Ok, so this is about the twelve thousandth place I've seen that Gooz is out of options...is everyone in the world wrong?

Guzman was granted another medical exemption and has an option remaining.

I know I've seen that here by the most reputable posters, you, Navin, etc, but its disheartening that even cubs.com disagrees.

It is Muskat, but still...I haven't been able to find any links confirming Guzman was granted an extra option year.

12:32pm: According to a press release from the Cubs, they've sent Wuertz to the A's for minor leaguers Richie Robnett and Justin Sellers. Given all the additions to Oakland's farm system, neither player ranked in their Baseball America top 30 list this year.

In BA's 2008 Handbook, Robnett, a 25 year-old outfielder, ranked 15th among A's prospects. He was said to have "huge raw power," but that hasn't come through in his minor league numbers.

Sellers, a 23 year-old infielder, ranked 14th in the '08 Handbook. He was described as "a solid-average defender who'll hit at the bottom of a lineup."

These guys were decent prospects last year, but it looks like both have fallen a bit. Both don't have very good minor league numbers though, especially Robnett.

Do we know anything about Robnett and Sellers?

Richard Pryer Robnett is a smallish LH OF who has done nothing in the minors since being drafted in the first round.

Sellers is a utility player who stinks.

You got to love a guy named Richard Pryer. It looks like the A's really rushed him through the system. At AA and below he puts up semi-decent numbers, just hasn't figured it out in AAA yet. His power completely disappeared last year, wonder if there was some type of injury that he was recovering from.

Arizona Phil, who is almost always on top of stuff like this, lists Guzman as being out of options.

Doesn't look like much of a rush job. He was 22 in high A, 23 in AA and 24 in AAA. He had a cup of coffee at the higher levels a little early, but he was essentially one year at each level, and age appropriate all along the way. Unfortunately, he hasn't done much of anything since short season ball, with only a good amount of HR a couple years propping up his mediocre rate stats.

Huh. Arizona Phil has been the one saying Guzman would qualify for the medical exemption most last season. It seemed like the Cubs were slow with his rehab from TJS for the purpose of qualifying him for the exemption.

I checked with the Cubs today. Guzman is indeed out of options.

I think Hendry is just making it a point to trade away all the players that NSBB overrates. Pie, Cedeno, Hill and Wuertz. Anyone else left?

Like Wood and DeRosa? Hendry has done a terrible job this offseason. He's single handily destroying this roster.

Another dumb move by Hendry. What a terrible offseason. Leave it to Hendry to find ways of making this team worse.

It's not all that dumb to trade a reliever, when that guy was relagated to last man standing status. You could argue it was dumb for Lou to apparantly give up on him to soon. But I'd rather trade a reliever than sign one to a longterm contract.

With Wuertz gone, there's room for guzman now. Assuming Heilman is the 5th starter, the bullpen could be:

Marshall, Cotts, Gaudin, Vizcaino, Guzman, Gregg, Marmol

Man, that looks like a pretty shaky bullpen.

It looks very similar to last years.

Wood and DeRosa are actually good players.

Last year had the benefit of keeping Marmol as an anytime guy. Going in Howry and Eyre were a bit more dependable than guys like Vizaino and Cotts. And Wuertz is better than a couple of those guys as well. They've lost Wood and Wuertz and added Vizcaino and Gregg. I say that's a downgrade. Plus, last year's bullpen got the surprise addition of Samardzija, which they are very much unlikely to get this year.

Thank you for the clarification! This has been driving me nuts.

So what's the difference between a solid-average defender and an average defender? lol

Athletics acquired RHP Michael Wuertz from the Cubs for outfielder Richie Robnett and infielder Justin Sellers.

The A's get a solid reliever for two prospects they're not likely to miss. Wuertz, 30, will remind A's fans of Kiko Calero with the way he constantly uses his slider. He's managed to stay healthy so far, and he should prove to be pretty useful in the sixth and seventh innings as part of a bullpen also set to include Joey Devine, Brad Ziegler, Russ Springer, Jerry Blevins and Santiago Casilla.

Cubs acquired outfielder Richie Robnett and infielder Justin Sellers from the Athletics for RHP Michael Wuertz.

Robnett, a 2004 first-round pick, hit .240/.330/.351 in 296 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A during a 2008 season in which he missed time due to surgery to remove a benign tumor from his stomach. That he strikes out so much prevents him from hitting for average, and he's no longer a legitimate center fielder after putting on weight through the years. It's doubtful that he'll help the Cubs.

Infielder Justin Sellers was traded from the A's to the Cubs in a three-player deal.

Sellers, who has split time between second base and shortstop, hit .255/.333/.367 as a 22-year-old in Double-A last season. He's a fine defender, but with no standout offensive skill, he seems rather unlikely to have a career as a utilityman.

His negatives far outweigh his positives overall. Sure, without him we wouldn't have Aram, Lee, Harden, etc, but who knows what this team would look like even with someone semi-competent at GM.

Hendry needs to go, and I hope the Ricketts understand that.
