it's sounding like that stuff about only the 1.3 going against the cap is BS. sounds like it's still the 4.2 mil

which means ladd and probably sharp or bolland.

maybe start thinking about a 95-100 point season next year?

where are you hearing this?

NHL salary cap is $59.4M but CHI's real cap # is $55.2M because of performance bonus overages. Looks like that $4M estimate was bang on.

A source tells me tonight that Chicago's bonus overage in 2009-10 was $4.19-million. So the Blackhawks cap will be that much lower.

And apprently those 2 guys are pretty reputable. considering the only ones reporting otherwise are some dudes on a message board, i think these are most likely correct.

Versteeg is a good player, but he is more flash than substance most of the time. I said it last week and it's still true -- if this is it, Bowman is a wizard.

And I guess this is only an assumption since he's from Ontario, but I'll bet Versteeg is pretty happy too. Win a Cup, then get to go home.

Also Buff, Sopel, Versteeg and Madden are significant loses. Most of these knowledgeable Hawks fans seem to think they are not

Keep telling yourself that.

You've listed a No. 6 defender, two 40-point wingers from an organization absolutely loaded at wing, and a fourth-line center. Oh noes, we're doooooooomed!

Ladd yes, Bolland absolutely not, Sharp 99% not. And 100 points is not hard in the NHL.

This isn't baseball, where everybody in the lineup takes a turn. The NHL is a top-heavy league. The Blackhawks will be icing the same top-4 defensemen and five of their best six forwards from last year.

Look at it this way:

09-10 Kris Versteeg: 0.42 even-strength points per game, playing with the Blackhawks

09-10 Viktor Salberg:0.30 even-strength points per game, playing with the Maple Leafs

Put Stalberg on Versteeg's lines and give him power-play time, and I don't think the production is all that different. Not enough to make up for the $2 million or so difference in salaries.

I dont argue that Bowman got great value in return for having to trade these players, but would he have traded them or not resigned Madden if the Hawks were better managed under the cap? Also, I have not ever come in here to just rag on the Hawks, so I dont need to be treated like some Wings fan troll. I just make observations about them like I would any other team. If you read through all the hockey threads the last couple of years you will find that I say many positive things about the Hawks, probably way more positive then negative.

I didn't accuse you of anything. I just mocked the idea that these are "significant" losses for the Blackhawks.

Would we prefer to keep them in a capless world? Sure. But I'm not particularly worried about them.

kyle, how much do you think ladd, hjalmarsson, and niemi will get?

My guesses:

$1.8 on a short-term deal, $3.0 on a long-term deal, and $2.2 on a short-term deal.

If you're right, they still have to clear some salary according to Capgeek...

They're fine if you can get rid of Huet's salary one way or another....

If the reported $55.2 cap is correct, forget about Ladd, most likely.

Then let's hope that number is wrong.

Bowman said last night, pretty clearly, that the Hawks were going to keep Ladd.

Just as big as announcing the trade was Bowman’s casual insistence that he’ll have no trouble signing his big three restricted free agents. Antti Niemi, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Andrew Ladd hit the market Thursday and could potentially be plucked away by another team.

“Offer-sheet talk is of no concern to me,” Bowman said.

He was right about one thing. There haven’t been many restricted free agents that have switched teams over the years. But does that mean the Hawks will match anyone’s offer, or does Bowman just not believe anyone will get an offer?

“[Offer sheets] don’t concern me,” Bowman repeated. “These guys are going to remain with the Blackhawks. We have plenty of flexibility to make things work.”

It's one thing for him to say "everything is fine" when he is trying to get his asking price for guys. But I think it's another thing to publicly say you're going to keep a guy and then let him go. Sure, he would have an out if another team gives Ladd a crazy offer sheet, but still. He knows he can't jerk guys around like that.

I thought he was very careless in the playoffs. He doesn't offer enough offensive explosion to play like that, and I have no problem with him being dealt, especially at that cap number.

I think Bowman's just posturing. He said no more cap moves were needed a few days ago then traded Versteeg.

(Granted, the more I read about Stalberg, the more excited I am for him).

Yeah, some neutral observations I've seen suggest that he could be the steal here.

He was at times. I remember how pissed off I was at him at the end of that Vancouver game when he held the puck for what seemed like an hour. Of course, I forgave him a few seconds later, but still.

The flipside of that is that he is still young and I think the bad habits can be coached out of him. I'm sorry to see him go -- much more so than I was with Buff -- but he won't be the difference between them being a top-5 contender or not.

I think it may have been true that none were needed. But that doesn't mean no more could be made. Why not free up more room if you can also get back some quality. The Buff trade was all about cap space and draft picks. This is about acquiring specific players who are cheaper versions of what they had.

Love the Versteeg deal but I'm going to start getting worried if we have to give up Ladd and others.

We knew Madden was gone all the way back in December. No matter how you spin it, replacing three productive forwards is going to be difficult. If we lose Ladd, that's one of our best two-way players that we lose. That could be the one that hurts the most.
