the flyers traded ryan parent (not surprising, considering how sparingly he played in the playoffs) for dan hamhuis and a conditional draft pick. i would guess the pick is a mid to late round pick and we'd get from nashville if we don't end up signing hamhuis to a long term deal. he'd be a great third pairing d-man, but i suspect that he's too expensive to fill that role and we'll end up trading carle or coburn. either that or we'll just put out a great defense and try to win with two turds (leighton/boucher) in net.

Interesting that Ryan Parent is going back to the Nashville organization.

I like Dan Hamhuis, but isn't he a UFA in a few days? I'm assuming Philly wouldn't have went for him if they werent gonna resign him though.

hamhuis was the fellow whom truffle and i had a brief snit over regarding his flopping in game 5.

gotcha

To be fair sulley...it's you. Pretty much everyone's had a "brief snit" with you regarding SOMETHING.

I see Nashville getting rid of very good players, but I know they will still manage to be a giant pain in the ass next year.

I think its probably smart of Nashville to do this. They really kind of maxed out the talent they had there. They need to pick up some scoring now.

As long as they keep staying 15 million below the cap you are probably right. I wonder how good they could be if they would make a free agent splash and sign a couple of top 6 forwards to go along with the team that was there.

The NHLPA will vote on the escalator clause sometime later today.

If they vote yes, the salary cap goes up by about $2 million for next season, but the escrow the NHL takes out of their paychecks (in order to guard against revenue shortfalls) will also get 5% larger. That means anyone who isn't signing a new contract this offseason effectively gets a 5% paycut.

If they vote no, then the salary cap stays the same or goes down by a few hundred thousand.

The vote has been close the last few times, and this time it is expected to be very close, although a "yes" vote is still the favorite.

If they vote no, though, the Blackhawks cap problems go from "troubling" to "completely screwed for next season." You'd almost be looking at a lineup of Hossa, Toews, Kane, Keith, Campbell, Seabrook and 15 league minimum guys.

I would think the Hawks have to make a move this week?

There's barely been any rumors or anything.

I've seen a few. hfboards.com is a good place, although you'll get tons of idiotic speculation mixed in with the actual rumors.

Recent rumors include: Blackhawks want a 2nd for Versteeg, but whoever does that has to take Sopel as well.

They are willing to move Byfuglien.

A lot of teams are interested in Sharp.

I definitely believe those last two. I'd really like to hold on to Sharp though.

Rumor: Kaberle and Grabovski for Sharp and Campbell.

I don't like it, personally. I feel like we lose too much for not enough cap gain. We can save on the cap by moving guys like Versteeg and Byfuglien without losing near as much on the ice.

I guess their point is you get a servicable and cheaper D player back, as well as a forward with upside and also cheaper.

There are 2 ways you can look at what the Hawks have to do, you can trade for slightly lesser skilled veterans for your younger and more skilled players, of you can try to use this situation to stockpile prospects draft picks and younger players that haven't reached their potential yet. I think the Hawks are looking more of the later.

I just don't want to be trading $7 million defensemen for worse $5 million defensemen, or $4 million forwards for worse $3 million forwards. I want super-cheap young players or nothing at all.

tomas kaberle has been in about 379 trade rumors since he debuted with the maple leafs. i remember when the flyers and eric lindros had their falling out, kaberle was supposed to be one of the pieces coming back to the flyers from the leafs (who everyone thought were going to end up with lindros)
