Are you looking at the offseason cap or the in-season cap? I'm assuming it's the latter and you're putting Huet in the minors.

In-season with Huet in the minors. I might be a little off, but I'm assuming Huet just takes up the 10% you can go over in the offseason, because we can't waive him until the season starts. But a lot of the cheap young guys don't count until the season starts, so we should be fine.

dustin penner didn't sign his offer sheet until august 2nd. i think most GMs would view offer sheets as a backup plan to a backup plan of another backup plan. they would rather acquire their players in a traditional manner especially so they don't seem slimy or backhanded when dealing with other GMs. they would much rather wait until the market shakes out.

plus there are other assets to give up in offer sheets as opposed to UFAs. the first rounder the oilers lost in the penner deal? that pick turned into tyler myers. gms horde draft picks like gold, they're going to have to be desperate to give them up.

I have a question for Hawks fans...with all the silly money that Defensemen seem to be getting in this FA period, are you concerned that Hjalmarrson this year and Seabrook next season will get offers that will be hard for the Hawks to match? Fortunately for the Hawks they tied up Kieth before the FA money raised the market to this silly level. As a Wings fan I was initially shocked the Wings resigned Lidstrom for 6.2 million, but with the high prices some mediocre second pairing dmen received it doesnt seem that bad for a 1 year deal.

Hjalmarsson, a little worried.

Seabrook, not at all. He already makes $3.5 million, and the Blackhawks have at least the $4.15 million in dead cap space coming off the books next season, so there's plenty of room to re-sign him for whatever it takes. Unless someone wants to get into four-draft pick territory, they'll match happily.

Next year is going to be a big year for FA dmen. So Seabrook will probably not garner anyone willing to give 4 picks. Hjalmarsson is better then any remaining FA dmen, I think I would be concerned also.

next question...If Hjalmarsson does get a contract that the Hawks cannot match, would you be willing to trade Sharp or Bolland for a Dman like Jack Johnson and use the money saved for next season to give a veteran top 6 forward (Bill Guerrin type) a one year deal to help fill the void?

I can't see it. They could probably find a one-year veteran replacement at D, even though they wouldn't be happy about it. But trading Bolland or Sharp just makes the forward lines fall apart.

Right now, the Blackhawks have $3.6 million in cap space plus the $5.9 million offseason buffer to work with. That should be plenty of room to match any offer sheet if they want to. Sure, it might make it nearly impossible to ice a team in the regular season, but their philosophy has always been to keep key players and figure out the cap implications later.

So unless a team goes absolutely nuts of Hjalmarsson, I think they match. If it's me, I match maybe even up to $4 million, I like him that much.

Niemi, on the other hand, I'd let walk for any 1st and 3rd offer sheet. But I don't know if Hawks brass feels the same way.

Bob Probert died today at age 45 after collapsing on a boat.

:bye:

RIP Probie.

What a warrior. I used his model Hespeler stick in high school. I don't know if I really like the stick or if I just thought he was a badass. Which he was.

Absolutely. The man was the definition of warrior, and will be missed greatly.

favorite player when I was a younster rip probie

edit...so doing a little reading I found that Probie, Yzerman and Kocur were all drafted in the same draft. I knew that about Probie and Stevie Y but didnt realize Kocur was taken in that draft also. This may be the most entertaining draft in NHL history/

That's waaay too young to keel over & die.

The man lived hard. Even if he had managed to clean himself up, that's gotta take a toll. Albom wrote a nice piece that is linked on the Tribune's site today.

Niemi files for arbitration. He's no longer an RFA now, if I understand the rules correctly. The Hawks can either take him at the arbiter's salary for one year (or two, but I can't recall anyone ever doing two years), re-sign him to a longer-term deal, or renounce his rights. The hearing will be within a month or so.

It's like baseball arbitration in that he gets compared to goalies with similar amounts of NHL experience, so I can't imagine he'd get all that much. Way less than some of the offer sheet fears.

He's a Cup winning goalie though. That's what Niemi's camp is gonna argue.

Nabokov headed to Russia to play in the KHL.

The recent success of the Hawks and the Wings have driven down the value of goalies in the NHL

I had many of the same issues while Probie was playing/serving jail time with the Wings

hjalmarsson signed to a 4 year, 14m offer sheet by san jose. chicago has 7 days to match or accept draft picks as compensation.

Yikes. Can we match that?

I think so. That's at the high end of what I was hoping for.
