It's good to know Peavy has replace Brian Roberts as this yrs "all talk, no action" move of the offseason.

Any dibs as to who will be next yr's "will they or won't they" for the Cubs?

Peavy to the Cubs talk has really only been hot for a week or so, it still has a few months to get on the Brian Roberts level. The weird thing about the Brian Roberts stuff. I didn't even really want him all that bad. It just got to the point were It felt like he was a Cub already, after months of rumors saying that it should happen any day. So I just wanted the deal done, and him to be offically on the team already, or the trade talks done. Peavy on the other hand is a pitcher who I really want. So I don't want this to end unless he ends up on the Cubs.

Then again it start out slowly last yr. And technically the Cubs don't need Peavy, just like the Cubs didn't need Roberts last yr.

At this point I would almost rather have Jake Peavy be traded to the Braves later today than have him get traded to the Cubs two days before pitchers and catchers report solely so we don't have to go through three more months of rumors of a deal being close.

I agree. Peavy would be nice, but before he went on the block, and we were close, we were happy with the rotation as long as we could re sign Dempster. We seem to be losing sight of what we really need, which is a lefty bat for the heart of the order.

Yea that's what I said back on like page 35 or so... but after thinking more about it... Can you imagine Zambrano, Harden, Peavy, Lilly, Dempster... or whatever the order they wanted to put them whether they would split up righties or not. That is by far one of the best rotations in baseball we've seen in a LONG time.

Anyone see this non-update update from Rosenthal?

The Braves are frustrated with the progress on the Jake Peavy talks, and will explore other options (especially once the free agent market opens Friday). Rosenthal says the Padres sent revised proposals to the Cubs and Braves yesterday, but those teams intend to stick with their offers. Will the Padres crack and make a deal before Friday?

I didn't see that one but I did find this similar one from Rosenthal-

Braves to Padres: "Let's go"

The Braves are getting fed up.

After trying for more than a month to acquire Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, the team is beginning to explore other options, major-league sources say.

The Braves would still take Peavy, mind you. But they have informed the Padres that they could shift course rapidly once the free-agent market opens on Friday.

The Padres regrouped Monday and sent revised proposals to both the Braves and Cubs, according to one source. Officials from both teams, however, insist that their offers are not likely to change.

The party line from the Padres is that they are in no hurry to move Peavy and will keep him if they do not receive the right combination of players.

Others, however, speculate that the Padres' front office might be in disarray — speculation that only figures to gain momentum now that the team is parting with Hoffman.

Owner John Moores is going through a divorce and could sell the club. Club president Sandy Alderson says the payroll could be as low as $40 million. The front office, frequently described as "top heavy," includes a wide range of opinions.

Then again, in the case of Peavy, the Padres might simply be waiting to the last possible moment to make the best possible deal.

The risk in that strategy is that it might cost them the players the Braves are willing to trade for Peavy — shortstop Yunel Escobar, either right-hander Charlie Morton or left-hander Jo Jo Reyes and either center fielder Gorkys Hernandez or Jordan Schaefer.

The Cubs might be offering a more established pitcher, left-hander Sean Marshall and perhaps a top prospect of their own, Class A third baseman Josh Vitters. But Escobar likely is the best player in either team's proposal, and the Cubs cannot give the Padres a center fielder as promising as Hernandez or Schaefer.

Still, the Padres obviously are intrigued by the Cubs' package; otherwise, they already would have traded Peavy to the Braves.

Arghhh just get this done..Im on here like every 2 minutes at work for updates..The owner is unloading since he needs money for his divorce..Give the Marshall,Pie,Vitters, whoever to get it done..This was just on Roto too..

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have offered Ryan Dempster a four-year, $50 million contract.

However, the newspaper calls $50 million "a number he should be able to beat on the open market" and speculates that Dempster won't re-sign quickly even if he does return to Chicago.

It's things like this, and the Trib report, that make me think they'll have a rotation of Harden, Z, Lilly, Marquis and Marshall once the season starts. It's not like that rotation is horrible, but w/ Peavy and Dempster it could be as dominant as we've seen in a long time.

Will everyone be alright with giving up Vitters?

It's inevitable, you know we had to actually be offering SOMEONE really attractive for the Padres to take us serious.

This sort of (partially) coincides with what Donnie D was saying about the Braves.

People are overlooking that he said his source will be a potential one for 3 more days, so i'm assuming it's a player (Demp?).

Does management disclose that information with players that aren't involved?

Is Escobar that good? I look at his numbers and they don't look that great.

Remember what position he plays.

Escobar: .288/.366/.401/.766

Theriot: .307 .387 .359 .745

Personally, I think Escobar is being overrated just a little bit in talks with the Padres. I mean he is a solid player with potential to get better, but the only thing he has on Theriot is he he hits for slightly more power. So while Escobar might be the best known player in the deal, IDK if I would call him (I prolly would be it wouldn't be without thought) the best talent being offer between the Cubs and the Braves.

Even with Escobar in the deal IDK if there deal is more attract then the Cubs unless it included Tommy Hanson.

Olney says the Cubs and padres are trying to get a 3rd team involved-

Cubs jump into Peavy trade talks, eye three-team deal

By Buster Olney

ESPN The Magazine

The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres continue to make progress in trade negotiations around pitcher Jake Peavy, but at the same time, San Diego is talking with the Chicago Cubs about the All-Star -- with the Padres and Chicago engaging a third team as part of their proposals.

Peavy

Some sources believe that a trade of Peavy, while not imminent, is inevitable, and could occur prior to Thanksgiving. The Padres are in the midst of a significant payroll cut: If San Diego -- which withdrew a contract offer to closer Trevor Hoffman on Monday night -- eventually trades both Peavy and Brian Giles, as expected, then the team's 2009 payroll will be about half of what it was in 2008.

The Braves and Padres have settled on two pieces of the package that Atlanta would send to San Diego -- shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Braves likely would include one of two young pitchers, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. The two sides are at odds over the other pieces in the deal; the Padres are known to have interest in young pitcher Jeffrey Locke.

The Cubs and Padres have talked about a deal built around Josh Vitters, the Cubs' top pick from 2007. But unlike the Braves, Chicago is not steeped in pitching, and so the Padres and Cubs are in the process of drawing in a third team into their talks, and that third team would be the side that would flip the pitching necessary to San Diego, in order to make the deal work for the Padres.

Peavy, 27, won the 2007 Cy Young Award, and went 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 2008. He is signed through 2013, and currently, he has a full no-trade clause and has the right to veto any proposal. The Braves and Cubs are among the teams that he would consider, as he has indicated to the Padres.

During the process of considering possible deals for Peavy, the Padres have talked with numerous teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros and New York Yankees.

So Olney and Rosenthal just reported 2 very different stories. Which is more reliable (or least unreliable) of those 2?

So Peavy to Cubs, Cubs prospects to 3rd team, and pitching prospects from 3rd team to Padres?

Any speculation on who this 3rd team might be? I hope we can work a deal out before the Pads get frustrated and send him to Atlanta.

Posted

So Rosenthal says the talks have reached a standstill and the Braves are getting pissed...Olney says talks "continue to make progress". Rosenthal says the Pads put in new proposals to each team but neither changed their offer..... Olney says they Cubs and Pads are trying to involve a 3rd team.

This is why I have a hard time believing any of these guys. At least one of them is obviously very wrong right now.

I can't speak for "everyone", but I'm perfectly fine with it.

I know I would be cool with it.

Why trade Vitters in a deal for a player the Cubs would like to have but don't really need as much as different areas of the club? Since Vitters is really the only Grade B or higher prospect left, perhaps hanging onto him would be prudent.

Prolly, if the Cubs were rebuilding, which they are not. Vitters is the type or prospect you hold onto if you think he's the future, or if a superstar player/pitcher becomes available. Seeing as Peavy is one of the few players I would trade Vitters for I would say it would worth dealing Vitters. Especially considering that Peavy has what 3-4 yrs left on his contract. Well worth the only Grade B or higher prospect left i the org.

In most cases, I'd agree, but we're talking about arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball. You don't balk at one of the very best pitchers in the league because of a prospect that has yet to play at high A. Trading Vitters would smart, but for Peavy, I'd get over it very quickly. If anything, Marshall, Pie, and Vitters for Peavy is highway robbery on our part when you look at it. The only reason we have a chance to pull this off is a) Peavy's NTC and his preference for the NL, and b) Moore's divorce and the Padre's ongoing salary dump.
