Wow. I guess USC doesn't give two craps about sanctions.

Kiffin and Orgeron were already ticking sanctions at Tennessee.

Say good bye to Norm Chow. He's being targeting as well.

Swing and a miss

it's going to be so interesting to see how USC's fans react to Kiffin. They've had 9 years of Pete Carroll and his Bill & Ted, hang loose attitude, and now they're going to have to deal with a controversy magnet who seems proficient at pissing people off

To be honest, The Voice of Reason is the only Trojan fan I have seen who is actually happy with the hire. In fact, a few I know actually are even more upset/disappointed than when they found out Carroll was leaving.

You're totally high if you don't think the majority of SC fans are happy with the staff that's being brought in and the ability to salvage/improve the recruiting class. Given the circumstances, it's being received as a pretty damn good hire.

It's a calculated risk obviously with Kiffin being unproven as a head coach and the baggage that comes along with him and losing out on Chow sucks but I'd say most are happy.

There's zero question that the reaction is orders of magnitude more positive than when Carroll was initially hired.

Hearing on the local radio that "multiple reports" are saying Troy Calhoun is the choice at Tennessee.

Calhoun's called a team meeting for 5:50 pm today.

Meanwhile, Skip Holtz just got hired at South Florida.

Maybe the fans I know aren't as levelheaded but they sure thought they were getting either a bigger name or someone without the baggage that Kiffin is bringing.

Really good hire by USF.

And I think the choice is Calhoun, but there are still some rumblings that Cutcliffe has the job.

Is Mike Riley a bigger name to USC fans than Lane Kiffin? I'm not even sure that Jeff Fisher and Jack Del Rio are bigger names than Lane Kiffin to many USC fans. Lot of 'em don't even follow the NFL.

Kiffin's name is obviously a lot bigger than what his accomplishments on the field dictate but his name recognition among SC fans is sky high.

If the hire is Calhoun, I'm happy enough with it. Obviously, a Muschamp, Stoops or somebody like that would be more exciting, but Calhoun's resume is solid and he turned Air Force from a 5-7 win team to an 8-10 win team in no time. He's young enough to be a long term hire (one of the negatives concerning Kippy Brown and Cutcliffe) and won't likely bolt to another program any time soon. While I'd like to see it, I doubt he brings along the triple option since he's very familiar with running a pro-style offense with Denver and Houston.

My only question is, can he recruit at Tennessee?

Well, the people I talked to were hoping for Riley, Fisher, Del Rio (and even Harbaugh and Bellotti). Especially Fisher.

The LA press has been pretty hard on the Kiffin hire. I don't know any actual fans, though.

the majority of them only claim to be fans when the trojans win a title

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that Bowden is gone and that we were able to get Fisher installed before this mess hit the fan.

Now Calhoun may have turned down the job. Cutcliffe may be in play yet.

[expletive]

Air Force released a statement from Troy Calhoun saying that he will remain at the school. Rumors are that Hamilton is hot on the trail of Cutcliffe.

I think Cutcliffe could do really well at Tennessee, but I am really hoping he stays. We could not get anybody like him this time around I think.

The USC fan I know -- part of the reason I suppose I have stood up for them on here some -- is happy with Kiffen. Though she is real disappointed about Norm Chow staying at UCLA.

Yeah, I really hate to poach a coach from Duke at this point, but Cutcliffe is simply a fantastic coach and would be a good hire, I think. I wonder if hiring him would give us a shot at Rodney Garner from Georgia?

I was hoping Calhoun would get the job and keep the same offense. Anyone that doesn't run a variation of the spread is good with me. Someone who rightfully believes you can still run a version of the triple option as the backbone of your offense is great. Paul Johnson is the man.

Cutcliffe always seemed like a really good guy who got the shaft at Ole Miss.

I'd love to see if the triple option would work in the SEC. With the right talent, I think it would.

As for Cutcliffe, I thought he shouldn't have been fired from Ole Miss and his short tenure at Duke so far is showing more what he's capable of. I do have some questions on his ability to recruit, but if he keeps guys like Kippy Brown and Lance Thompson and could bring in a guy like Rodney Garner, there will be plenty of recruiting ability on the staff.

It can work anywhere with the right personnel. It's worked very well in the ACC and GT fans insist that the current o-line is not a good fit. No one else runs it so you get the same advantages that versions of the spread had when less talented teams were the only ones running it. The "defenses" got too fast argument is bunk.

I just hate seeing so many damn teams going shotgun with 4-5 wide and throwing bubble screens and 3 yard hitches all game.

I just hate the option. It's so dull and unimaginative.

I can see that but when only a few teams are running it, I love it. I think what a lot of the "spread" teams are doing is really dull and unimaginative.

Georgia Tech's offense (outside of the Iowa game) is really explosive against some good teams.
