Big 12 is going to reassess the name over the coming months and decide if they need to change it or not. I doubt they will.

I could care less, though I would prefer just to call it the SWC again.

I'm sure the non-Texas schools would love that

it's better than the proposed "Texas 10"

They should call it the Texas Longhorn TV Network Conference at this rate. They just broke a deal for a home and home with Minnesota because they wouldn't agree to the same TV rights that every other member of the conference has agreed to.

Yahoo"]• Those are oddly well-formed storm and melodramatic clouds for downtown Los Angeles, even for summer.

• The number of bowl victories and national championships remains unchanged, for now. The university may be disappearing Bush, but it won't part with the fruits of his on-field labors without a final say-so from the NCAA appeals committee.

• Lane Kiffin's face looks strangely bloated. Is there chaw in that mouth? Because that might endear him to latest angry faction of Tennesseans he's stirred up this summer.

And

Yahoo"]Georgia plans to reprint about 14,000 football media guides to replace references to ousted athletics director Damon Evans.

The Bulldogs' annual media guide, which is distributed to donors and recruits as well as the media, was printed shortly before Evans' June 30 DUI arrest and subsequent resignation.

"The timing made it a very unusual circumstance," Georgia associate athletics director Claude Felton told the AJC. "After discussions among Alan Thomas in the development office, [interim AD] Frank Crumley and myself, we felt like the best thing under the circumstances would be to do a partial reprint."

Another reason to stop printing media guides.

registerguard.com"]Jeremiah Masoli is on campus at Mississippi today but has not yet enrolled there. Reportedly, he’ll take graduate courses in parks and recreation management if he’s admitted.

Ron Swanson does not approve.

dew, what do you think of the Bryce Brown mess?

bryce brown is toxic. i remember being so disappointed when i realized stoops and co. basically cut off contact with he and his brother, but, as usual, i should just trust people smarter than me

is it too much/too soon to ask Andy to do the week 1 post already?

we forfeited this baseball season (not that it wasn't dead, already) and I am basically about to S my pants awaiting some football.

Me too, and I don't even have much to look forward to. My team could could easily go 4-8. (Although I predict 6-6.)

I'm going to do it once the preseason AP rankings are released. I'm completely in your boat.

Speaking of which, anyone want their teams added to the "teams of interest" column that isn't there already?

dew, what do you think of the Bryce Brown mess?

It's a complete mess. For the longest time, the word was that Bryce wanted to come back to Tennessee, but that his dad was pressuring him to come back home and play with his brother at K-State. After last season going a month past NSD to pick a school, it didn't seem that odd for him to take an extended period to decide that.

However, he was supposed to meet with Dooley last Tuesday morning before flying back to Kansas. The meeting never happened. Instead, he just texted to Dooley that he wasn't coming back to UT. His dad apparently went ballistic when he heard that and the last I heard was that Bryce and Dooley were supposed to meet last Thursday. As far as I know, Bryce hasn't asked for his released yet, but it's assumed he will pretty soon.

UT fans are unsurprisingly pretty upset at Bryce, but happy that he finally made a decision. I'm disappointed that he decided to leave as he was probably the only real feature back on the roster. We'll probably go with a Tauren Poole/David Oku duo running the ball this year, which should be solid, but Bryce has more upside than either of them.

was brown a freshman in 09 or is he an upcoming freshman?

He was a freshman in '09, but you didn't hear about him because he could barely get carries on the juggernaut Tennessee offense.

More like if you didn't hear about him you just weren't watching any Tennesee games, especially early in the year.

101 carries for a true freshman playing behind a good back like Hardesty with a QB that can't consistently move the chains isn't exactly being buried on the bench.

Okay, barely got carries was overstating it, the point was that he wasn't all that effective, especially considering the hoopla surrounding him.

Masoli is going to make a huge difference in Ole Miss' season. Snead leaving early left the QB situation in a lurch with Nathan Stanley being the only viable option. The players are apparently big fans of Stanley and he seems to have a very strong arm, but he's about as green as it gets for an SEC starting QB with perhaps only a dozen snaps in game action. Also, I'm glad to see he is handling this Masoli thing with a lot of grace, which I suppose makes sense because he wasn't supposed to be starting this year anyways (most figured Snead was coming back).

Masoli is pretty much a one year mercenary, but he is really going to help. I'm predicting they go from a 6-7 win team to an 8 win team and maybe even 9.

The hoopla was because he was the #1 player in the nation and had a lot of drama surrounding his signing with Tennessee (committing to Miami, de-committing and then taking an extra month to make a decision).

He apparently had a hip issue last season and also had some issues adjusting to major college play. I think he'll eventually be a really good back.

I don't know what Ole Miss' QB situation is like otherwise but I think Masoli is going to be a disaster in the SEC. System QB through and through.

I could be wrong but the guy is way overrated in my book. He's definitely a rhythm QB in that when he's rolling he can destroy you but he leaves a lot of plays on the field with bad passes and dumb decisions. Plus the Ole Miss system is nothing like Oregon's.

Houston Nutt's offense is perfect for him though. Nutt is generally given credit for bringing the wildcat offense to the mainstream and that is what he would prefer to run all the time if it were up to him I'd think.

Furthermore, the Rebels got the top rated JUCO QB in the country last year, Randall Mackey, who is an ultimate wildcat QB with his 4.5 speed. I think Nutt is going to have a lot of fun drawing up plays for both of those guys.

Masoli is a terrific fit imo.

Accepting a felon with open arms so he can enroll in your "Parks and Rec" grad program. Giving him punishment for two arrests within 5 months and being an absolute idiot other than praising him for coming to help you win games.

You're right, he is a terrific fit at Ole Miss and in the SEC.

I never said he was a role model. I already stated that he was a mercenary. Furthermore, if you read SI's latest article about him, it explains that his "convictions" weren't really what they seemed.

Jeremiah Masoli: A Rebel's Naked Hypocrisy at Ole Miss

In the case of former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, there are no good guys.

Masoli exposes the ugly center of major college football, where everyone uses everyone else while claiming to embrace the purity of the student athlete. There's a cynicism about every decision that's being made, a glazed-eye look, the reality of a sport that's sold it's soul.

Consider, Ole Miss and Houston Nutt need a quarterback because Jevan Snead made one of the worst decisions in recent memory to leave school early. Snead went undrafted, and the Rebels were left holding the bag, a predicted sixth-place finish by the media in the SEC West.

From a projected Top-10 team last season to bottom of the SEC barrel in one fell swoop. Nutt, who despite 13-years of helming up teams in the SEC, has never been able to recruit and develop a good quarterback, needs a new signal-caller so bad that he's willing to admit a player who has never been on campus before. Nutt's motives have nothing to do with giving a quarterback a third chance, and everything to do with his own team's deficiencies. If Snead is still on campus, is Nutt remotely interested in giving Masoli a third chance?

Of course, not.

Starting to hear some rumors again about Texas A&M to the SEC. It all stems from the $20MM guarantee that Beebe made to us to keep us in the Big 12. Texas & OU said they would not take money from the other teams to get to the guarantee, but A&M officials said they expect Beebe to fulfill his promises to us. I think people are starting to realize that he wrote checks that he couldn't cover. I think we are going to ask for that guarantee in writing. If we don't get it, I expect our president to call up his new friend SEC Commissioner Mike Slive and talk about when the Aggies can start SEC play. Stay tuned for further developments.

Paterno is essentially talking about how he doesn't want to be in a position where he poops himself in public.
