Cubs Sign Grabow (2 years, $7.5 Million)

Why are you assuming that his second half struggles have to do with durability and usage? Last year he was a little better in the second half than in the first..... why didn't he fade down the stretch last year?

I don't know that there's anything to Marshall's struggles being attributed to fatigue, but last year through June he had thrown 20 innings for the Cubs. This year through June, he had thrown 54 innings for the Cubs.

In 2008 Marshall threw 32.1 IP for Iowa through June. He didn't go down this year. His workload was the same.

Ah, I didn't remember he got demoted last year. Thanks.

Sullivan says lefty reliever John Grabow wants a three-year deal, and the Cubs "are likely to give it to him." That'd be overpaying, based on last year's market for lefty relievers.

So when was the last time we gave a middle reliever a long term contract like that and it ended well? Think about it Jim.

There's a slight chill in the air. Pumpkins are turning bright orange. Leaves are turning red. Jim Hendry signs a middle reliever to a 3 year deal worth $14 million. These are the signs that fall is upon us.

Grabow top target: Of the Cubs' main free agents, lefty reliever John Grabow is their No. 1 target to re-sign. If they're able to keep Grabow, it's unlikely Hendry will spend a whole lot more money on the bullpen, where youngsters such as Esmailin Caridad and Justin Berg will be given good chances to make the team out of spring training.

Free-agent starter Rich Harden will have to look elsewhere if he's looking for a multiyear deal. The Cubs got 26 starts out of Harden, who has had a history of shoulder problems. It has not been decided whether the Cubs will offer Harden arbitration.

If they sign Grabow to a 3-year deal and let Harden walk without offering arbitration, I won't do anything, but I'll be really annoyed.

I understand Hendry wanting to keep Grabow around, but he needs to exercise some restraint on this one. 3/6MM wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but there is no way that Grabow will come that cheap.

In regard to Harden, if the Cubs are only interested in a one year deal, there is no reason in the world not to offer him arbitration.

Unless there is some sort of unreported injury that only Harden/FO knows about (like Wood last year) it would be one of the dumbest [expletive] moves this franchise has ever made not to offer Harden arbitration. He makes $12 mil. maximum through arbitration, probably something more around $10.5

I think the Cubs are saying that they won't give Harden a multi year deal so that they can offer him arby with less fear that he'd accept it. Harden ought to be able to get a 3 year deal from somebody. A team like Washington for example would be a good place for Harden. Assuming Strasburg debuts 12 days into the season they'd have a pretty decent 1-3 of their rotation to go with what is already a pretty good offense. Harden doesn't win them the division but at least the fans would have some hope.

If it's 3-6, I GUESS I could be persuaded to be allright with it. But, I'm sure Hendry will cave in and do 3-10 or 3-12, which would make this truly stupid. I'm trying to find something decent about this possible move, but having Gorzelanny, Marshall, AND Gaub in tow and for a hell of alot less money, simply makes it very hard. We probably don't have tons of flexibility money-wise as it is and this is just another misappropriation of funds from Hendry.

It absolutely won't be 3-6. My expectations are so low right now, that I'd probably be relieved if it's less than 3/12. I'm expecting 3/14 with bonuses for games finished(a Hendry relief contract staple)

It's almost as though Hendry is a waiter reading off the specials:

"This week we're featuring the vet reliever platter for 3 years / $14 million. The chef recommends our scrappy middle infielders. They're 2 for $4 million."

All other contracts come with a no trade clause for no extra charge.

LOL Washington wouldn't sign him. I look for the cardinals to sign him.

So, according to Levine via MLBTR, we're discussing a 2 year extnesion worth 6.5-7.5 mill WITH incentives. And Grabow wants a 3rd year vesting option as well.

Nothing like having a very limited budget to begin with and blowing it on an average pitcher that we don't even need. :banghead:

Have past failures taught Hendry nothing? I have nothing against Grabow, but hes a 2 year 3-4 mil type of player. Especially when we have Marshall, Gorzo, and Gaub all as potential to take his place..
