So who takes Lee's place on the Cubs? Hoffpauir can't be recalled yet, right? Maybe an outfielder like Fuld with Nady becoming the temporary full-time first baseman?

I know it really doesn't matter, but I'm taking a trip to Iowa this weekend so I'm curious who I will or won't see there.

It's Hoffpauir...

Cubs recalled 1B Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A Iowa.

With Derrek Lee on his way to Atlanta, the Cubs have a big hole at first base and are likely to fill it in a variety of different ways. Hoffpaiur, 30, will see some time there but isn't a great fantasy bet. He has failed to register a hit in seven at-bats with the Cubs this season.

Who cares who we got? At least we don't have to worry about Hendry shelling out eight or nine million for Lee in the offseason.

I care because if the organization has money to piss away on trades like this with no particularly prominent prospect then they should have had the same money to spend on the draft but they didn't.

they're cutting salary because there's no point in keeping it.

any chance Soriano/Colvin see time at first?

I don't want to see Soriano anywhere near the infield.

why?

He was terrible at 2B and will be terrible at 1B. His defense in LF is certainly not good, but he has been better this year than he was in the past. With Soriano at 1B, Ramirez and Castro may combine for 50+ errors.

so you're saying playing 2b is similar to playing 1b?

The correct answer, which was already brought up (in this thread, I think) was that the shift to first would neutralize his two best defensive assets; his arm and his range. But I really don't know how you could definitively say that he'd be piss poor. I think he merits at least a look.

As was covered in another thread, Sori's biggest strengths are his speed and his arm. His biggest weakness has been fielding line drives and balls into the corner. As a first baseman he doesn't use his speed or his arm and he exclusively deals in short hops and difficult picks. It's pretty much the worst position for a player with Sori's strengths/weaknesses.

I'm happy with the return. Lee is getting older and has had a bad season. Not to mention, there aren't that many teams out there in contention that are in need for a 1B to begin with. To get a 19 year old with some solid upside, a reliever who looks like he could possibly contribute in the majors by 2012 at the latest, a lefty who has good stats albeit old for his level, AND save at least SOME money in the process for 5 weeks of D-Lee? I'm thinking Hendry did a solid job on this one.

Looks so odd.

He'll be wearing #27 in Atlanta, for all [one or two] of you who care.

Soriano was absolutely terrible as an infielder. He has been above-average as an outfielder. Why would you move him to an infield position that he has never played when he is already a decent defender in the outfield?

Hendry on sell-off: "Most people should be excited in the way we're moving forward."

While I like the trade, this comment makes me want to remind everyone of something Hendry said(and Bruce reminded everyone in his blog today) back in 2007.......

"We're going to get good and then we're going to stay good." Jim Hendry during 2007

again, so you're saying playing 2nd base is similar to playing 1st?

but regardless of if he's as good an outfielder as he is at first base, playing colvin in left allows a much greater value. or colvin can play first, i don't care.

I'd like to see Colvin get in a little playing time at 1B. He played the position in college and it might add to his value for next year or as trade bait.

It's kind of frustrating that they gave him away for nothing real good and payed for him. Hendry's GM nickname is probably "Niceguy Jim".

Gee, I thought the Cubs got quite a good return for six weeks of Derrek Lee.

Robinson Lopez, 19 year old dominican pitcher with a decent frame who dominated rookie ball as a 18 year old, made the jump all the to low A this year and started off strong but struggled as the year went on but who has still held opponents to under a hit per inning. If he repeats Low A next season, he'll still be a year young for the league. And two relievers a 23 year old, 6'4" lefty, Tyrelle Harris, who has basically dominated at every level on his way to AA where he is just under a strikeout per inning and as a WHIP under 1. And a 22 year old lefty, Jeff Lorick, who I'm less excited about, but who has allowed less than a hit per inning, as respectable WHIP of 1.22 on the year.

By my estimation, it isn't likely that either Lopez or Harris will be good major leaguers, but it is possible. And that's not a bad return for 6 weeks of a struggling firstbaseman.

a 1B has to Catch the ball. Soriano can't catch the ball. Problem

Instead of dumping Lee’s salary and getting little in return, the Cubs were aggressive, and threw cash into the deal to help coax some legitimate value out of this deal. Jim Hendry deserves major credit for this trade, as instead of spending his money on an aging first baseman on a fifth place team, he now has three more solid pitching prospects to load into his system. This is just an excellent overall pickup for Chicago.
