i haven't been paying much attention to the cobs so i don't know if there's a reason for this..... but why is fontenot at short and theriot at 2b today? i mean, forget the fact that castro isn't in. why are their positions switched?

basically just wondering if there's an actual reason for this, or if it's just lou doin his thing

When Castro came up Lou said that Fontenot would continue to be the backup at SS because they wanted Theriot to become fully acclimated at 2B without switching back and forth.

Good thing that Lou will be gone after this year at the latest, otherwise, this could spell the beginning of Castros journey to Baltimore for a PTBNL.

Isn't this the first day off Starlin's had since being called up? I wouldn't read a thing into it.

didn't he play 2B for like, years?

293 games in the minors at 2B, 118 games in the majors at 2B (including this year).

So a little over 2 years worth of time at second between the minors and majors.

He didn't start either yesterday or today. Lou said that because he ended up playing 4 innings after entering yesterday's game due to it going 13 innings that he wanted to give him a real day off today.

It's the second day in a row he didn't start (although he did come in as a pinch runner and stay in to play SS yesterday).

Thanks fellas. I was confusing myself off the top of my head when his first day came (couldn't remember if it was yesterday's game or today's).

I still wouldn't put much stock into this, though.

I know this has probably been discussed ad nauseum on here, but I just thought it'd be worth pointing out that Geovany Soto is second only to Jorge Posada among all MLB catchers with at least 150 PA in wOBA. And yet Lou continually benches him. If that's not frustrating, I don't know what is.

Just venting. Both the Cubs and my fantasy team are suffering.

Koyie Hill starting again today. Lou seriously is platooning these guys at this point. How many starts has Soto had in the last month vs RH pitchers?

Soto has roughly 59 PA and a 950 OPS in June, Hill is at 35 and 688.

RIght, and Im pretty sure the majority of Soto's PA have come against all the leftys we have faced this month. Hill has had the majority of PA vs RH pitchers that we have faced this month.

I think you're probably right. Unfortunately Lou seems to be looking at incorrect stats again. I know they've mentioned the fact that Hill has a better BA against right-handers as a reason he is starting a decent amount. I also wonder if the fact that Hill's BA is over 300 points higher than Soto with RISP is factoring into it. That seems like something Lou would probably look at with all his team's struggles in that department this year. I just wish he would look at the bigger picture and not things with small sample sizes that are going to change eventually.

I just looked it up, and Geo has started 4 games the entire month vs RH pitching.

Lou apparently wants to go out with a tremendous bang. Not only will Cub fans hate him forever, but fantasy league managers will hate him forever, also.

In my case, I double hate him.

Lou is doing a great job of suppressing Soto's contract for next season, as well as saving his legs for all those playoff games he'll be catching in future years. What a saint.

I seriously hope Koyie Hill dies in a car accident, or cuts the rest of his fingers off or something. I have nothing against the guy personally, but something needs to happen to keep Lou from overusing him.

I posted this in the game thread, but I'm going to post it here as well. The Cubs have a .391 winning % when Hill starts (23 games). They also only score 3.6 runs per game in those starts.

The entirety of the abomination that is the season series with Pittsburgh is reason enough to get this done.

Is anyone home in the chairman's office?

Lou needs to stay. We need a top 3 pick and Lou being here is probably the best way to ensure that happens. Plus he is going to help keep Geo cost controlled. Win Win.

Lee and Ramirez have hit like crap all year, Zambrano has another meltdown and is on the restricted list, yet we should fire Lou because he has shorted Geovany Soto a few at bats? . I am guessing this "thought" process is just a bunch of fans looking for a scapegoat of some sort, blindly lashing out at a horrible team assembled by Jim Hendry.

Can't really say I blame you, but firing Piniella accomplishes next to nothing.

He's done more than that. He has played Ryan Theriot over a Mike Fontenot and Jeff Baker platoon. He has batted Ryan Theriot and his ~.280obp leadoff. He has misused Sean Marshall all year long, to the point that we've had to put our top prospect and ace in the 8th inning roles this year. Both moves having seriously negative impact on our franchise's future. But, with all that said, it doesn't matter. This team isn't good enough as it is built to do any real damage and thus I'd rather tank than finish with 75 wins.

except for getting rid of a terrible manager who constantly makes astonishingly bad baseball decisions.

it does accomplish that
