over at fear the fin, they seem to be thinking there's a chance we won't match.

they also think if we do match, they'll get seabrook next year.

They are idiots. Seabrook already makes $3.5 and they have $4.2 in dead cap space coming off the books next season. Seabrook is going nowhere.

I think San Jose is actually going after either Nik or Niemi here. It's win-win. If the Hawks don't match, they get a very good young defensemen at about market value. They lose two late round picks, not a huge loss.

If the Hawks match, they likely can't afford Niemi and he becomes a UFA when there are really no other teams out there looking for a starting goaltender anymore. Philly needs to shed cap space, and I have no doubt San Jose would be the favorites to sign him (even though they claim to be fine with Nittymaki as their starter).

That said, I would love to see Niemi back on a cheap 1 year deal with a gentleman's agreement that he will cash in after another good year...however unlikely that may be.

If we match, how much money does that leave for Niemi?

Maybe $2 million if we squeeze things even tighter.

Could you give him a backloaded deal so we take less of a hit this year?

The cap hit is the average of the various years of the deal -- which is how the Hawks can afford to pay Hossa and Keith more $7M this year and next year.

So if the Hawks pay Niemi $1M for 2010-2011 and $3M for 2011-2012, the cap hit for both years would be $2M.

the sharks already signed a finnish goaltender to start for them. niemi would be pointless since he's the same exact goalie.

300 level thinks it's definitely an either or scenario with hammer and niemi. I have no idea what to do.

This sucks.....*goes back to watch SCF highlights on youtube*

Thx. Kinda thought that's how it worked, but thought I'd ask.

only 104,923 over with that team. there's gotta be some way to shave that much salary. perhaps marty turco will take like 1.75 mil and we jettison antti. but this is workable, they're almost there.

they gotta do something with Reasoner, I'd think. there's got to be a cheaper replacement.

There probably is but at some point you have to wonder how many untested players are you going to have to count on to perform key roles. At this point you are probably are going to have to go with 2 dmen, 3/4 forwards and a goalie who will be getting there first extended NHL time. Its not that I dont think the Hawks have the depth in their system, but the chances are that several of them will not play very well in their first time around.

and they're going to be bad, yes yes we know.

So bad that the Hawks will have to give up the Stanley Cup they just won.

oh, and the red wings are good. i forgot to say that.

you know sulley, I think my observation was very rational and had a decent point. If a Hawks fan would have made it I am sure you would not even thought twice about nor would you have taken it as some sort of slam(which it wasnt)

and yes teh wings are going to have 165 points next season, the NHL is going to give them a bonus point just to bother Sulley

if a hawks fan continued with the same level of skepticism regarding hawks success or future hawks success as you, i would pretty much do the same thing to them.

maybe you feel the strange need to balance out this already fairly balanced thread, i don't know. but there are plenty of hawks fans who are cautious about the future and aren't willing to declare this team a dynasty, you don't need to fight the non-existent, crazily optimistic fans here.

Not sure where you take a comment that basically was saying that Marty Reasoner is probably worth keeping as all of that. Also, I am sure that I have not been any more pr less critical of the Hawks future success then Drew Doughty, yet you chose to stupidly challenge almost every post I make about the Hawks and not his.

every post you make in this thread is a negative one, at least from the perspective of the blackhawks.

you should be more like drew.

So just to give you the benefit of the doubt I went back and read all my posts in this thread and found the only one that was negative was a response to a Hawks fan dogging on Wings fans. I think every other one was a reasonable hockey observation.

sulley says the same stuff to me. it's his thing. he's lovable.

the hawks are still a good team. it's not like the wings or blues or predators are making huge steps forward. i would probably still bet on them to win the division...they haven't lost one seriously crucial piece yet. hjalmarsson is close if they do lose him. ladd is close, but when the best player you're losing in a semi-firesale is a 3rd line winger or a decent 2nd pairing dman, you're doing pretty well for yourself. the red wings went much further backwards after their finals loss than the hawks did (hossa + hudler + old team) and they still managed to put together a pretty solid team.

i wonder if they'd keep hammer and niemi and let someone else go instead. letting niemi go might be a tougher sell than any other they've had, because it would be much tougher to justify ditching huet. turco is basically the same goalie at a cheaper price. hjalmarsson is tough to replace with the limited cap space they have. you can probably get a couple of veterans to fill out the 3rd pairing, or even just one veteran and one decent prospect and do pretty well for yourself. hell, the flyers made it to the finals on the back of chris pronger and the withering corpse of kimmo timonen. you can survive with 4 good d-men, especially in the playoffs.
