I'm not an expert, but seems like a good trade/value. I hate to lose Buff, but something had to be done and he was a sell-high possibility. I don't know much/anything about the players coming back, but the picks are nice. I do want to know if another move is compelled by the cap or not.

HFBoards was generally convinced that the Blackhawks cap situation would mean they'd have to dump all these players for nothing (usually to the poster making the post's favorite team). The same boards are now crying that Atlanta bailed out the Blackhawks and got completely trade-robbed.

I don't think it's that bad for Atlanta, but that's solid value for Chicago. Very happy, if it does go through.

according to bob mckenzie the trade isn't official yet for some reason, sounds like there's some hold up.

just read that they are waiting for league officials to land in LA to ok deal.

I think this is a great deal for the Hawks. Like DD said Ben Eagers are a dime a dozen and usually way over rated by fans. Sopel is a 3rd pairing dman who is way overpaid for what he does and Buff is great in front of the net but his overall game is not worth a 1st and 2nd round pick.

I don't think it's a good deal at all for them. As much as I appreciate Buff's play in the playoffs this year I don't think theres anyway I'd give up a 1st round pick for him (even with the other 3). I certainly wouldn't give up a 1st and essentially two 2nds for them.

I think they got robbed.

To be fair, ATL only gave up a useful bottom 6 forward and top 3 prospect in their system. The picks they got from NJ for the Kovaluchuk (sp?) dea. So ATL may have felt they were playing with house money with the NJ picks.

I agree with you, tho. Giving up a 1st and a 2nd for Buff, and that is what this deal basically is, was not a great deal for Atlanta.

Looks like a very good deal for the Hawks. They weren't afraid to sell high on Buf. Very smart.

That's what I expected from Bowman. He's not the kind of guy you worry about getting too attached or overrating players because of the run.

Sharp is and was the most important forward to hang onto.

Wow. WTG Stan. That's an amazing haul to get back for three guys they had to unload. And everything I read was that Aliu seriously underachieved this year and the organization had their doubts about him. And Beach does what he does better anyway.

I don't think the Hawks are done stocking up on draft picks yet.

this deal does bail out the hawks, though not completely. regardless of "bailing them out" or not, a first for byfuglien is not a good deal. he had a great playoff run but he has been pretty mediocre throughout his regular season career. granted, it's only a 24th overall pick, but i just don't see why you'd give that up for buff.

I totally agree. Some of the posters on HFBoards are noting that Buff could be the "face of the franchise" given that he's a black player in Atlanta. Aliu too, to a smaller extent. Setting aside the oversimplicity of the racial component to this, Buff isn't cut out to be the face of any franchise. That's not his thing. He will not carry the load for anyone, and especially not for a bad team. Without motivation, he will disappear on the ice.

Agreed. There are very few people that actually wanted to see Buff go, but those people knew someone had the go and it was the one who is already maxed out his potential. As Rosenbloom mentioned in his blog that Buff played well when he had a shot at the US team (I still maintain, he should have made it), but as soon as he didn't make it his play tailed off. This tells me that Buff plays when it benefits himself. I hope he does well in Atlanta, but something tells me he isn't going to be nearly as good on the Thrashers.

Kovalchuck led the NHL in scoring the last few years, and no one even talked about him down here. The Atlanta franchise really got hurt when they had to trade him. They offered him $100 million, and he said no. I think that was the last straw for the franchise here under the current ownership. One ownership group controls the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers, and word is they are trying to sell both. I bet they go to Canada somewhere just like the Flames. The only way to get black people to like hockey in Atlanta is to get Jordan to play center for the Thrashers. Hockey will never be big in Atlanta. But the Thrashers had to make this move to try to make a splash. They can't wait 5 years to get good beacuse they are losing $20 million a year.

Awesome, Kane, Toews, Keith, Sharp and Q all came out to announce the plays of the year during the awards show. Kaner got a haircut finally.

Why would the league block the trade?

they wouldn't block it, there just hasn't been an official "trade call" yet. just means the teams haven't finalized it, and that everything we've heard so far is just agreed to in principle. some speculation was, as mentioned, that the teams were waiting for league personnel to land in LA. i've also heard that they're just waiting for the awards show to end. just kind of strange for it to be delayed for so long.

eta: mckenzie just tweeted that it's because this trade puts atlanta over the 50 contracted players limit, so now it's just a matter of them waiving or trading someone.
