Dunn to the White Sox (p. 12)

I can see it now-

Hendry hires Sandberg. Sandberg then informs Hendry that Dunn isn't "his type of player". Cubs pass on Dunn.

And why is the GM allowing a coach to make personnel decisions?

it's not uncommon at all with experienced managers. not sure a first-year manager would get the same authority, but I wouldn't be shocked if Sandberg could talk Hendry out of some players.

My fear is that the Cubs may target Konerko for 1B as a 1 yr stop gap. :?

Obviously depending on contract, but what would be wrong with that? Especially a 1 year deal which still leaves us a chance to get Gonz/Fielder

Why would Konerko sign a one-year-deal after the year he's having?

Right. Kind of my point as well. Weird fear to have for us to sign Konerko for 1 year to play first.

And I agree that Konerko is having a very good year and could do just fine as a 1 yr. stop gap if the Cubs then plan to make a play for Gonz or Fielder the next off season. My fear is them doing that, which I think is a pipe dream, instead of signing Dunn this off season taking care of 1B for the next 3-4 yrs.

How would the Cubs be able to sign Konerko only for 1 year even if they wanted to? Are they going to offer him some insane salary for that one year?

You don't think a 1/$38 for Konerko is a good deal?

Isn't the more salient question how old either player will be at the end of the contract, not the beginning? Conventional wisdom seems to be Dunn will sign a four-year contract, making him 34 at the conclusion of his contract. Gonzalez will likely get a deal similar to Mark Teixeira -- meaning seven or eight years -- making him 35 or 36 at the end of his contract. Sure, you're likely to get one or two more "prime" (or a bit after) years, but the backside is likely to result in one or two more severe post-prime years. Considering Dunn will almost certainly command less per year, and the bird-in-the-hand principle, I think Dunn is the obvious solution if he can be signed reasonably.

If anything, it should be the White Sox fear that the season hes having would sucker them into giving him a 4 year extension.

As for Dunn, does anyone else agree that if we were to sign Dunn, and Ramirez stays, wed probably be 1 solid starting pitcher and a few respectable relievers(preferably not at Hendry-esqu contracts) away from contention?

Dewitt

Castro

Ramirez

Dunn

Soto

Soriano

Byrd

Colvin

Looks like a hell of a lineup to me.

Yeah I feel that way. With Hendry apparently intent on making moves to make us "competitive" next year instead of rebuilding entirely. I think Dunn will be a #1 priority, and I'm fine with that. Dunn would fit in nicely here. With players like Dunn, Ramirez, Soto, Byrd, and Soriano you've got a potential really nice middle of the order. And ofcourse the excitement of Castro continuing to grow. I'm not sure I'd go after Cliff Lee I'm more interested in bringing Dunn over and seeing what Hendry can come up with Pitching wise. I mean if you are just going to "wait out" contracts like Ramirez, Zambrano, ect. Might as well sign Dunn to a 4 year. Dunn at 4 years will not be an albatross contract so it won't hamper us much 4 years from now and would make us better now.

I agree. I've been posting for a while that this team is not that far removed from contending in the NL Central. A career-average year by DLee, ARam, Zambrano, and Grabow would have made them contenders this year.

It would look a lot better with Fukudome in there instead of Colvin.
