Baseball's salary system is a freaking joke. I don't even care if the Yankees don't make the playoffs or win the World Series. Something needs to be done about this. I know I'll get some "look at the Rays" posts. Let me know when the Rays make the playoffs 10 years in a row. Never going to happen unless they open the checkbook to resign all of their guys.

Can't we at least have a fake salary cap/floor. Like $180 million cap and $60 million dollar floor?

Meh, we've seen pretty clearly lately that its not how much money you spend, but how well you've spent it. Just look at the two teams that had to pay luxury taxes this year...the Yanks and the Tigers didn't even come close to making the playoffs. And the two WS teams, the Rays and the Phils superstars were all homegrown.

Ya, but the Phils will eventually have to sign all of those guys. The Rays can win, but they have a few year window, whereas the Yankees have made the playoffs 13 of 14 years and the time they didn't (last year) they won 89 games. With that payroll, it'll be pretty tough to lose 90 games or something like that.

Sure, you can win by drafting well and whatnot, but I really doubt Tampa has a 13 year run of playoffs.

I hope Swisher, Sabathia, Burnett, and Teixeira all get long term injuries

the Yankees are ridiculous, this is the ONLY way they can try to assemble a winning team

as opposed to the completely home-grown cubs and their $25 mil payroll.

I went over to OH to get their reaction but I guess you need an account now. It's kinda like a little kid getting pissed for not getting a toy then locking himself in his bedroom.

different teams build their teams in different ways. i don't understand the vitriol spewed at the Yankees every time they open their check book

for some reason, on espn they just said that the nationals and red sox are the likely destinations for teixeira and that the yankees remain interested

not sure if it was an old report that somehow snuck through

I know it sounds stupid coming from a fan of a team with a high payroll, but isn't baseball getting just a tad unfair? Why would a person in Pittsburgh, Washington or Kansas City care about baseball anymore? The only way they stand a chance is to lose for a decade and stockpile draft picks. They then have a two maybe three year window before all that talent gets signed by high revenue teams and they have to spend another decade losing.

Keep in mind how much money they had coming off the books this year...

Giambi - $21 mil

Abreu - $16 mil

Pettitte - $16 mil

Mussina - $11 mil

Pavano - $11 mil

Their annual payroll might actually go down for 2009.

Oh, and somebody with an account at Orioles Hangout needs to copy and paste some of the more hilarious reactions in here.

I don't know about "getting" unfair. The Yankees have been the dominant franchise throughout history. You have teams like Florida who can win twice in a decade. Oakland was a great team for several years. Tampa is good and has more than 2-3 year window. Teams get to keep guys for dirt cheap for 3 years, then they get 3 more years at below market value. The problem with baseball is so many teams are run stupidly.

When the Yankees won in the late 90's, how many of their players were home-grown? Weren't a bunch of them like Williams, Jeter, Posada? I am still unconvinced that the Yankees can win by buying a WS. Yes some teams have done it (Florida in the mid 90's), but New York seems to get the raw end of the deal with injuries players with steroid histories. Burnett has a history of injuries. Sabbathia's arm might fall of. Tampa Bay isn't going anywhere.

I just know that if I was fan of a team like the Pirates, baseball would be dead to me. It's hard to get emotionally invested in a team that stands no chance year in and year out. I'm surprised they even pull in enough revenue to keep the team going at this point.

Did the Pirates get anything out of the luxury tax?

That's because they are a poorly run team. The Pirates are in a division with no dominant team. There's no reason why they couldn't contend for 3-5 of every 10 years, other than their own incompetence.

Nobody can buy a WS. You can buy a chance at the WS. The Yankees didn't get any sort of raw deal, they spent money and their record has reflected that sort of committment to winning.

By the way, OH is back open without registration. It's even more enjoyable than I had hoped for. :)

Yep, they are all shocked that their insiders were incorrect. Hilarious.

Go Red Sox!

I hate the Red Sox just as much as the Yankees.

Oh crap, I just realized that the backlash to all these signings will be 800,000 more annoying Red Sox bandwagoners declaring them "giant-killers" and rooting for them over the Yankees

crap.

The thing is that the Red Sox put up, what 170 million for Texeira too. The Red Sox have their own evil empire too.
