Eh, well. It was worth a shot to try to get him at a new position. Overall I've been pleased with my impressions of Kelly's recruiting so far.

The biggest problems I had with Shula was that he encourages cliques, he placate to star players (ie DJ Hall  ), and he geniunely seems to be disinterested in establishing discipline. He might work at a school like ECU.

What does this even mean?

He didn't really care for discipline, he never had control of the team. For the most part he didn't have a plan on what he wanted to accomplished as a coach. In other words, he pretty much tried to "wing it" as a coach. And we both now that the best coaches are often micromanagers. Micromanager Mike Shula was not.

Although I have my doubts that is why he truly failed, my question was why the hell would he have worked for ECU, then?

But it's since been clarified. Thanks guys.

The main reason why he failed was the probaton and the loss of scholarships stemming back to the Mike Dubose regime. It's not his fault, but in no way was Shula ready to head coach a school like Alabama. But the truth is the Alabama team you see today is 180 version of the Alabama team you saw with Shula. I mean Mike recruited decent (Arenas, K. Jackson, McClain, McElRoy) he just couldn't coach them up.

Care to explain why? I've been thoroughly unimpressed so far.

I guess I'm just glad to see him pursuing top talent. Of course, he needs to actually get it.

It was a Brian Kelly thing. There were those (not me) that thought he wouldn't go hard after blue-chippers because he would be too focused on his "RKG's" (right kind of guys, quoted from his presser).

That was just a thing, Andy. He's not going to show up at ND and pursue nothing but 2-stars. He's still going to go after top guys. He just needs to actually land a few.

Who knows how things will shake out, but I don't think anyone else jumps ship. Hopefully he can add a few more guys at positions of need, including Matt James, who is a must at OT. Letting Barr slip to UCLA and then Leuders go to Stanford was not a great week, but those things happen in a coaching change. We'll see how he does the next couple cycles.

a qb recruit who committed to temple has switched and committed to florida this weekend. i see what snood is saying about how badly it sucks when a guy who is one of the star recruits in a decent or bad program decommits and goes to a big school, where he'll probably be #5 on the depth chart. at temple he'd probably start at qb for 3 years and at florida he'll probably be backup DB or something within 2 years.

It is Senior Bowl week here in Mobile. This game sold out faster than any prior Senior Bowl thanks to Tebow. The local ESPN radio affiliate interviews players all week, and they had Sean Weatherspoon from Missouri on this morning. He was very well spoken and evidently was a wide receiver in high school....He's 6-2 250, so I'm guessing he redefined the "freshman 30 (or 50 in this case)" and bulked up with muscle instead of doritos and donuts....

Michigan State could be getting the Detroit Lions treatment:

mlive.com[/url]"]The classic Spartans gladiator helmet will get a makeover this spring, according to Heather Swain, Assistant Vice President for University Relations, and the school will make an official announcement in April.

..........

The logo redesign is "the result of a two-year collaboration between MSU Athletics and a team of top designers from Nike."

Stupid and pointless, in my opinion. Stop screwing things up just to sell new merchandise, Nike.

so the team of top designers came up with a logo that's almost exactly the same as the one it's replacing? must have been a grueling two years of work on that new one.

At least the differences are more noticeable then the "new" Detroit Lion logo.

sneakypower (or any other Lion fan out there),

What are the general impressions of Joe Barry? He's currently the LB coach at Tampa, but was also the DC in Detroit recently (apparently). He appears to be the leading candidate for DC for the Vols and I'm curious of what people think of him.

Lowest rated (C's) coaching hires by Rivals.

Tennessee and Derek Dooley

Buzz: Vols AD Mike Hamilton is putting his program in the hands of a guy with a good coaching name and a background of working for one of the nation's best coaches. (Hmmm . That sounds familiar. Lane Kiffin and Dooley. Pete Carroll and Nick Saban.) The difference, of course, is that Dooley is much more low-key than his predecessor and isn't likely to rile up opposing coaches or SEC commissioner Mike Slive. Dooley and his staff have a lot of work to do to salvage this recruiting class, but we won't truly know how good they are on the recruiting trail until February 2011 or even February 2012. Dooley certainly will embrace UT traditions more than Kiffin, but will that lead to success? Tennessee has a huge stadium, great tradition and top-shelf facilities. To oversee all that, Hamilton hired a coach who had two losing seasons in three years in the WAC. If nothing else, it certainly is a leap of faith on Hamilton's part.

USC and Lane Kiffin

Buzz: The USC job is one of the nation's four or five best. So why hire Kiffin? It's like giving the keys to a Ferrari Testarossa to a 16-year-old kid who just got his license (and the reference to a 16-year-old kid is somehow apt when it comes to Kiffin, don't you think?). Kiffin and his staff are going to work like madmen on the recruiting trail, and they are going to reel in elite talent. But does Kiffin have what it takes to be an elite head coach? USC is gambling that he does. And it's a big gamble. As with Florida State, this is an elite program that didn't hire a proven head coach.

Ole Miss offensive coordinator and former CFL MVP Kent Austin is leaving to go be head coach at Cornell. WTF? A) I didn't even know Cornell had a football team, and B) Successful SEC coordinators usually don't go down that far for a head coaching job. Eh, whatever.
