I figured Wuertz or Vizcaino would be traded before opening day. With how much money Vizcaino makes, Wuertz was the more likely guy to go. Our bullpen is pretty strong(with adding Heilman), and pretty deep right now, so we could afford to trade Wuertz or Vizcaino. I guess for Wuertz we might get something of decent value in return. While Vizcaino would be a salary dump, with us paying a chunk of his salary.

Give piniella's disdain for Wuertz the Cubs are better off trading him since they should be able to get something useful for him- perhaps a AAA, good glove, can't hit SS that can be called up if Theriot gets hurt.

our bullpen is in serious trouble if Wuertz is "one of our best"

Yea, a career worst 101 ERA+ is pretty awful. The WHIP's not where I'd like it to be, but three straight seasons with ERA+s of 174, 134 and 123 are pretty dang good.

I don't hate trading him, but I have a feeling it's going to be similar to the Hill dump - just get him off the roster and get nothing for him. If we get somebody of real value, I'll be ok with this.

There were rumors at the start of the offseason that Crosby might be available, maybe Wuertz + a minor leaguer or two could get it done, we need a backup SS/3B/2B.

I'm fine with dealing him, but not for another bag of balls.

I'm not calling this offseason a failure, but it's definitely a wash at best. I guess ownership (whoever the hell and whatever the hell that means these days) figured they didn't need to spend much more money to win the Central again.

And they are probably right. And we all know that will be enough to keep the coffers full.

I like Wuertz, and think he's been underutilized - something the Cubs seem to specialize in with pre-arbitration players. They take so long trying to ease guys into roles, that they start option clocks and arbitration clocks early without getting enough benefit from those cheap total team control seasons. But now that he's starting to make the bigger bucks, and before he hits free agency, you might as well deal him for something of value rather than keep him in the limbo section of the bullpen. Letting free agent relievers leave might be the easiest way to steal draft picks, but with the Cubs deciding to just let guys go for no compensation, and their inability to draft and develop, a trade might be the best value.

I'm surprised the Orioles aren't involved. I'm sure they have some left over low-level prospects that have never seen the midwest before.

They'd love to send us another PTBNL, I'm sure.

Ok, so this is about the twelve thousandth place I've seen that Gooz is out of options...is everyone in the world wrong?

Guzman was granted another medical exemption and has an option remaining.

The Cubs continue to get inquiries regarding Michael Wuertz. I expect the team to trade him today or tomorrow, with Oakland the team most likely to send young players back to the Cubs.

The have a kid named Murton whose supposed to be pretty good.

12:32pm: According to a press release from the Cubs, they've sent Wuertz to the A's for minor leaguers Richie Robnett and Justin Sellers.

Anybody know anything about either of these guys? I am assuming neither of them can be that great.

Do we know anything about Robnett and Sellers?

Will Oakland make him their closer this year and trade him next offseason for 5x what they paid to get him? Or stick with him until free agency and take the draft picks.
