I would agree though that having Bolland as the #3 center is possibly depth that we can't afford to have considering Bolland is probably a #2 center on many teams.

Yeah, but I think you will see the Hawks bump Bolland up to 2nd Line Center and Sharp return to wing, if he is still here.

Which leaves Dowell to center the checking line with Madden gone. Of course, there have been internet reports that the Hawks have signed or will sign Niklas Persson out of the Swedish league.

I really like Bolland.

And I think you trade the guys who get you the most in return, not necessarily the guys you think you can most afford to lose.

In that case, we should trade toews right away.

If Persson has indeed signed he would be the 3rd line center and he would essentially replace Madden on the roster.

If we package him with Keith we might be able to get a great haul of cheap replacements

I'm not sure you necessarily trade by most value or most tradeable. I'd prefer they do deals based on perceived value vs. actual value. In this case, I think Byfuglien and Bolland have more perceived value than actual value. Versteeg perhaps as well. Niemi too if he's asking for 4 mil per.

Obviously I'm talking about among the group of possible trade bait.

There's a balance either way. If you can get a ton for Sharpie, you do it. But he wouldn't be my first choice to trade because his real value to perceived value isn't as gapped as others' are, imo.

Kyle's saying that Sharp should be moved over Buff because literally every cent is going to count in the offseason. $900,000 is a lot to be saved for a team that is playing right up to the cap going into next season. I agree that Sharp is the better player (I don't even think it's that close, really) but he's still making more money.

There's going to be a move or two made in the next few days, I think.

I hate the thought of trading Sharp cause he is one of the original players who started the Hawks road back to respectability, but if they get a good deal (ie high draft pick, 2nd rd, plus a top 6 prospect) I could see the Hawks making the trade. But I prefer they don't give players away for the sake of getting out of "Cap hell."

We're not going to have a choice this offseason. Obviously you don't really want to get rid of any of these players that are being talked about in deals, with the exception being Huet. In a perfect world, we'd be able to keep Sharp, Buff, Versteeg, Campbell, etc. That's obviously not going to happen.

There isn't really a general NHL offseason thread, but it has officially begun: Montreal traded Jaroslav Halak to the Blues for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz.

Actually it began 3 hours ago when the posts above were made :)

That was in French. Now it's on ESPN. ;)

that may be the dumbest trade proposal i have ever seen. the hawks give away three good young top 6 forwards, maybe four (depends on how you view ladd), a top 4 d-man, their best defense prospect and a late first round pick for a second or third line center who's 31 years old, has a horrendous contract and was a -29 last year, a 33 year old defenseman (souray) with a bad contract and injury problems, two players they're going to waive and the #1 overall pick. not to mention that the teams are trading goaltenders for absolutely no reason.

I usually don't like t fantasy trades like that, but this one was too good to pass up. So essentially half of Stanley Cup Champion for the #1 pick. Sounds fair....

Blues fans are beside themselves with joy over this trade and it seems the Montreal fans are the exact opposite. But Halak really didn't do much more than Huet did two years ago. And Eller may well turn out to be a solid second or third-line forward.

That all could happen -- but more likely the Blues just got themselves a steal.

And yes, the NHL doesn't need it's own offseason thread separate from the Hawks so let's just combine them.
