Go Red Sox!

I hate the Red Sox just as much as the Yankees.

Oh crap, I just realized that the backlash to all these signings will be 800,000 more annoying Red Sox bandwagoners declaring them "giant-killers" and rooting for them over the Yankees

crap.

The thing is that the Red Sox put up, what 170 million for Texeira too. The Red Sox have their own evil empire too.

And being a Rays fan is even more trendy-annoying.

But there's a fourth team that can challenge for a playoff spot in that division. The Blue Jays.

Don't act like if you didn't have the money you wouldn't spend it to get the players you wanted to win with. Steinbrenner has money and he's a fan who wants to win now, so he's doing all he can to win.

By the way, OH is back open without registration. It's even more enjoyable than I had hoped for. :)

Yep, they are all shocked that their insiders were incorrect. Hilarious.

I'm not sure what is more pathetic: people who hang on every word an "insider" has to write on a message board, or people on a completely unrelated message board getting off every single time those "insiders" are wrong.

It's not that I enjoy the "insiders" being wrong. I simply got annoyed by people over there so drastically overvaluing their prospects while bashing ours. The last 2 offseasons have left me more than a little jaded when it comes to the Orioles.

You mean like when they thought they could get Chase Headley for Olson?

And now the Brewers only get a second round pick for Sabathia. Fantastic. :banghead:

Normally I don't care much about AL teams, but this is pretty ridiculous. The best part is that they're getting a break on revenue sharing because of their new stadium.

Meh, whatever. They shed a ton of payroll by letting Abreu, Giambi and Pavano walk, plus Mussina retired and to date Pettite has not been retained. If you have it, you might as well spend it.

Exactly. That's $75 mil right there... they don't need to hike their payroll at all to afford Sabathia, Burnett, and Teixeira.

All this talk about the Yankees ruining baseball by spending this money is absurd when their payroll still might go down.

this is true, but the yankees now have the 4 highest paid players in baseball. some other teams were starting to challenge them, but now they're taking off into their own stratosphere again.

their payroll is currently lower than last year.

there's also the fact that last year's team included some contracts that were very heavily back-loaded (giambi). you shed those and take on new contracts that you can backload (sabathia is only making something like $14M this year, then it jumps to like $23M in 2010) and you've got the illusion of a team that has shed salary. if you take the average annual value of each player's contract, i promise you that 2009's team will be more highly paid.

and again, so what?

They won't be unbeatable. But the AL East will very likely feature 4 of the best 5 teams in the AL and be awesome to watch.

I assume your 4th is the Jays...Marcum will be out the entire season, McGowan is coming off rotator surgery, and Litsch is going to regress significantly. Their rotation is pretty effed until 2010. They are a pitching and defense team who is going to have pretty unspectacular pitching next year.

Posted
I could be wrong, but don't the Brewers now lose the Yankees first round pick? What do they get now?

Their second-round pick, I believe.

And the Jays get a 3rd rounder for Burnett.

Which is why they should trade Halladay to us!

Now would be the time to pounce on Swisher...the bat of Ibanez(not that thats great), the defense of Bradley, the health of Abreu, and the age of Dunn...ohh yeah, and at half the price.

so your point may or may not be technically right, but in practice is pretty much completely wrong. and as for my point, i like competitive balance, and one team having the four highest paid players in the game is not competitive balance.
