Ladd qualified today. I guess that leaves Hendry. I'd be awfully surprised if they don't qualify him as well. You don't want to be down two defensemen. He was shaky at times, but given that it was his first time in the fire this year, I think he did pretty well.

I will seriously hug Bowman if he is able to bring this team back under the cap sans Buff, Sopel, Eager and Frasier. That's phenomenal.

i think that's impossible

I'm just basing off his comments yesterday.

He just said no more trades would need to be made, he did not say that all of their RFAs would return did he?

yeah, it doesn't really matter what he said. the numbers are pretty telling. obviously we don't exactly what it looks like because of these weird rules that we're suddenly learning about, but we're definitely going to lose at least one more guy.

really if all we end up losing now is versteeg or ladd, i'd be absolutely amazed/thrilled.

I just don't know why he'd go out of his way to tell people that they didn't need to make any more trades and they are 'fine' regarding cap space.

And yes, I know he didnt say anything about the RFAs, my post was asking if we had a chance to resign Ladd since we qualified him, and from there said if we could somehow bring most of this team back I would hug Bowman. I don't think it's likely we do, but the truth is no one knows what crazy cap stuff he's pulling behind the scenes (like the injury cap relief stuff no one realized they could do)

where's truffle? looks like the flyers are getting nabakov

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/37952034/ns/sports-player_news/

considering what they had last year, that's about as massive an upgrade as you can get in goal.

we're going to try to sign him... we traded for hamhuis and then dealt him away to pitt because he wasn't going to sign with us ($$$ being the issue, i'm sure). hopefully we can get something done with nabakov.

I'm sure he's an upgrade because it would be hard not to upgrade from what the Flyers had. However, he didn't seem all *that* special to me.

he's not great but he's at least average. you can win a cup with an average goalie. you can't win one with michael leighton and brian boucher.

If you can win 2 games in the finals with those guys you can win a stanley cup with those guys.

imo, leighton did a better job against us than nabby did.

I thought Leighton was pretty bad at times. I don't know. I wasn't afraid of Nabokov in any way at all. He might be a good goaltender, but even with my limited knowledge of the game I'd raise an eyebrow if someone called him great.

Nabokov got a lot of wins in SJ because he plays almost every game, which I still think is crazy and perhaps has something to do with his playoff performances. And he is definitely an above-average goalie in this league.

But look around -- who is really the elite? Ryan Miller and...Ryan Miller?

Below him I would put Nabokov in that next group with Luongo.

I'd say that represents a drop off of expectations for Luongo, although given his collapses against the Hawks, I can't argue that he was no better than Nabokov last year.

none of those upper-tier goalies scare me, we've destroyed them all. it's the next tier, the jonas hiller's, the pekka rinne's of the world that give me nightmares.

okay, well maybe ryan miller freaks me out, but his team doesn't.

Negotiations between Evgeni Nabokov and the Philadelphia Flyers don't appear to be going well.

Don Meehan, Nabokov's agent, said that as of Monday, there's been no progress towards a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. With the Nabokov situation looking murky, there's been conflicting reports about the Flyers' attempting to approach the Stars' about Marty Turco. Both Turco and Nabokov are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st.

Don't etch Nabokov's name into a Flyers' jersey, yet.

Vokoun

Bryzgalov

and maybe Hiller

are guys i probably like better than Nabokov and Luongo

No surprise here, Kostitsyn being moved and all. Actually glad to see that turd is coming to our division. But he can bring some production if his head is screwed on straight. And given that the Preds sort of needed to move Ellis, not a bad deal for them. And Montreal has hedged a little against the possibility that they made a monumental mistake in trading Halak and trusting Carey Price with the future of the franchise.

Goalie rankings by GVT

This only covers the above average goalies (0+ GVT) that played at least a majority of the team's games, which is why you don't see Huet or Niemi on the list.

1. Tuukka Rask

2. Ryan Miller

3. Jaroslav Halak

---------------------------

Tier "two": Evgeni Nabokov, Jimmy Howard, Tomas Vokoun, Ilya Bryzgalov, Henrik Lundqvist

---------------------------

Tier "three": Jonas Hiller, Mikka Kiprusoff, Johan Hedberg, Craig Anderson, Martin Brodeur, Tim Thomas, Chris Mason

---------------------------

Tier "four": Marty Turco, Cam Ward, Roberto Luongo, Pekka Rinne

...and after that it really tails off towards mediocrity and below.

Other than those top 3, it's not really worth spending a bunch of money on a goalie to make a lot of difference.

EDIT: My reasoning for this is that the numbers really level off after Lundqvist, and every goalie from Howard on down to Nittymaki (just after Rinne) is within a single standard deviation of the mean. Nabokov and Howard are nearly identical, so the only true outliers in a positive direction are the top 3.

i don't know how they can put kiprusoff in tier 2 and luongo in tier 3. kiprusoff has sucked pretty hard in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

I think it's actually a scale ranking the goalies by how much the Blackhawks own them. The higher the tier the more we own them.
