I don't want to envisage what this discussion will turn in to when Sean has a bad outing (which he inevitably will, he knows that, and his dad knows that).

As far as I'm concerned: good job so far, and congrats (to both) on his first win. The things to work on have been extensively pointed out in this thread (although I'm sure both Sean and his dad were already aware of them, and if not, Rothschild is getting paid to do that), so I won't rehash.

I don't see any group on this board that would have an "I told you so, jerkfaces" explosion if Sean had a bad game. I don't see how this thread would go bad if that happened

Agreed. There isn't anyone here that wants to see him do poorly.

No one may want to see him do poorly, but it sure seems like guys love to pull up a post from weeks, months, or years earlier to say "see I told you so." Sometimes people start entire threads for this purpose.

Yeah, that's getting a little old.

Yeah, that's getting a little old.

True. But it works both ways. The "Wood sucks" (or whatever it's called) thread is about 6 pages long b/c every time he gets a save, a bunch of people call out Bud House. Like we all didn't know it was an overreaction when it was first created.

It reminds me of the Hogcard and Z thread back on cubs.com. He was a Card fan that posted/trolled there and said Z would never be any good and after each Z outing, it was brought back up. It's a little different when it's a Cub fan though and it doesn't really thrill me to see this Wood sucks thread brought up after each save.

Yeah, but that thread is only 2 weeks old, and it's only been "brought back" twice since then and most of the thread isn't even related to the budhouse comments. The guy who started it has made multiple threads about his hatred for the sham closer. It's not like a one-time overreaction that people are hanging over his head.

That was one example. I'm just making the point that if you don't want people to make "I told you so" posts when a player is doing badly, you shouldn't have 5 "I told you so" posts every time Wood gets a save or Soriano hits a HR.

I agree.

Some threads become de facto player threads, regardless of the origins. It's the nature of message boards.

Look folks I'm not "thin skinned" when it comes to people expressing their opinions about Sean. I am Sean's biggest fan along with critic and I have no problem telling him what I think about any of his performances. All I wanted to do was reply about the comment about "lots of balls hit to the track". This gentleman expressed his views and I just came back and stated that with the wind blowing out on friday that Sean at least kept them in the park. This person apologized and its over and we can agree to disagree. As I have said many times before Sean has had lots worse stated about him and I will tell you that he will read this but he just uses all this negative talk for motivation. \:D/

as someone who has only seen him pitch at the big league level, i'm impressed with sean and think that he has everything it takes to be a very very good pitcher in this leage.

that said, he'll need to maintain his minor league pace in k/9, if not better it, at this level if he wants to be a consistently excellent pitcher. either that, or develop a sinker or have out-of-this-world control. he simply cannot rely on fly balls to get outs from game to game.

but congrats on his performance and here's to many more!

I think there have been a few successful flyball pitchers at the ML level who weren't big strikeout pitchers. I don't totally disagree with the sentiment of your post, just saying that it's possible.

i really don't think that there are any that have been consistently successful, to be honest. i can't think of any.

what's the difference between progressing smartly through the system and progressing foolishly through the system?

You're a real class act. I'll buy you a Funk & Wagnall's--you're such a witty guy!

i don't know what that is, but i'll assume it's from the 1950's and politely decline.

or should i "smartly" decline...?

You're a law school grad who can't decode a common usage of "smart"

really? And you think that "foolish" is the antonym in this case?

since the usage of the word "smart" made no sense, i didn't know exactly what the proper antonym was. sorry.

Where is it written that you can only be a successful pitcher if you throw 95 mph gas, or have a plus-plus offspeed pitch? Gallagher impresses me because he's progressed smartly through the system, one level per year, and just wins games at each level. I'll take that over the hype (and utter, complete failure) of a Pawelek or Samardzija with their superior "stuff" all day long.

Since one definition of "smart" is "quick and brisk" and the bolded section explains how he was using the word, I'm guessing that's what he meant.

Remind me to ask for you as my opponent litigator the next time I have a contract dispute case that hinges on the contract's verbage. Or should I just say "wording" in lieu of verbage, does that makes things easier for you?

I can assure you that I'm merely brinoch and not a semi-famous personage, television writer or sports-blogger.

Just a little Ace Ventura reference. No harm intended.
