Yankees Brian Cashman said his team is interested in bringing Kerry Wood back as a setup man, but they "won't compete with closer money."

Wood was fantastic down the stretch for the Yankees, posting a 1.23 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in 26 innings. That came after an unimpressive run in Cleveland, though, so it's unclear if anyone would be willing to offer him a ninth inning job. The Cubs are reportedly interested in bringing him back, but that would also be as a setup man. Dec. 6

I'd be in favor if he'd take a hometown discount... and he'd probably have to.

Levine had mentioned we may would give Wood up to about 5 mill. Not sure if this was expected to be for one year or if they would offer him up to 5 mill per year for multiple years.

As far as Cashner goes, he mentioned that if the Cubs couldn't land a starter, then they'd likely move him into the rotation. Guess I'm hoping we miss out on all the reclamation projects now.......

Ill always be a Woody fan, but cosidering the financial state of this organization, by no means would this be money well spent. If anything, it would probably be a PR move to appease the idiots who were upset that Sanberg left the organization. Edited by Little Slide Rooter

This would be a really bad waste of money and is definitely not worth it.

But my total homer fan self says to pay whatever it takes! I miss the guy!

Weren't his peripherals with the Yankees kind of atrocious? I think I remember someone saying that

Not atrocious, pretty decent actually, just nowhere near his numbers on the surface. Walk rate was awful.

I could see this being the "big move" this off season. It combines addressing a supposed need through free agency relating Cubs tradition lost through sandberg's departure and Ronnie's death.

I wouldn't object to bringing Wood back on a one year deal (maybe a mutual option for a second). The bullpen kind of sucked last season and an upgrade would be welcome, especially if it means someone like Cashner ends up starting next year.

if the cubs end up digging through the bargain bin for a 1b, i'm going to be pissed if they then blow multiple millions of dollars on a stupid set up man.

I'm all for bringing him back at the right deal as long as the means the Cubs are moving Cashner back to a starter.

I'm surprised more Cashner backers aren't seeing this angle.

Kerry Wood is the only guy in baseball that makes me think with my heart rather than my head.

I don't care if we overpay. I don't care if he's in his 30's and his arm is ready to fall off. I want him back. :(

Yes, I'm prepared to be flamed, and yes, I know I'm a horrible person.

Is Cashner even pitching somewhere this winter to get stretched out? So that come ST he'd be ready to be a starter and possibly start the year in the MLB rotation instead of having to go to AAA to get stretched out to be a starter and come up later in the year.

Stretching out won't be a problem. All pitchers in ST have to go through that process. The problem becomes how many innings he'll be able to throw in the rotation next year before he needs to be shut down.
