That doesn't sound like Jim Hendry at all.

If Hendry has said Wood is done in Chicago, it's likely because of his contract demands.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the Cubs and Wood part ways. Kerry may be seeing a 3-5 year deal. I can see why the Cubs would be reluctant to give that to him. I'd love to see Wood remain a part of the Cubs, but not at any cost. It has to be reasonable.

Pitcher Kerry Wood and the Cubs will part ways after 14 years with the organization, general manager Jim Hendry said today.

Wood, who came up in the Cubs organization as one of the team's most heralded prospects ever, had the longest tenure of any Cubs player on the 2008 roster.

Earlier today, the Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg from Florida on Thursday to plug a hole in the bullpen, sending Double-A prospect Jose Ceda to the Marlins.

Whether Gregg will be a closer, as he was in Florida, or a set-up man depends on if Carlos Marmol is ready to step into a more significant role.

Either way, the Cubs are trying to maintain their options as they head into the free agent season, which officially kicks off on Friday, when teams can makes offers to free agents outside their organization.

I was really high on Ceda as well, but I think he slipped this year posting a 4-3 record, 9 saves and 3.83 ERA at A and AA, which isn't great.

Those numbers are not very valuable at the major league level. Those numbers are absolutely horrible to use in evaluating prospects. You're dealing with significantly worse defenses, a lot more restraints on pitchers (smaller pitch counts, how many pitches a guy can and cannot throw in an outing, the kinds of pitches a guy is allowed to throw in a outing, etc.), smaller parks, worse offenses, and worse bullpens.

No one will argue if you're worried about the number of walks and flyballs he gives up. But the numbers you mentioned should be ignored for all minor league pitchers.

Okay, but that still doesn't explain why hendry is trading decent prospects for crappy and expensive relievers.

I'm willing to give this move a chance. I agree Ceda should probably be worth more, but we don't really know his value around the league. Plenty of teams could have a bunch of question marks about him and not be that high on him. As much as were bashing Kevin Gregg, a guy who's saved 29 and 32 games the last two years with around a 3.50s era, that doesn't make much money also has pretty good value. So I don't think this trade is as bad as some on this board think it is. Because we don't really know how much value a guy like Ceda has.

Explain to me how Kevin Gregg is better than Michael Wuertz.

Who knows if Kevin Gregg is or not, I have only seen him pitch against the Cubs and he has looked pretty good most of the time. But the fact that Gregg has these numbers after 68 and 84 innings. While Wuertz has only pitched in 40 and 44 two of the last three years(because he's been so inconsistent), gives Gregg the heads up IMO. All I'm saying is I'm not going to freak out about this trade, and gonna see how it turns out. I just feel if Hendry could only get a average closer for Ceda, his value around the league must not be what we thought it was.

Because I doubt Hendry would be that desperate to get Gregg at this point of the offseason. Just because Ceda is valueable to us, and is one of our top five prospects, doesn't make him have more value around the league. For all we know Gregg could pitch closer to what he did in 07, and we could end up trading him for a better package next offseason, while Ceda might never be a good/decent Major Leaguer. So I'm not heartbroken or really mad about this trade, yes right now it appears like we gave up too much, but only time will tell if thats true or not.

That makes me sad.

This had better be a payroll move, and not because we don't think Kerry can get it done anymore. He can stay healthy in the pen not throwing as many pitches.

God dammnit... the Peavy news is probably all BS, Wood won't be back... ah, yes, I was forgetting what it was like to get kicked in the nuts by the Cubs. Thanks, guys.

Minor league relief pitchers rarely have trade value. #4 Cubs prospect or not, I don't see him as being a deal breaker in any potential trade.

Jesse Rogers is a sensationalist hack.

That phrase has been thrown around quite often lately. Sadly, I think it's quite applicable to most sports writers out there today.

At least we have Gregg replacing Wood's production.

This is going to piss me off so much more when we give Dempster 4 years 55 million

That's the thing. Wood has been a great pitcher whenever he's been healthy. The bullpen role seems to suit him well. I can understand if he is now looking for, and likely to get 4 years somewhere. But choosing Dempster over Wood seems so odd given Dempster's own uneven track record, not to mention his own surgery.

That used to be the case, but things have really been shifting around in the past few years for whatever reason. When you look at the MLB draft and see the number of college relievers who have been selected in the first and second rounds and given 7 figure bonuses, it becomes clear that teams are placing more value on relief pitchers. You see a lot of top organizations doing this, to boot.

I'd rather have an ace than a shut-down closer in my system, but both are valuable commodities in the trade market.
