Beltre's a free agent.

Yes, I'm aware.

He was probably talking to me. I thought he was a FA. But I also interpreted what you said "Ramirez for Beltre swap" as a trade, so I assumed you were right since I haven't even thought about baseball since like May.

Yes, I'm aware.

So you'd be comfortable giving Beltre multiple years at $10 million + annually?

Obviously not 5/80 or anything like that, but in some instances, yes.

Asked what he'd do to improve the Cubs, Zambrano replied: "If I want to do something with this team, I think we need another good hitter to protect (Aramis Ramirez) and Marlon (Byrd). You know which one I'm talking about."

Adam Dunn?

"Yeah, I want that guy," he said. "He wants to play for us, not only this year, but two years ago he told me he wants to play at Wrigley Field badly, after he was traded to Arizona from Cincinnati. When you see a guy that wants to play for an organization and give everything he has to that organization, it says a lot. Let's see what happens. I want to see him next year here, but if we can't sign him, there are other guys on the free agency market we can sign to protect Ramirez and Marlon. We need that extra bat in the lineup next year."

Z for GM

I was just thinking it would be badass to have Z as our GM and just beat the [expletive] out of Kenny Williams during the winter meetings.

Doesnt really effect the Cubs in regards to Dunn, but mlbtraderumors has their Type A and B lists out and Dunn is listed as a Type B, barely missing out on Type A status. Since our pick is protected it doesnt mean much except for possibly more teams being interested in him as a B, and the Nats will probably offer him arbitration if its true. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

It means we would get to keep our 2nd round pick if we signed him. It's something.

Nobody is worried about going from Lee making things easy on Ramirez and Castro's sometimes wild arms to Dunn being perhaps disastrous?

Not that it would keep me from signing him...I want him. ....but it could get hilariously bad at times.

Yes and no. I do think our infield defense would be awful if we signed him. Castro might have 40 errors with Dunn at 1st. Ramirez had a period where he was actually decent at 3rd, but is now back to being bad...more likely because he's old. DeWitt is meh defensively.

But overall including his defense, Dunn is a net positive.

Not the worst contract in the world, but with the Ricketts saying payroll will be decreasing, I wouldn't expect to see any further upgrades this off-season.

I thought I had read that payroll would be staying about the same.

Same here. I know he definitely said it wouldn't be increasing much if at all, but I don't think he said anything about them making significant cutbacks in salary. With Lee and Lilly off the books there's plenty of room for Dunn's possible contract

Actually, what he mentioned was that while overall baseball payroll would likely remain about the same, there would likely be more money allotted towards scouting and player development. Meaning that the major league payroll could actually take a slight dip.

Of course, Piniella's 4 mill a year comes off the books as well and according to Levine, Quade is making 800,000-900,000 this upcoming season supposedly, so hopefully that's another 3 mill or so that can go towards something else.

I keep forgetting about Lou's salary. That's a good chunk of change off the books

Also Nady's $3.3 million is off the books assuming they let him walk. Between arbitration raises and increase in some players salaries vs. the salaries we let go due to FA or trades, how much of a gap is there between our cap this year vs. next year right now, anyone know? I know $33mil between Lilly, Lee, Lou, and Nady alone... and Aramis actually makes $2 million less next year, so that's $35 million. How much of that will be left after the arby and salary increases? Any speculation?

What we wound up paying out last season was right at 132.5 mill and after arb raises and minimum salary guys, our 2011 payroll looks to be around 119 as of now. I expect us to add a solid 1B(hopefully Dunn), a solid reliever, a project/injury scrap starting pitcher and maybe a 4th OFer type. To do that, I also suspect Fukudome will be dumped for as much salary relief as we can get.

Seems so pointless to go for a 4th OF when they already have Colvin. Also pointless to look for a reliever when they have so many arms in the farm that could be useful. It's not even like there are very "good" relievers out there that they should be spending money on.
