So, according to Levine via MLBTR, we're discussing a 2 year extnesion worth 6.5-7.5 mill WITH incentives. And Grabow wants a 3rd year vesting option as well.

Nothing like having a very limited budget to begin with and blowing it on an average pitcher that we don't even need. :banghead:

This move would be absolutely infuriating.

I'm all for resigning Grabow, but Hendry is an idiot if he pays him 2/7MM or more. When was the last bullpen signing/acquisition that actually worked out for the Cubs?

Howry? Eyre? Hawkins? Gregg? Heilman? Remlinger? I see this turning out badly. The only positive thing about signing Grabow, is that if the Cubs are out of it by the deadline, there will always be a team willing to take him off their hands.

Howry was very good for 2 of his 3 years.

Still dont understand Why Hendry is so dumb to offer this guy a contract when he can just offer him arbitration, i doubt anyone would want to sign Grabow if it meant losing Draft Picks. If Hendry signs him to a contract, it just proves how dumb he is. Its kind dumb that he takes this approach on grabow but yet he wont offer Harden Arbitration more than likely.

If he accepts arbitration he could get paid more than $4 million on a one year deal. This should be good news if it means that Hendry can get him closer to 2.5-3 million. Still not worth it probably but that's the going rate for experienced set up men.

I think we'll see a lot of teams not offer arby this year for fear that players will accept since multi year deals will be hard to come by for non elite players.

  • 2 weeks later...
The Cubs are nearing an agreement with lefty John Grabow on a two-year deal, according to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the two sides finalize a deal soon; we heard last week that an agreement wasn't far off.

Levine reports that the deal will be worth nearly $7.5MM over two years. His source says the deal should be completed today. Grabow struck out 7.1 per nine innings and walked 5.0 per nine with the Pirates and Cubs last year for a 3.36 ERA.

Awful. Absolutely awful. Nobody wastes money like our Jim!

I have nothing against Grabow, but wow, just wow.

Yeah, Grabow is a fine guy to have in the bullpen, but yikes. It's not even that the money is crippling (though these kinds of contracts add up), it's the principle of signing a barely above average reliever for millions when there are minor leaguers as likely to be good for 10 percent of the cost.

I'm sure Jim's in job-saving mode though, so he won't trust that.

well, it can't get worse than last offseason right guys?

:beg:

There's a part of me that's hoping for another crappy offseason, followed by a 71-win season, followed by Ricketts firing everyone and starting over with some actual baseball minds.

I know that's messed up, but I can't help it.
