I want the Nationals to miss out on him because I have a delusional fantasy that they'll be so desperate to make a splash they'll take on a large portion of Soriano's contract to get him back.

The OH insiders hinted 2 days ago that Teixera would possibly be attending the Ravens/Steelers game, and now ESPN has reported he will be a guest of Angelos at the game this morning.

Hm...

Spending all their money in all the wrong places. He'll be a big boost to their offense, but Mark Teixeira won't fix their atrocious pitching

Just for fun I looked it up to see how right you were. The Orioles were 11th in runs scored this year, but 29th in pitching. Wow what questionable decisions.

I know, right? There's big names on the FA pitching market that would be significant upgrades to their rotation even if they got the 3rd or 4th best one available, and they're putting all their eggs into a basket that, while it could always use improvement, won't help them win games. We're looking at Randy Johnson to effectively be our #5 starter, and he'd probably be the #1 or #2 on Baltimore's staff. They are such a poorly run organization. And Angelos is clearly behind the Teixeira bandwagon to get him in Baltimore. Signing Teixeira would never be a bad thing if you take cost out of the equation, but good God their pitching needs severe help

I agree in principle. But, Baltimore is in a pretty tough environment to land special FA pitchers. If you are CC Sabathia, and Baltimore, Boston and NYY are all offering you identical packages to be in their rotation, in what order do you sign with those 3 teams?

Since every scenario will likely involve Boston and the Yanks first or second, how much more can Baltimore offer above Boston or NYY to push them to the top of your list?

Boston and NYY are going to get the leg up simply because they are in pennant races year in and year out. Couple that in with pitching against them for several of your starts, and the appeal for Baltimore is even less.

So they shouldn't even try? I haven't heard them linked to any sort of pitching. I'm not talking CC or Sheets or something. Why not get involved with Lowe or someone like that. I'm pretty sure the heart of their system is hitters too.

We don't know if they've tried or not.

They were rumored after Burnett for a while.

8 of their top 11 prospects are pitchers, and they have several other decent prospects who have already lost their prospect status because they've been forced into action on the major league level. Baltimore has a ton of options for arms in the next couple years, and given when they're likely to contend (2010 at the earliest) it doesn't make sense to sign a top pitcher right now.

Everything you just said applies equally to hitters and pitchers.

The "in" they have with Tex that could theoretically tilt the playing field in their favor is the hometown thing.

if you guys think the roberts/peavy ordeals were bad on here, you should check out OH. they've been obsessing over teixeira for like 2 years waiting for this offseason. they're all going crazy. they've got "insiders" being all secretive, roy firestone stirring the pot, people getting texts from freidns saying they saw mark teixeira at the ravens game, etc. it's pretty entertaining. if tex signs somewhere else the first thing i'm going to do is check out OH

I actually agree with the O's decision to go after Teixeira. They've got some quality arms in the system coming up in the next few years, or already there and just trying to get the kinks worked out.

Matsuz, Arrieta, Hernandez, Erbe, Spoone, Olson, Liz, Penn, Patton, and a handful of others... in 2-3 years, I don't see them having much trouble putting together at least an average rotation for dirt cheap.

Their problem is that they are old and washed up on the field right now, and their retreads like Huff and Mora wont be able to perform decently when the pitching is finally ready. But Teixeira, Wieters, Markakis, and Jones might make for a very solid core when that pitching is finally ready.

I don't care what your situation is, I don't think you shouldn't be paying 180-200 million for Mark Teixiera

Maybe them going hard after MT would make it easier to trade some of their other players (Markakis, Mora, Roberts) in order to get young pitching.

Think of the Angelos/BR fiasco last winter. Could you imagine how ugly talks for Markakis would get? You'd have to agree to literally let the O's rape the entire organization.

Angelos needs to quit acting like every "fan favorite" is Cal Ripken, Jr. Yes, your franchise was spoiled by the guy, we get it, but Markakis/Roberts/Whoever isn't Ripken.

I had to chuckle at this. The Nats seem to have a bigger infatuation with RH hitting outfielders than Jim Hendry's infatuation with guys who can play 2b.

The Boston Herald speculates that the Red Sox will likely offer Mark Teixeira an "eight-year contract worth somewhere between $145 and $175 million, possibly more."

Angels general manager Tony Reagins has confirmed that the Angels offered Teixeira an eight-year deal and both the Nationals and Orioles have reportedly made proposals in excess of $150 million.

Talk about a luxury. The Red Sox don't need Teixeira. Not unless they plan on moving Lowell (or benching him). Youkilis was a Top 3 first baseman last year in the AL. Unless Ortiz is projected to miss significant time on the DL, why would they even need Teixeira?

Lowell is 35 and was pretty abysmal for a corner IF offensively last year.

What does need have to do with anything? They want to field the best team they can. Adding a guy like Teixeira would improve their chances. Lowell isn't all that good and he's older. He and Drew are good bets to miss plenty of time. They already lost Manny last year and Ortiz is probably in decline.

This is something you do when you try and build a 95-win team every year.

I'd like to see if Drew becomes available in trade.

I understand that, but is paying one guy upwards of $160 million the best option to fix that? Wouldn't there be other viable alternatives to signing the biggest FA on the market?

There's a finite number of quality options. If a team has the room in the budget I don't see the problem. Boston has consistently gone after top tier talent and made it work within their budget while succeeding at a very high level. Why do people have a problem with that?

That sort of thing is anathema to the Chicago Cubs organization and its fans.
