I think Bowman's just posturing. He said no more cap moves were needed a few days ago then traded Versteeg.

(Granted, the more I read about Stalberg, the more excited I am for him).

Yeah, some neutral observations I've seen suggest that he could be the steal here.

I think it may have been true that none were needed. But that doesn't mean no more could be made. Why not free up more room if you can also get back some quality. The Buff trade was all about cap space and draft picks. This is about acquiring specific players who are cheaper versions of what they had.

Right. One comment I saw projected Stalberg as a 3rd line forward. Wasn't that what Versteeg was for most of the year? The same article, and I forget where it was, suggested that he might wing a line with Persson, that other Swede Bowman just signed. The author commented, and I hadn't thought about it until now, how much Bowman loves the Swedes.

On another note, the Blackhawks prospect depth is amazing at this point. They don't have any guys who are going to step in and be stars, but they are going to just keep churning out Versteeg-quality forwards and defensemen for the next decade.

On the flip side of the Hawks, teams with plenty of cash to blow:

The Blues really need to make a splash, though I doubt they will. Fans here are holding out hope for Kovalchuk. The fans are starting to get a little antsy with the rebuilding program, especially since now they've seen the Hawks rise from the ashes and get it done.

The NHL isn't the NFL though, a team with cap space isn't necessarily going to spend it.

He's LA bound, from what I've heard.

Oh I know, which is what has a lot of folks gnashing their teeth.

I've partied with some Swedes and I now share Bowman's love for them.

Does that 55.2 figure include all the injury exemptions that the Hawks were supposedly going to capatalize on that was going to save us?

I don't think the Hawks had to trade Versteeg. I think Kris made that decision for them when he had that awful rap during the parade.

That was never confirmed. It doesn't seem to work with a layman's read of the CBA, but you never know how these things will actually work out.

first big move of the day: Gonchar to Ottawa. 3 years/5.5m cap hit with a NTC.

also: Biron to NYR, Coburn re-signs in PHI, Meszaros to PHI for 2nd rounder, Alex Tanguay to CGY.

my first instinct to the Meszaros trade is yuck, but we've turned guys like him around before, so maybe it's a good move.

signing leighton to a two-year deal, on the other hand, is just bad.

Posted
yeah i really don't like the leighton deal. biron is a better goaltender and he's making less. i don't think they have the wrong idea in not going after a big goalie given the market, but i don't think michael leighton is the right guy to commit to.

better Leighton than Turco at 2-3x the price, that's for sure

definitely. there has been a lot of talk about a strong market for goalies, but i like literally none of the goalies on the market. i think ellis is the best goalie available and he's mediocre.

still not sure that leighton is the right choice though.

I'm sure they could've talked Bowman into giving up Huet. :)

i'm positive that it does not. if the cap is 59.2 or 59.4, and the bonus hits are 4 mil or thereabouts, that would put it at 55.2 without taking into consideration any exemptions.

bowman's got to know something we do not.

12:45 p.m. An important thing to remember as teams like Chicago, Philadelphia and others approach the salary cap: Teams are allowed to exceed the cap by up to 10 per cent in the off-season. So that means that on a $59.4-million cap, you can spend up to $65.3-million until after training camp. I expect a few teams to use that overage today.

Oh! Well that means you can just write off Huet's salary since he can be pushed to the minors.

Martin St. Louis apparently signed a 4 year extension with TBL.

Haven't heard final confirmation on Martin yet...just that both parties were interested in each other. I assume that's what you were talking about. Pierre LeBrun reports that Ellis is close to signing with a team that IS NOT Montreal. Not sure what team.

eta: LeBrun also says that LA is in the mix with PIT on Martin. So definitely not a done deal to PIT yet.

That's interesting about MSL. It sounded like he really wanted out this spring, but I guess Stevie was able to change his mind.
