For roster management purposes, does this mean Jeff Baker is back next year? Or do we think we may try to save a mill or so, to go with Russ Canzler as a backup 1B, with Barney playing the backup roles of 2B, SS, and 3B.......Or maybe we nontender Baker and sign some cheap vet to back us up on the corners.

Personally, I'd take option 3, since Ramirez will most likely miss some time anyway. But, I'd hold out til near the end of spring and sign someone who's willing to play for 1.5 or so, basically the same figure Baker would get through arb.

Yes, because if I'm known for anything here it's for living by the stupid "everything bad of course will happen to the Cubs" mantra.

I'd say it depends on what we do at 1B. We may need a 1B/3B guy.

Canzler's defense at third base is bad.

I've been wondering about that. IIRC, he was a 3B in high school. I've been excited to see him getting more ABs at 3B, since he would be more valuable there than at 1B or LF. I hope he develops better defense at 3B with time. Either way IMO, he needs at least another year before he can be relied upon to hold a roster spot.

I think he meant the criticizing people part.

If you want a reserve infielder from the system, Marquez Smith is essentially a poor man's Jeff Baker. That said he'd be a definite downgrade, although probably not as much as Canzler. Baker makes just under a million dollars this year and is having maybe the worst season of his career. I can't imagine the difference between him and a Smith or a Canzler being enough to make that move on a purely financial basis.

That's actually the only reason I came here to read this thread.

You guys let me down.

This, from the guy who roots for baseballs worst team, 18 losing years running.

He's having a great year against left handers...he is 2 for the season against right handed pitchers.

This makes me sad.

Seeing Pie in the background makes me more sad.

I wish him all the best, but why does adding Fontenot make sense for the Giants?

It doesn't. That's why it happened. I liked Fontenot as a reserve, but I'm not too upset that he's gone. It's fun to see the Cajun Connection now playing for rivals.

Looks like a guy with slightly above average speed and a terrible K:BB ratio with no power. If you're gonna strike out as much as he has it better come with some power to balance it out... he has none it seems.

But I don't know any scouting reports on him and I'm just basing this off his B-R stats

An that ratio is at single A. Comer on Jim at least get two prospects

Crawford is now the last remaining piece to the Sammy Sosa trade.

Yet still have a championship drought that is 71 years less than ours.

Unless you're about 80 that really doesn't matter.

I haven't suffered for 102 years, but I have to hear about the futile team that I picked to support above all others almost every day. So it matters some, just not a lot.

You don't have to be 80. Pitt last won in 1979, you can be in your 30's and have enjoyed that, while generations of Cubs fans have come and gone without one. It's pretty crazy to suggest only 80 year olds know the difference.

I'm talking about from the perspective of most of the people on this board in terms of the ages they generally fall under. I'd say with relatively few exceptions most of us fall in the 20-40 range. So let's say that in 1969 the Cubs had actually won the WS. Everything leading up to that is exactly the same as in "real life" everything since then has played out exactly the same as we've known it in "real life." Is anything really "better" in terms of being a Cubs fan born after that compared to not having won a WS in 102 years? Does anyone think that crap like Bartman still wouldn't be obsessed over if the "futility" had been for 34 years instead of 95? About the only difference I could really see is you wouldn't hear anything about the goat because, really, when you get down to it is a 40-year WS drought really any better than 102 years considering most of the fans here wouldn't have been alive? Hell, even if it had been in 1979 like the Pirates, if you were too young to know anything about it or were born after, is it really that much worse? I don't think what I'm suggesting is crazy at all. Personally, it wouldn't make a difference to me if they had won one when I was several months old if I went through the same lifetime of Cubs losing.
