"You can't wear 42 anymore," Bradley said of the number officially retired by Major League Baseball in honor of Jackie Robinson. "I've always said, 21 is half of 42. If I could be half the player, half the person Jackie Robinson was, then I will have been a success."

Nice.

Also, a little contract insight:

The contract will pay Bradley $5 million the first year, plus half of a $4 million signing bonus -- the other half will be paid in 2010. It also includes incentives related to games played.

This is a good contract for the current economic state, but I wonder if Jim realizes that these backloaded contracts will kill him at some point.

Am I understanding these quotes right?

09: $7m (incl. $2m bonus)

10: $17m (incl. $2m bonus)

11: $10m

Doesn't look right, but I can't find any more explanations, or any clarity on the third (option) year, money-wise.

Since 7 plus 17 plus 10 doesn't equal 30, probably not.

I imagine it's something like:

2009: 5+2

2010: 9+2

2011: 12

'09 and '10 equals $20m (not including signing bonus, which I admittedly don't understand).

I assumed the 30 must be the sum of all three years, not including a bonus?

If Cot's doesn't have it yet, then it's not public yet. That place can tell me how much Joe Dillon made as a member of the Yomiuri Giants in 2006.

I'm still curious to see the offical contract details. But it's good to see that Bradley will only cost 7m towards next year payroll. Right now after trading Marquis/DeRosa, and adding Miles/Bradley. I see our payroll at around 133.5m. Adding Gregg salary to that at around 4.5-5m. Puts our payroll at around 138m next year. If we keep Wuertz/Cedeno it would put us at 140m or so. Trading Wuertz, Pie, Cedeno could take 2.5m or so off the books. We also could try to trade Vizcaino even if we have to eat 1.5m or so of his salary. My point is if we can get the payroll at around 148m or so next year we can fit Peavy in the budget.

The bonus is part of the $30. The reason it's typically mentioned separately is because it's a lump sum paid to the player up front (in Bradley's case, probably so he can buy himself a new lid).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Hendry have some heart problems in the past?
I believe he had an angioplasty a couple of years ago. I remember reports of him making phone calls from the hospital.

If not, the Cubs are protected in the final year of the deal. The contract pays $5 million in base salary in 2009 and $9 million in 2010 -- with a $4 million signing bonus split over the two seasons -- with $12 million due in 2011. But a multilayered set of clauses turns the final year into a team option (with a $2 million buyout) if Bradley's health becomes a serious problem this season.

So break down is

7m in 2009(including 2m signing bonus)

11m in 2010(including 2m signing bonus)

12m in 2011(with 2m buyout if Bradley health is a serious problem)

So if Bradley is hurt a ton the next two years, we're risking 2y at 20m.

Can't really argue with that. Nice work, Jimbo.

I'm still wondering what qualifies as missing significant time. Does he have to play 140 games this year to prevent year 3 to be an option? Is it 400 PA?

Anyway, I like the terms and structure of the contract, and I like what Bradley has said.

Is he wearing a really gaudy bracelet and a rubber band?

Yeah, saw that too. Probably a ref to T.I.'s song "Rubber Band Man" which encourages people to wear a rubber band after becoming wealthy to remind them of the struggle.

The organist must use that as his batting song.

There's some opinion out there that backloaded contracts aren't that bad because the money isn't worth as much 3 years down the road, etc. I'm sure there are smarter posters that could explain that better.

Well yeah that's basic finance, but even if there is a lesser future value, $12 million in '11 is still more than $7 million in '09

I watched the conference a bit when I got home last night..It made me like Bradley ten times more after he said he wanted to be here since day one and it's a blessing to be a Chicago Cub..He seemed really calm and wants to put the past behind him and start a new chapter here..I never really got a good look at him batting, but man he really puts some muscle in it and crushes it..Lets hope for a really good and healthy year for him. I wish him the best.

If we're only paying Bradley $7 million this year, and we saved $6 (roughly) from the Marquis trade, why did we trade DeRosa?

He was going to be off the books next year anyway.

I'm not trying to dredge up that argument again, I'm just curious why the need was there if Bradley's not being paid $10 mil this year.
