Latest from Basilio, the radio host who broke this Lovie stuff last night:

Rumor: Huge donor to UT (several hundred thousand per year) just shot me a text and says the Bears are helping Lovie get out of his buyout and that he's the guy. He expects Lovie to be here today and be introduced!

Also Cutcliffe has officially withdrawn from consideration. Your coach is staying Vanilla Ice and chuckywang.

Now Basilio says this...

Yep, just read that. I have no idea what's accurate at this point.

I bet Bill Lynch would be interested if UT asked him.

. . . Please?

hahaha...had the same conversation yesterday, but i was thinking Duke.

what does BigBird have to say about all this?

Bigbird says: Kiffin to USC was actually a three-way trade. Three coaches to USC, cash to the Orioles and Brian Roberts to UT. He'll be our running game coordinator . . .

Great news! It doesn't matter to me that he only stayed because Tennessee wouldn't allow him to bring in his own staff. I'm just glad that Duke finally has some coaching stability, and perhaps some good exposure when recruiting starts up again soon.

And this is why I didn't want to get my hopes up.

Something (radio station?) called the Sports Animal is reporting that Dooley is the new UT head coach.

Also, The Score is saying Lovie is staying in Chicago, and is not at all interested in coaching at the college level.

Yes, the Sports Animal is a local radio station down there (I only know this because they carry Tennessee Smokies baseball).

Yep, it's the only 24 hour sports station local to Knoxville. They have reported that the UT plane is on its way to Ruston to pick up Dooley and that the deal is not done, but is close. Dooley has yet to tell his staff, they say, but likely will after the deal is done. It sounds completely done, but the Muschamp and Cutcliffe deals were apparently this close (or nearly) as well, so who knows.

That said, sorry Bear fans. I wish we could have poached your coach.

Well the Dooley deal is close enough that it's on ESPN.com.

As for a potential Dooley hire, I'm torn on it. He's one of the "up and coming" young coaches who is the son of former Georgia head coach and AD Vince Dooley. The younger Dooley has been head coach at Louisiana Tech for three years (I think) and has been AD as well since March of 2008.

It sounds like he'll keep most or all of the current staff intact, which I like, and will have recruiting and coaching ties to most of the south. That's all good, but much like Lane Kiffin last year, Dooley is pretty unproven and has some Xs and Os questions. We'll see, but considering we started the search on Jan. 12, it's a decent hire with upside.

Cutcliffe to UT was also being reported on ESPN, I think.

And now that ESPN article has been edited to say this:

Louisiana Tech football coach Derek Dooley, son of legendary coach Vince Dooley, has emerged as the top candidate to replace Lane Kiffin as Tennessee's football coach, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Friday.

An announcement could be made by Tennessee officials as early as Friday. However, a source told ESPN.com that the deal is not finalized and that Houston's Kevin Sumlin remains a possibility.

Guys, maybe you all didn't see my post a couple pages ago, but EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY is in the middle of a coaching hunt. Let's get back on track here... :-)

I read somewhere on the Innerwebs that Lovie Smith was the leading candidate at ECU with Norm Chow and Will "Coach Boom" Muschamp expected to join his staff their as coordinators.

You can still have the coach Tennessee should have hired – Mike Leach. :D

Yeah. Even when the hangman's noose is being fitted over his neck in his current job, Lovie doesn't want to take a solid opportunity to start again.

I would have bolted for UT in a second. That's a solid college job. SEC. Tons of national TV coverage.
