Some comments from Lou.

"He's still got a couple things to work on, but, yeah, he's telling us he wants to stay in the rotation," skipper Lou Piniella said.

And apparently the team was wearing Gallagher Iowa Cubs t-shirts.

Much less heralded than Fukudome's giveaway were the Iowa Cubs T-shirts the Cubs were sporting in the clubhouse. Those bore the name and number of Gallagher. For that, Gallagher thanked center fielder Jim Edmonds.

"I guess it was a giveaway they had down in Des Moines," Gallagher said. "They probably put the order in before I got called back up. They sent me a box of them. I opened it up, and Jimmy saw them and said, 'I want one.' That just started from there. Everyone just kept taking one."

That makes me hate Edmonds a little bit less

I think he knows his talent is gone so he has to do something else to help the team and hopefully stick.

I caught most of the post-game press conference, and I was really impressed with how he handled some of the questions. I didn't catch the question, but his response was that one thing he needs to work on is instead of trying to throw a better or harder slider, he needs to worry about the location. Mary-Kate or Ashley must have been with the press because the hard-hitting "OMG what's with the haircut, it's so dreamy" question popped up. I believe he also said something along the lines of "Jimmy is fun to watch", which made me nervous.

Until he jogs under one and drops it. Or, he was talking about his hitting reminding him of how a bad hitting pitcher looks at the plate.

while 7IP/1ER is great, it's not a good forecast of future starts. He was pitching with the help of gail-force winds blowing in, and he was facing the Dodgers' AA team. That said, your job is to dominate in those situations and he did. He should do well against the injured Rockies as well.

Maybe the one Kemp hit to CF would have been the only ball that left the park on a windless day. And why do people keep saying, "oh but the wind". That's one of the things that comes with Wrigley Field. He'd be stupid not to pitch to the wind blowing in. And to bring up the competition is pointless. If that was the Dodgers AA team, then that's about Gallagher's level of competition at 22 years old.

Also, I'd like to point out that Gallagher had a 10-7 GB/FB ratio. All of the flyouts came early (1st 4 outs recorded in air) or late (3 of last 5 outs recorded). Everyball was hit on the ground from 1 out in the 2nd to 1 out was gone in the 6th, and he clearly started to tire. I think the RBI single was the only ball to leave the IF over that time also. That was a great outing, no matter how you slice it.

Agreed. I thought he looked very good. When there's a strong wind blowing in, it makes sense to pitch more towards contact. It seems like he did that, which was a smart move.

The only thing that would keep him from being a solid #4 type starter (if you're into that sort of qualification) over the rest of the season is his command. If he can locate his secondary pitches, he'll do just fine.

I love you so much, Sean.

Creepy.

It's like the love we have for other good players on the Cubs. I don't find that creepy.

I agree. I love Sean Gallagher. I love all the Cubs.

Romantically.

Sean Gallagher (3-1), whose rookie stature is fading in the surroundings, repeated the same mantra.

''You can have all the confidence in the world with the way we're playing,'' he said. ''Look at the last few weeks. We're always on base and always scoring.

''Pitching is just damage control. I just try to stay aggressive on the mound and let the defense work behind me. Let your offense get back on the field and score some runs.

''It's unbelievable to go out there every fifth day and play with these guys. It's a gift.''

I'm sure it is nice to have a good offense as a pitcher and hopefully he keeps his confidence and continues to challenge hitters. Hopefully when Hill comes back from his injury he'll be fine and doing the same.
