Posting a fake rumor would also be a pretty good way to virally get traffic to a blog.

Just saying.

I hope it's true, though.

Dolan used to write a 7-10 paragraph blog entry every day. Now he'll churn out 3 paragraphs a week. He is a fading star in the Cubs blog world, so I guess this would be a good way to get back into the mix.

The Jake Peavy to the Cubs rumors will not die, and today they took a turn for the interesting.

A source within the Padres organization claims that it’s “basically a done deal” (whatever basically means) that Peavy is headed to Chicago, and that the Cubs will send back Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ryan Theriot.

I have no idea the source.

Getting Peavy and getting rid of Theriot would make my offseason.

Andy Dolan is very, very dumb.

If he's reporting what he was told by whoever this source may be, what would his intelligence have at all to do with it?

Believing a non-source would indicate he's very very dumb.

True.

Getting Peavy on the cheap and getting rid of Theriot. :)

God, I hate the offseason.

I actually love this part of it.

January till mid February sucks, though.

So does the two weeks or so of ST after they report and before the exhibition games... and then the 3-4 weeks after the first couple exhibition games.

Looking at the Cubs lineup, there are very few positions that they have any flexibility with in order to get a left-handed hitter in the lineup. Shortstop, 2B, and RF are the only positions seemingly available. (The Cubs can't and wouldn't move Soto without a public outcry). The rest of the positions have no-trade clauses (ARam, DLee, Sori, and Fuku). We also need a lefty/switch-hitter to become a leadoff man, so getting a Furcal would make a lot of sense (but getting back a K. Greene wouldn't.). I could imagine a lineup looking somewhat like this for next year:

1 SS Furcal

2 CF R. Johnson

3 1B Lee

4 3B Ramirez

5 RF A. Dunn/B. Abreu/R. Ibanez

6 LF Soriano

7 2B DeRosa/Fontenot

8 C Soto

Jake Peavy - S - SD - Nov. 11 - 1:56 pm et

The Braves would like to have the Jake Peavy situation resolved by the time the free agent market opens on Friday.

It's believed that Atlanta and San Diego have agreed on the two main pieces the Padres would get back: Yunel Escobar and Gorkys Hernandez. They're also supposed to get a young pitcher, possibly Charlie Morton, as a third player, but it looks like they want one more to perhaps seal the deal. No surprise teams have emerged, so it still looks like it's down to the Braves and Cubs for Peavy. Nov. 11 - 1:56 pm et

Don't forget CF. Are there any LH CF options out there besides the one we already have in house?

Oops - I meant to include Fukudome as an option at CF.

I kid, I kid.

My #1 was Ryan Sweeney, but after trading Gonzalez, I'm betting the A's keep Sweeney. I'd have to look back through my cheap lefty OFs thread.

Well here is a tidbit towards the SS angle from XM.

De Rosa was on last week and said of all the positions he liked he would prefer to be on the left side of the infield. Then he went on to talk about how he came up as a SS and had to learn other things other then SS becuase of Renteria.

I would imagine that DeRosa would get a shot at SS before Fontenot. I actually like the idea of a DeRosa/Fontenot middle infield. DeRo's arm is certainly strong enough and his rnage at 2nd was that bad up the middle so he can move to his left theorically just fine.

Just a backup thought to Theriot going.

If the deal is basically done, then why isn't it done? Plus if a deal is this close to done, why hasn't it been leaked to Levine, Olney,Heyman, Gammons, or Rosenthal by now? I'm not really buying this information, but will take it FWIW. When taking in info like this if a deal isn't done in the next 24 hours, I basically take it as BS.

Edmonds, Endy Chavez, Mark Kotsay, and Kenny Lofton are the ones that would cost only a little in terms of $ or in Chavez's case talent.

I forgot about DeRo at SS. He's as good at the position as Theriot was, at least.

Andy 10 The source of this rumor reports to Kevin Towers directly. Nope, not Masur or Vasgersian.

Andy 17 I like the extra o. I’m keeping it.

[expletive], I don’t know if this is going to happen. I’m just passing it along. The source has worked for the Padres for years and said that when the meeting he was in last night ended everybody left the meeting with the idea that it was going to be Felix, Theriot and Marshall for Peavy.

Where it goes from there we’ll just have to see.

I'm not saying I at all believe that it is, but there could be a few reasons when deals are reported as "basically done"

Haggling over a few throw ins, needing players with NT privileges to give consent, stuff like that...

I don't believe it, though...not for that package.
