i knew bowman was posturing, but he still looks like a moron.

"these guys will be chicago blackhawks next season"

and then trades him the next day.

i expect sharp or bolland to be next.

none of the players traded have been as valuable as sharp or bolland. i'm still waiting to hear what the injury exemptions or whatever are.

i don't think bolland or sharp will be traded, we will just have a lot of swedes and other scandinavian-types on the team. i don't think that's a bad thing, necessarily.

Right now, I'd say we still look to be a match for the contenders in the conference. We're no longer clearly superior to teams like Vancouver, but we're still even with them. And that's a one-year reload and then back to dominance next year, imo.

I agree with the latter part of your post about reloading, but I don't know if I can predict next year. Obviously we're a playoff team with our top lines, and we've kept the D mostly in tact, assuming we keep Hammer. But considering how close the margin of error was in the Vancouver and SJ series....we won out with our depth. We could have lost both of those series last year...now all that depth is gone. I don't think I can predict how well we'll go until midway through the year.

The margin of error is always narrow in hockey, though. I don't think it's as simple as "it was close and we lost a player so now we'll lose." We were a good team that caught some breaks and a hot streak, and we'll need to do that again.

You're being too modest. Last year's Hawks were fantastic, not some lucky break cinderella.

Never said they were a cinderella. According to that one blog behind the net or whatever its called the Hawks were by far the best team in the league last year and actually underperformed in the playoffs. The Hawks could easily be as good as Vancouver and SJ or whatever next season, or they could be clearly worse, or they might still be slightly better. When your talking about losing depth, and not necessarily top end talent, its hard to tell until you see it's effects.

I'm very positive about the offseason right now. If we lose Sharp, Bolland or Hjalmarsson, I'll be very disappointed. Niemi can go, though, if he's signed to a big offer sheet or gets a big arbitration award.

here's what i got at capgeek right now:

Jonathan Toews — $6,300,000

Patrick Kane — $6,300,000

Marian Hossa — $5,275,000

Patrick Sharp — $3,900,000

Dave Bolland — $3,375,000

Tomas Kopecky — $1,200,000

Marty Reasoner — $1,150,000

Troy Brouwer — $1,025,000

Viktor Stalberg ($65,000) $850,000

Mathis Olimb — $600,000

* Bryan Bickell — $500,000

Brian Campbell — $7,142,875

Duncan Keith — $5,538,462

Brent Seabrook — $3,500,000

* Niklas Hjalmarsson — $3,000,000

Ivan Vishnevskiy — $821,667

Shawn Lalonde ($220,000) $773,333

* Jordan Hendry — $625,000

* Antti Niemi — $2,000,000

Corey Crawford — $800,000

i'm interested to see what the injury exemptions amount to. thinking about it, hossa and bolland will be significant and it's possible campbell's could push us over the top. saying this, i have no idea what it means.

i don't think the injury exemption stuff was true. that all originated from some message boards posters.

everybody has reported 55.2 million. im pretty sure thats our cap.

for people who have knowledge on the guys we've gotten back this offseason- how far away do you think most of them are from the NHL? will any of them help us this year?

Almost all of them are a year or two away. Stralberg can probably play right now, maybe one of the D. But with so many of them, the chances are pretty good at least one of them has a breakout camp.

Fiddling around on Capgeek, if the $55.2 figure is right, we are still about 2 million over if we retain everyone. :( Sharp or Bolland or Hjalmarsson are probably gone.

we better get a ransom for one of them, then. a motherfucking ransom.

Does that take the Huet situation into account?

Yes. Here's the closest I can get on capgeek, and that's being optimistic on Hjalmarsson and Niemi's resigning costs. Some of the cheaper young players may not make the team, I'm just using them as a proxy for a cheap player.

I'm pretty sure that Beach is not making the team. They have been saying that they will not rush players out of the AHL -- so keep the unready rookies off the list. Combined with Beach's hit, I think you'll see someone else. I think Skille is someone who they will trade if they can. The Hawks also want to resign Hendry for a small amount, which is why they didn't offer him a QO. Dowell and Reasoner seem to be redundant, so go with one of them.

I'm not sure who fills the slots, of course.

Kyle,

Are you looking at the offseason cap or the in-season cap? I'm assuming it's the latter and you're putting Huet in the minors.
