not a Rule V thread.

Meant to put this in with rule V post. Sorry, guys.

DALLAS -- The Cubs may have left the Winter Meetings without filling the openings at first and third base or adding another starting pitcher, but general manager Jed Hoyer said Thursday he felt they got a lot accomplished.

"We feel really good about where we are after this week," Hoyer said. "It's been a really productive week. A lot of this week is pushing things forward.

"You always see a lot of things get done a day or two or even early next week after these Meetings, and we think that will be the case for us as well," he said. "We feel we've gotten things to a good place and, hopefully, some of those things come to fruition soon. Leaving here without a 'deal,' that's OK."

Shut up Jed, you promised us lots of stuff at the Winter Meetings. You've lost all your credibility, Jed "Hendry" Hoyer.

I wish we were the Marrrrrrrrrrlinnnnnnnnns!

In a way, so do I. I mean, two titles in 14 years sounds pretty good considering our history. But that is all I would want as far as being a Marlin.

How do you know you can't if you haven't given it a good try?

Brett posted this in one of his entries today...

For what it’s worth, a source confirms that the Cubs did, indeed, make an offer for Albert Pujols, but not at the $250 million level. Um, ya think? It sounds like the Cubs may have been the “mystery team” all along, but the Pujols camp let folks believe that the Cubs were offering more than they actually had.

1. That was a reference.

2. Everyone stop wishing I was dead.

I don't know about you guys, but I wish the Cubs kept Hendry. Hendry never left the winter meetings without a deal or two. I'm sorry, I gave this Theo/Hoyer experiment long enough. Letting Ramirez go, trying to trade Garza, bringing back Zambrano. We are a worse team today than when these bozo's took over. And cheapskate Tom Ricketts, under the likely advice of Crane Kenny, is cutting the payroll in half and keeping the rest for himself. And that's not enough for him as he's probably spending the offseason trying to find new ways to cram even more outrageously intrusive ads all around Wrigley Field.

I'm telling you, Hendry might have been more interested in being fat and eating donuts than making a good baseball team, but when he was done eating the donuts, he was a wheeler and dealer. It's not to late to pick Hendry up from the nearest cardiologist's office, strap him to a gurney, give him a phone and try to have him salvage whats left of the offseason.

Probably the only one I'll get right in the FA contest.
