i typically don't care much about a 1b's defense, but isn't dunn's 1b defense so catastrophically bad that it would actually matter?

I think his defense has been better this year.

I'm not a big fan of the current metrics for 1B, but the non-UZR metrics have had Dunn being unterrible most of the time, and UZR actually has him about an average defender this year. But like I said, I don't think most current metrics do a very good job with fielding throws, which is a far greater part of the position than his range right or left.

The worst thing about this is being subjected to "Kap's Corner" and the ghoulish image that went along with it. Good Lord.

Has anyone picked up on this besides Kaplan? If not, that doesn't really give it much legs since, well, it's Kaplan.

Is it bad that I want this to be untrue just because this [expletive] [expletive] reported it?

Not at all.

Bruce said a few days ago that he would be very surprised if Lee came back. He said that some Cubs officials apparently prefer a left-handed hitter at first base.

If the Cubs sign Dunn, I'll be willing to overlook that the move was predicated upon an irrational fascination with "handedness".

It means no dumbass deal to Konerko either.

Ken Rosenthal has.

Source on DLee to #Braves. "Has legs." Names not agreed upon. Lee still must waive no-trade rights. #Cubs #Angels #MLB

As much of a mouthbreather as Kaplan is, he's pretty well connected. This wouldn't be the first deal, or even the third, that he's been the first to report.

Damn, really? That's depressing. Not that Lee might be traded, but that Kaplan has any legitimacy.

Bruce Levine reporting it as well.

The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves are working on a deal to send first baseman Derrek Lee to Atlanta for prospects, according to a league source.

According to a Cubs official, Lee refused to speak to the media before Wednesday's afternoon game against the Padres.

Braves top scout Jim Fregosi watched Lee hit four home runs during a series in St. Louis over the weekend. Fregosi reported back to general manager Frank Wren that Lee was swinging the bat as well as he has all season, according to a source.

Staying in the National League with a chance to go to the playoffs, rather than going to a team that was six games out of first place at the time of the trade request, may make more sense to the 35 year-old veteran.

Nice timing on those HRs, Derrek

Do they have another Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz they can trade?

Also, I had a dream at the beginning of the season that the Cubs traded for Nick Swisher to play 1B for them. Makes no sense from the Yankees point of view, but I'd like it.

He's also been completely wrong on many occasions

Is it his first exclusive?

The Cubs are close to trading first baseman Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves, I have learned exclusively

what an ass.

First Base FA's this offseason per Cots...I added the lefty notation since that was mentioned earlier in the thread...

* - player whose current contract includes 2011 option

+ - player bats lefty or switch

Adam Dunn WAS +

Lance Berkman NYY * +

Wes Helms FLA

Jason Giambi COL +

Paul Konerko CWS

Derrek Lee CHC

David Ortiz BOS * +

Lyle Overbay TOR +

Carlos Pena TB +

Albert Pujols STL *

If only Pujols batted left handed. Damnit.

I'm willing to be wrong, but I don't recall Kaplan ever being wrong on a deal being imminent. Again, it pains me to say because he's an idiot, but it's a little different than "the Cubs are talking to team X about player Y" sorta stuff. The Harden trade is a good example.

I ask this with the caveat that I'm not as familiar with our minor league development tracks as a lot of people here.

What are the chances of Soriano being considered for 1st next year especially if Brett Jackson proves he deserves to be on the big club?

I guess I don't understand the Soriano to 1st idea. He has had trouble on defense ever since he started in the majors because he has terrible hands. He can't consistently pick up a ball bouncing towards him and has minor troubles catching the ball at times as well. But he does have some huge positives to his game as well with good speed and a strong, accurate throwing arm.

I'm not sure why you would want to move him to a position that forces him to use his weakness constantly and gives him no chance to show off his range or arm. It's an awful fit. If he were to be moved to the infield, back to 2nd would be a much better fit even though we know he would be terrible defensively there.
