Dunn definitely scares me as far as defense goes. Mostly in the "catching throws from Castro and Ramirez" department. But I'd deal with it for the reward of his bat. The Cubs are a pretty good team w/ Dunn instead of 2009 Lee, if Aramis plays anything near a full season to his capability.

Dunn IS 2009 Lee with worse defense. He's way better than 2010 Lee though.

Cubs will suck next year regardless, but I'd enjoy watching everything about Dunn (many long HRs, working counts, and the occasional comedy at 1st base. Oh ya, and the thought of him partying with Soriano and Castro on the road--picturing that in my mind just made me laugh for some reason)

Good lord, what year is it? I've been looking at 2009 fantasy football numbers for the last week, so I guess that was it?

Yonder Alonso?

He's not a Braves prospect, he's with the Reds. We could work out a separate deal for him, though.

It'd be really difficult working out that trade, though. He's been doing pretty well for himself in the minors and will probably end up in LF next season.

I get the feeling the Cubs might have to go dumpster-diving for a 1B.

Sorry, yeah, that's what I meant. He's obviously blocked and signed to a major league deal so they'll have to do something with him.

I won't miss Lee. Am I crazy for getting my hope up for Dunn.

Yes, but I'm dreaming with you

I think Hendry will definitely look hard at Dunn. I believe there's been talk about Hendry being interested in him in the past.

The thing that I wonder about Dunn is how a player of his skill set would get along under a manager like Ryno. I just imagine Sandberg hating Dunn.

Dunn had better practice his sacrifice bunting.

I get the feeling the Alonso in left experiment was a bust; obviously the Cubs won't be where they'd look to move him but stranger things have happened.

circa April 2006:

DOUCHEBAG MCGEE
Offer is good without any limitation. If it happens anytime in the life of this board it'll happen.

what is that? i think you need more quotes, not everyone remember individual posts from four years ago

the original post doesn't seem to exist anymore but in 2005ish, ManCrushonNomar promised that if the Cubs every acquired Adam Dunn, that he'd change his user name to "DouchebagMcGee".

Also, I'm kind of interested in the timing of this move.

The Braves had a deal in place with one of their draft picks that would have cost them somewhere around $1m. However, reports were the Braves nixed the deal on Monday in order to pursue Aramis Ramirez. For whatever reason, no follow-up on that deal ever came about (i.e. whether the Braves backed off, had a trade in place for Ramirez that didn't happen, etc.).

I wonder if the source got his information mixed up in terms of which Cub the Braves were pursuing? If the Braves were interested in getting Lee following this weekend's series with the Cardinals, the time line would match up.

How could you not miss Lee? He was awesome as a Cub. I'll miss him greatly.

We've already been missing him for months.

12:10pm: The teams will finalize a deal this afternoon, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter). Glaus will move to the bench.

He didn't mention Kaplan! [-X

What can the Cubs reasonably get for a few months of Lee? Hopefully enough to make up for the picks.

Probably Julio Teheran, Freddie Freeman, and Craig Kimbrel. I think that's a fair trade

Picks? The Cubs weren't getting any picks for Lee.

I assume the Braves have a pretty stacked system, like they have for the past 20 years or so?

I'd like to get some bats this time, though, as we seem to have more than enough pitching in the system.

According to MLBTR, Lee probably would have ended up as a Type B free agent, which would have netted the Cubs a pick in the supplemental first round had they offered him arbitration.

I'm expecting something along the lines of the Lilly/Theriot trade sans DeWitt.

Would they have offered arby? If they really didn't want him back and he really wanted to stay...

That wouldn't be horrible. We got some prospects in that trade that might be useful/pretty decent some day.

I don't see why not. He's going to be given some type of comp. status. The Cubs aren't going to contend next season. If they offer Lee arbitration and he accepts they just get a stopgap 1B for a year.

Probably not. The Cubs tend to re-sign or trade guys before they hit arbitration, as this deal illustrates. They haven't gotten much in the way of compensation picks in recent years (save for Kendall and Pierre) more because of a lack of arbitration-eligible players than anything else. Wood and Harden are the only two names that come to mind when it comes to the Cubs not offering arby.
