Look folks I'm not "thin skinned" when it comes to people expressing their opinions about Sean. I am Sean's biggest fan along with critic and I have no problem telling him what I think about any of his performances. All I wanted to do was reply about the comment about "lots of balls hit to the track". This gentleman expressed his views and I just came back and stated that with the wind blowing out on friday that Sean at least kept them in the park. This person apologized and its over and we can agree to disagree. As I have said many times before Sean has had lots worse stated about him and I will tell you that he will read this but he just uses all this negative talk for motivation. \:D/

Longtime reader of NSBB, few and far between poster. Just want to say your kid has some good stuff. I am so excited to watch him pitch at wrigley for years to come. Especially with no Dusty.

Thanks for the talent in Sean, i'm excited to watch him as a Cub for a long time. Only thing, most cub fans don't want to be referred to as Cubbies. But, as long as you keep helping your son pitch great games for us your name can be White Sox for all I care  . Wait, maybe not

I'm just glad you continue to post and that Sean is pitching well. I root for all Cubs..(yes, even Edmonds I guess) but Sean has a special place b/c of the NSBB connection. Congrats to you and to him, lets hope the ride continues.

Thanks! Found you guys in 2005, forgot about you all until last offseason (fall 2007). You all seem like a good crowd. So, I am going to hang around for awhile

why would someone pick another thread when this one was specifically designed to discuss his performance?

gallagher hasn't been great, but he's been better than marquis. That and his potential is good enough for probably everyone, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with pointing out flaws in his game, no matter if his dad is posting in here or not. That's pretty ridiculous, I'm sure he can take it, and if not, all he has to do is go make a thread where only positive things can be said.

I think this post pretty much nails it. We're here to talk about baseball and the Cubs. To Sean's credit, he is now part of that discussion, and that will include some criticism, both constructive and otherwise. That's probably nothing new to either Sean or his dad. In fact, I'm guessing a big part of Sean's success has been hearing the criticism, identifying the stuff that has merit, and improving on it. Let's hope that continues.

I think we're all hoping that Sean harnesses his stuff, bumps Marquis from the rotation, and becomes a long-time, dependable fixture in our rotation. (Well, everyone except Marquisfan07.) But if that doesn't happen, no one should be afraid of discussing Sean just like we do every other player on our roster.

So congratulations, Sean, and good luck. I hope you keep getting better.

I don't understand what Sean has to do to have a good start. He gave up a few warning track flies, but only 1 was hit hard. Dude is 22 all season long. I'm going to be excited anytime he doesn't completely crap the bed. In his first game, he had great movement and his stuff was on point. He showed a great K rate and this all in his 1st ML start getting knowledge of this start about an hour before he took the mound. Friday, his fastball was a lot straighter, but he was able to throw his offspeed stuff for more strikes. His K totals were down. But he pitched well without his best, which is the best sign for a young pitcher, IMO. Everything is relevant. Had Ted Lilly pitched the 2 games with the results Gallagher got, they would have been 1 horrible start and 1 decent start. Given Sean's age, level of experience, etc.... I think they were 1 decent and 1 pretty good start. Gallagher shouldn't be held to the same level of scrutiny just yet as one of the more veteran pitchers.

if negative talk really works, tell him he's worthless and he'll never amount to anything in the majors.

i agree that he has been relatively solid, but pretty much every young guy who gets called up gets extensively analyzed by the board. the only young guy i can think of who hasn't been criticized much is geovany soto, who has pretty much been the best-hitting catcher in baseball since september of last year. pretty much everyone is rooting for him and nobody has said that the kid is a non-prospect, so there's nothing to be offended about.

Where is it written that you can only be a successful pitcher if you throw 95 mph gas, or have a plus-plus offspeed pitch? Gallagher impresses me because he's progressed smartly through the system, one level per year, and just wins games at each level. I'll take that over the hype (and utter, complete failure) of a Pawelek or Samardzija with their superior "stuff" all day long.

That said, Gallagher and family aren't the ones that should feel disrespected. He's in the majors with no prior starting experience at this level. The guy that is getting ripped off is Sean Marshall, who IMO is the 4th best starting pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization. Did he kick Lou's dog or something??

what's the difference between progressing smartly through the system and progressing foolishly through the system?

I suppose the foolish progress backwards. They start in AAA and eventually work their way down to short-season independent ball.

If that's the case, then tell him I said he stinks too.

as someone who has only seen him pitch at the big league level, i'm impressed with sean and think that he has everything it takes to be a very very good pitcher in this leage.

that said, he'll need to maintain his minor league pace in k/9, if not better it, at this level if he wants to be a consistently excellent pitcher. either that, or develop a sinker or have out-of-this-world control. he simply cannot rely on fly balls to get outs from game to game.

but congrats on his performance and here's to many more!

You're a real class act. I'll buy you a Funk & Wagnall's--you're such a witty guy!

i don't know what that is, but i'll assume it's from the 1950's and politely decline.

or should i "smartly" decline...?

Does someone seriously not know what a Funk & Wagnall's is?

I find it ironic that people have a problem with a negative post about a Cubs player because his father might be posting the thread but have no problem with direct lack of civility to other posters.

I think there have been a few successful flyball pitchers at the ML level who weren't big strikeout pitchers. I don't totally disagree with the sentiment of your post, just saying that it's possible.

You're a law school grad who can't decode a common usage of "smart"

really? And you think that "foolish" is the antonym in this case?
