Former Cub farmhand Ricky Nolasco pitched 7 no-hit innings in Sunday's Spring Training game against the Tigers. He faced the minimum of 21 batters over 7 innings, giving up a walk and hitting a batter, both erased on double plays. Two relief pitchers each pitched one hitless inning to complete the no-no.

If it makes anyone feel better, Nolasco has taken a fair amount of time to develop and I really doubt the Cubs could have been that patient with someone in their rotation.

That said, we all wanted more than Juan Pierre in return at the time.

This better not be Dontrelle mach 2. We didn't even get a Clement for Nolasco.

You mean 2 good years before he falls apart and completely falls off the map?

2 good years are better than no good years. Especially when, during those 2 years, we were a contender.

Staff ace Ricky Nolasco will get the Opening Day assignment

But we did get 1 unproductive season out of Juan Pierre in the deal. I hope this doesnt go down in history as another Brock for Bolio type of deal.

I'm guessing that Ricky isn't HOF-bound.

To be fair, Brock shouldn't have been either.

Speaking of HOF bound, to be fair, we did get young Ryne Samberg as a throw in for Ivan DeJesus.

Dallas Green said years later that Sandberg really wasn't a throw-in, he was the player the Cubs were actually interested in. They just billed it as DeJesus for Bowa with Sandberg as a throw-in so Sandberg wouldn't feel pressure the same he might if he thought he was the main target.

Regardless, it was one of the biggest steals of all-time.

If I were Dallas Green, I'd say the same thing.

Haha. Yeah, let's see when he actually made that quote.

My recollection is that he made it after Sandberg showed that he was a good player, and after Bowa retired, but before Sandberg became a superstar. That's a long time ago, so my memory could be a bit off.

I wouldn't mind still having him and having him be a part of the Cubs rotation, but we don't really even him honestly. Starting pitching is one of our strongest points. We have Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Marshall, and if Harden stays healthy most of the year, he'll have a pretty good year. Impressive outing I will say.

Remember there was that short period of time where Sergio Mitre looked like he might actually do something interesting?

Renyel Pinto doesn't look particularly impressive for what he is either.

But remember when we lost Juan Pierre we got a DRAFT PICK that turned into RICH HARDEN along with some other guys. So that means Juan Pierre = Rich Harden. No I don't really believe that.

Agreed. But as much as I hear it from Cards fans that they stole Lou Brock from the Cubs, I like to throw it back at them that they was taken by the Phillies in the Steve Carlton trade. Now don't get me wrong, they got two really good yrs out of Rick Wise (only 2 yrs with the club) that is still two more yrs then what the Cubs got for Lou Brock (a serviceable pitcher, and a former MVP who was in his last yr as a pro). And we stole Ryne Sandberg from the Phillies. It's the circle of life of baseball trades. Each team got a HOF player without giving up much to get them.

As for the comment about Green saying that Sandberg was the actual target and not the throw-in, but they reverse it to keep Sandberg from feeling the pressure to perform, he could be right. Larry Bowa was a horrible offensive player for the Cubs (in his career generally). In his career Bowa never got his BA over .267, or his OBP over .312 or his slg over .339.
