FYI, the GM is in charge of the farm system too.

I understand that but he hires people to run it he doesn't run it for him. Yes a GM overseas it

Step 1: bring the Cubs' farm system back to America.

It's too bad Prior injured his shoulder in the Giles collision because that likely began the end of a certain stellar career.

What's worse is that it appears no one really discovered the extent of the damage to his shoulder for quite some time. Had it been found and repaired sooner, he might be healthy now. Then again, shoulder injuries can be difficult to come back from, so who knows.

I strongly suspect whatever persistent shoulder damage Prior suffered was a result of the repetitive stress of pitching, not from the Giles collision.

Then every pitcher with 300 ip (or so) should be injured too, right?

What kind of junk logic is that?

Not every body is equally susceptible to repetitive stress injuries. Or any type of injury. Some wind up like Clemens, and some like Prior.

And some might say that pitchers that suffer trauma from a collision are susceptible to injuries. Especially since injuries immediately follow said trauma. Just a wild guess, but better than random.

Actually, Pac Rim scouting is one of the Cubs positives. (I know you were making a joke)

I understand that but he hires people to run it he doesn't run it for him. Yes a GM overseas it, and makes most of the final decisions. But most of the time you listen to the minor league scouts, experts that you hired and what they want to do. It's not humanily possible for one person to run a major league team, and everything that goes on with that and put together a great farm. Alot of the time you're only as good as the people you have working under you. So far Hendry has done a poor job hiring people to run the farm for him. He brought in Tim Wilkins, and things appear a little better, but not as good as it should be yet.

That's kind of the definition of management. Its his job to make sure they do their job, or find someone who can.

That said, I don't think scouting is the problem, (I kind of like the toolsy philosophy) but rather, player development. If you scout and draft tools, then your player development better be great.

Yeah, we've had a number of good prospects that never reached their potential:

Pie

C-Patt

Choi

Bobby Hill

Prior

Montanez

Cedeno

and the list goes on and on...

Pie - imo - they waited until he was too far up the ladder to try and shorten his swing.

Cory - ditto, with the added complication of being rushed

Choi - could have been great, but never really recovered from his hand/wrist injury

Hill - hurt his back and was never the same

Prior - hard to say he didn't reach his potential. Just a damn shame that he got abused like that in his first full season

Montanez - didn't have the talent to start with; bad scouting job here

Cedeno - I'm not sure that this isn't what his talent level really is; needs a full-time job in mlb to find out

Corey - forgotten his name so soon? - biggest problem was a torn ACL in the middle of a breakout season.

I'm convinced that was more of a hot streak than a breakout season. C-Patt went through stretches with the Cubs where it looked like he'd finally put something together, but he'd always fall flat on his face. He had that damn loopy swing and a terrible eye for high fastballs and sliders.

Look at Mark Prior's pitch counts for the 2003 season and tell me that's normal. How many times do you send a 23 year old pitcher out there to go over 120 pitches? The last two months are simply brutal, it makes my arm hurt. Yes, having guys throw 130+ pitch outings back to back games is sensible.

But anyway, team not getting better. Yes, I agree with that. I'm not sure why Bradley is still characterized as a big bat. I think he'll be an .815 OPS, 110 game, beat up the lefties and do okay against the righties type of bat, which really doesn't solve any problems.

I prefer to pretend like Mark Prior never existed. He could have really been something special. I'll never forgive Dusty for screwing that up. I'm pretty sure he could save my first born child from a burning building and I'd still hate the man.

Thats because you don't understand how good Bradley is. He's had a 947 and 999 OPS the last two years. Then if you look at his road OPS in 05-06 when he played in horrible hitters parks, you could see how good this guy actually is. He had a 890 road OPS in 06, and 861 OPS in 05. I'd be shocked if he has a OPS below 850 playing half his games in Wrigley.
