If that is the total, I actually feel a little bad for Kerry. He should have at least received a 3 million contract in light of the Bobby Jenks signing with the Red Sox..

I don't. He probably shouldn't get anymore than $500,000 for pitching services, and $1m for being a fan favorite.

Interesting view of market forces and net worth you have there.

Well I take it all back, 1/1.5 is more than fine, it's actually quite good. All we need is one of Wood or Guzman to have some type of bounce back and the bullpen should be very solid.

All we need is for Wood to continue pitching like he was in the second half of last season. That's far from a given, but it's reason to have faith that he can still contribute. If he does and Guzman gives us anything, the Cubs will have a very solid pen.

The only thing I don't necessarily like out of what I've read is coming from Levine's blog. According to it, if the Cubs go get a SP now, Cashner can stay in the pen and learn from Kerry. I still have no idea(if this is even true) as to why the Cubs can't sign a pitcher AND Cashner be given a shot at the rotation as well.

This is a good signing, I think. Just a one year deal and probably cheaper than he should have gotten, considering the market.

It's a low risk signing for a guy who could be dominant, but that BB/9 has to get better. 5.67 last year, 4.58 in 2009 and 4.81 in 2007. It was just 2.44 in 2008, and predictably that's his last really good season – 3.26 ERA/2.32 FIP/3.07 xFIP.

The K/9 going from 11.40 in 2008 to 10.31 in 2009 to 9.59 last year is a bit startling, but isn't bad at $1.5 mil.

That's really discouraging. I wonder if they simply don't believe he'll have the stamina to be a starting pitcher? Similar to their feeling about Marshall?

It is a great deal in both years and dollars, still increasing Cashner's odds of ending up in the rotation is the best part of the deal compared to getting a stop-gap starter on the cheap.

The negotiations went like this:

Wood: "Jim, you know alot of teams are interested in me."

Hendry: "$10 million and that's my final offer."

Wood: "Sarah's from Chicago and really wants to move back."

Hendry: "OK..$15 million for two years."

Wood: "I'm going to get an oil change later."

Hendry: "Jeez Kerry, you are one tough negotiator..I'll put a no-trade clause in."

Wood: "I may let my beard grow back."

Hendry: "I'll let Mr. Ricketts know you want a piece of ownership."

Wood: "I'm going to put weight on again."

Hendry: "I'll make the announcement tomorrow."

I am amazed, as long as Kerry can pitch mildly effectively I would throw 1.5 mil 1 yr deals after him until he wants to retire.

My man crush on Kerry just got bigger!

I'm confused. He only signed for $1.5 million.
