I was hoping Calhoun would get the job and keep the same offense. Anyone that doesn't run a variation of the spread is good with me. Someone who rightfully believes you can still run a version of the triple option as the backbone of your offense is great. Paul Johnson is the man.

Cutcliffe always seemed like a really good guy who got the shaft at Ole Miss.

I'd love to see if the triple option would work in the SEC. With the right talent, I think it would.

It can work anywhere with the right personnel. It's worked very well in the ACC and GT fans insist that the current o-line is not a good fit. No one else runs it so you get the same advantages that versions of the spread had when less talented teams were the only ones running it. The "defenses" got too fast argument is bunk.

I just hate seeing so many damn teams going shotgun with 4-5 wide and throwing bubble screens and 3 yard hitches all game.

I like the spread option a lot too, but moreso the more imaginative ones like Meyer's or Malzahn's. And the triple option is based more on misdirection than speed, so the "defense is too fast" argument doesn't mean much.

Exactly. That was the standard answer when Nebraska had some semi-down years and any form of the option disappeared.

I just hate the option. It's so dull and unimaginative.

I can see that but when only a few teams are running it, I love it. I think what a lot of the "spread" teams are doing is really dull and unimaginative.

Georgia Tech's offense (outside of the Iowa game) is really explosive against some good teams.

I'll admit I didn't watch a lot of GT football this year, but in the bowl game I was looking forward to seeing what they were doing that was so special. After watching it, I came away wondering what the big deal was.

The problem with bowl games for the option is you get a month to prepare for it. Good coaching can catch up to that given enough time. GT's lost both bowl games since Johnson arrived, one was a rout and this year wasn't that close either.

He's a VERY good dude and a great football mind, but he's not a very good recruiter imo.

I will say that he is VERY conservative with his offenses though and very predictable. We used to play a Cutcliffe drinking game when we'd watch the Rebs play on TV. VERY predictable playcalling.

And it's probably going to get worse as more people get to look at it. It's a gimmick system that kills quarterbacks, and modern football is a quarterback's sport. It's also incredibly dull.

At Tennessee:

Gruden was approached to gauge interest. He said no.

Muschamp turned down an offer of 3+ million dollars per year over 5 or 6 years.

Calhoun said he was not interested.

Now the names being discussed are Derrek Dooley and David Cutcliffe. Sigh.

Why not call Whittingham? Why not make a run at Stoops (which has been rumored by a few underground sources, but does not look to have any legs)? Why not someone who's going to make a splash? I like Cut as a person, and I think he's a good coach, but settling for him is just that- settling. IF Cutcliffe (HC/QB) keeps our current staff and then brings in a solid RB coach (Jay Graham? Please NO Kurt Roper), a great DL coach (Rodney Garner?) and a solid ST coach, I guess I could live with it, but I can assure you that Vol fans will absolutely be divided on this hire. The ones who are glad that Fulmer is gone will not be thrilled with Cutcliffe. I think there will be a very distinct demographic on who likes and who hates this move, and it will be based on the age of the fans, for the most part.

You also saw what Navy and Air Force did in their bowl games against superior talent.

Tech's problem was that Iowa's front 7 was one of the best in the country this year AND they're a disciplined, well coached defense. Football Outsiders numbers ranked Iowa's defense 2nd in the country to Alabama. They also faced a great LSU defense in their bowl game last year.

At this point in the offseason, there's no coach available who the entire fanbase can rally behind from the start. Even Muschamp wouldn't have been that type of hire. If we can pull off a Stoops coup, that'd do it, but Stoops just isn't realistic if we want to stay in the $3 million range for our HC.

As for Cutcliffe, he's not ideal, but he's a fantastic coach who can assemble a very good staff. If he does that, then he's be about the best option possible when hiring a coach in the middle of January when almost every other position has been filled. He'd be a short term guy, but would give us the ability in 3-4 years to really find a great long-term coach.

GaTech's O-line wasn't brought there to run the option, either. I suspect that as Johnson gets his recruits in there that the option will flow even better for them.

That's the biggest thing right now is that Johnson is running the triple option with a bunch of players brought in to be in a non-triple option offense. Let's see how he does 2-3 years from now when more of his type of players are there.

Chow staying at UCLA

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow is staying at UCLA, rebuffing overtures from Lane Kiffin to return to USC.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel confirmed Thursday that Chow, a widely respected offensive mastermind during nearly four decades in college football, will be back for a third season with the Bruins.

USC athletic director Mike Garrett acknowledged Wednesday he hoped to lure Chow to Kiffin's new staff with a lucrative offer, but Chow decided not to switch sides in Los Angeles' fierce football rivalry.

"I appreciate the interest from USC and Lane Kiffin, but I feel we are building something special here at UCLA, and I am excited about our future," Chow said. "We have some outstanding young players in the program, and we're working hard on finishing strong in recruiting."

And therein lies the rub. He wants to bring his entire staff with him. That's what sucks. I like Cut. Roper and Luke? Ugh.

My only hope is that this info is the same as every other bit of info to come out in the past 4 days.... worthless.

"Too premature" to say Cutcliffe is the new UT head coach, says Brent Hubbs (Volquest Rivals guy). And the merry-go-round continues to run.

Stay away from our coach, UT.

Skip Holtz has skipped town for USF. Honestly, I have mixed feelings. On one hand he lead us to back to back conf USA championships. On the other hand, we looked completely overmatched this year in most OOC games and some of his in-game decisions made me scratch my head.

Either way, you have to move forward mow. I suppose Leech is a pipe dream, but I could see Jagodzinski being a real possibility with his ECU ties.

Who knows of the accuracy of this 10-millionth source, but here we go.

So just to clarify the indignation rules, leaving Duke after 2 years to go to Tennessee is perfectly ok but leaving Tennessee after 1 year to go USC is an outrage. Just want to be sure so I know whether to be prepared to burn some mattresses if this happens.

Leaving Duke for Tennessee is a slightly different animal than Tennessee to USC, considering the difference in personalities and the difference in those coaches' results (comparative to program expectations).

So you're comparing a coach publicly listening to a university's offer and including his staff in the conversation to a coach who pursued a school (he contacted USC, according to reports) and accepted a job while his Athletic Director was out of town without telling most of his staff? Yep, he didn't even tell his own brother-in-law, who was his QB coach, and instead let him find out by watching the news in Orlando and then did not answer or return his phone calls. Then, at the team meeting that happens AFTER his team has found out via ESPN, his top recruiter and assistant coach is heard by current players VIA SPEAKER PHONE telling currently enrolled recruits not to attend class the next morning in order to make transferring easier.

Yep, that's pretty much the same thing. Blindsiding your entire university (including nearly your entire staff) is the same thing as publicly discussing a potential coaching move and including your entire staff in the discussion. Nearly identical.

Not crazy about that. There are a lot of good coaches here and I'd like to keep a few of them (Kippy and Lance Thompson especially).
