I do agree that a 1st is overpayment for Versteeg, but the Hawks got a first for Buff and he's less talented then Versteeg and they were abe to get a 1st and a2nd for him. So who knows, maybe Vancouver is subscribing the theory of "if you can't beat them, get them to join you."

again, just going by mckenzie, it sounds like a delay more than anything. says the hawks could hold out aliu until a point in time when the rest of the deal could be completed. the thrashers could just move another body.

versteeg is more talented but byfuglien was coming off a completely value-inflating playoff run. those sites aren't worth paying attention to because they don't gauge value. i don't doubt that eklund and possibly even the nhlsources guy have some actual inside info, but they disperse it so poorly that they aren't worth taking seriously or paying attention to for anything beyond derisive laughter.

All he said the Hawks "appear" to value Versteeg's game more. That was a good read. I don't know much about about hockey and on first glimpse I thought:

 

Reasoner's pretty old. He's probably a decent veteran presence to add. First and Second round picks? That's pretty good for not giving up a star. And who the hell is Morin?

I'm torn on who is more valuable. Mostly because I don't think either of them are all that important.

this deal does bail out the hawks, though not completely. regardless of "bailing them out" or not, a first for byfuglien is not a good deal. he had a great playoff run but he has been pretty mediocre throughout his regular season career. granted, it's only a 24th overall pick, but i just don't see why you'd give that up for buff.

 

I totally agree. Some of the posters on HFBoards are noting that Buff could be the "face of the franchise" given that he's a black player in Atlanta. Aliu too, to a smaller extent. Setting aside the oversimplicity of the racial component to this, Buff isn't cut out to be the face of any franchise. That's not his thing. He will not carry the load for anyone, and especially not for a bad team. Without motivation, he will disappear on the ice.

 

If they're looking for a black dude to be the face of the franchise in Atlanta, they already have him: Evander Kane.
