I ask this with the caveat that I'm not as familiar with our minor league development tracks as a lot of people here.

What are the chances of Soriano being considered for 1st next year especially if Brett Jackson proves he deserves to be on the big club?

I guess I don't understand the Soriano to 1st idea. He has had trouble on defense ever since he started in the majors because he has terrible hands. He can't consistently pick up a ball bouncing towards him and has minor troubles catching the ball at times as well. But he does have some huge positives to his game as well with good speed and a strong, accurate throwing arm.

I'm not sure why you would want to move him to a position that forces him to use his weakness constantly and gives him no chance to show off his range or arm. It's an awful fit. If he were to be moved to the infield, back to 2nd would be a much better fit even though we know he would be terrible defensively there.

Plus he'd hop every time he caught a throw and the runner would be safe more often than not.

Jerry Crasnick hops into the rumor mill.

10:40am: The Braves and Cubs are "way along in the process" of working out a deal, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (all Twitter links). Lee appears willing to accept the deal, but the clubs haven't determined which players would go to Chicago. Not surprisingly, the Cubs don't seem likely to get big-time prospects in the potential deal.

The biggest positive to moving him to first would be that it might save his legs a bit if he didn't have to roam around the outfield and, thus, he'd be healthier and more productive longer. It also opens a spot in one of the deeper parts of the minors (OF) while filling long term a significant weakness (1B).

That's a good point on the defensive issues, however.

Yep it's all predicated on filling the 1B void and relieving the overstock of OFs, not on Soriano's skillset specifically.

Watching him butcher throws in the dirt would certainly get old fast, though.

Jesus. Soriano has a hard enough time with balls that have to travel 200 feet to get to him. Can you imagine him having to field balls that only travel 95 feet? While 1B may be the easiest position to play in baseball, Soriano is going to be a disaster anywhere he plays. Ironically, his best defensive tool is his arm and quick release, and he can't use either at 1B.

Unlike Karen Sypher, balls flying at him is not a strength.

Sources confirm to me that D-Lee will accept trade. Prospects are being worked out as we speak. Plz credit @thekapman.

My lord, did Kaplan not get enough credit for doing chores around the house when he was 5 or something? He is an attention and glory hog the likes of which haven't been seen in the media.

I believe the phrase you are looking for is "attention whore".

I won't miss Lee. Am I crazy for getting my hope up for Dunn.

How could you not miss Lee? He was awesome as a Cub. I'll miss him greatly.

I don't think you're crazy on that one. Hendry likes him. There's a major hole at 1st base. The offense is considered the major reason why this season went down. Hendry will want to make a splash. Dunn is the best free agent at 1st base and is left-handed. And Dunn might still want to come to Chicago.

I wouldn't call getting Dunn likely. But if I had to bet on who will be the Cubs first baseman next season, Dunn would easily be my first choice over the myriad of other options they have for the position. Dunn seems to fit what the Cubs are looking for and they have the money to go get him if they decide to go that way.

Yes, but I'm dreaming with you

I think Hendry will definitely look hard at Dunn. I believe there's been talk about Hendry being interested in him in the past.

The thing that I wonder about Dunn is how a player of his skill set would get along under a manager like Ryno. I just imagine Sandberg hating Dunn.

Dunn definitely scares me as far as defense goes. Mostly in the "catching throws from Castro and Ramirez" department. But I'd deal with it for the reward of his bat. The Cubs are a pretty good team w/ Dunn instead of 2009 Lee, if Aramis plays anything near a full season to his capability.

Twitter is awesome.

eligieryna @thekapman Any thoughts about the Derrek Lee trade, as first reported by Jerry Crasnick and Ken Rosenthal?

Personal preference. I have much sympathy for him though.

Offer is good without any limitation. If it happens anytime in the life of this board it'll happen.

what is that? i think you need more quotes, not everyone remember individual posts from four years ago

Going to miss Derrek's perfect ass.

That was by far one of the weirdest baseball articles I can remember reading.

My worry with this deal is that the Cubs will attempt to replace Lee next season in-house. They might be able to get replacement-level production from some combination of Russ Canzler, Micah Hoffpauir, and Bryan LaHair, but quite honestly, with how mediocre the offense is, the Cubs are going to need a heck of a lot more than that from 1B to compete in 2011.
