man, signing gathright made no sense.

He's gonna get a lucky shallow OF blooper to win a game at some point, and you're gonna hear about his guts, and grit, and how he plays the game the right way.

Wrong. Black guys can't be gritty. Don't you know the rules?

Unless they are Juan Pierre.

Oh...beaten by one post. That's gotta be disappointing.... ;)

I dunno. How else has Juan Pierre built a career if not for his grit? I think this rule needs to be challenged. Surely Neifi was gritty. Tony Womack.

I never thought they were characterized as gritty. Juan was given the "speed doesn't slump" monikor, Neifi was a versatile sure-handed professional hitter (yes, I read that he was a professional hitter). And Womack was just Tony Womack.

Silly argument of course, but doing a google search for all three with the word "gritty" included turns up hits for all 3 where gritty was used in reference to them (admittedly, I found only one direct usage of it for Neifi and Womack each).

If Tony Womack was white, he'd still be around to "give a veteran presence" like Craig Counsell.

Are there any good players labeled as "gritty"?

Lou's gone about 8 games with the Cubs with only 1 backup IF. I don't think he's gonna go an entire season.

I've said it 100 times and I'll quote you for the 101st. I cannot see the Cubs going into the season with only one guy capable of backing up 3rd, SS and 2B. I see no way Hoff makes this team, unless Gathwright is traded or they grow the balls to go with a 6 man bullpen.

We have a lot of choices for the seventh reliever spot who have options remaining. Hoffpauir also has options remaining. It would be nice if they switched back and forth between seventh reliever and sixth bench guy depending upon need (workload on the remainder of the bullpen, etc.).

It would be nice, but with the required 10-day (or is it 14?) after the demotion, it's hard to do that with a reliever and a position player. It's easier with 3 relievers.

So anyone know what time Bradley's physical was scheduled for today?

He probably had it already, the press conference to introduce him is at 2:30 CT.

Reed Johnson, Joey Gathright, Micah Hoffpauir

Reed is worthwhile. The other two leave enough to be desired that they shouldn't be considered viable options for a supposed championship contender to fill in 40 games missed by one of its 3-4-5 hitters.

Miles can play some OF too, right?

yes. in the same sense that I could be a stripper

Aaron Miles was paid to play the OF in 6 games last season.

How many times were you paid to strip last year?

10 days. They could pull it off if they had a second worthwhile optionable position player.

Are you sure it's at 2:30 CT? The article says 3:30. Is it on now?

i'm pretty that any info on the physical will take longer to come out than this afternoon. it's not like you give the guy the full work-through and then spend 2 minutes analyzing the MRIs and what not.

No, one of the articles posted above says he passed it already.

ah ok.

knowing the cubs they probably made him do a few jumping jacks and declared him good to go.

From what I remember, I'm pretty sure he had been examined by Cubs doctors weeks ago.

Probably had to so some pushups too.

Given Bradley's fragility, jumping jacks are a pretty dangerous activity for him.
