The Cubs have called up Sean Gallagher from Triple-A Iowa and sent down Rich Hill.

Gallagher will be available to pitch today in St. Louis.

Hill didn't last through the first inning of the Cubs' extra-inning loss to the Cardinals on Friday.

"Hill can't start like this in the big leagues," manager Lou Piniella said. "C'mon. Every time he pitches, it's an adventure. He's doing his best, but we have no bullpen. I don't know what the solution is, but I can't start him anymore until this thing gets taken care of."

The solution, for now, is Gallagher. More to come.

Hopefully Gallagher as the long man only is for the next couple of days while the bullpen is tired, and he either becomes a starter in Chicago or Iowa again. It will be interesting to see who is slated to pitch in Hill's next turn, if it's Lieber, Marshall, or Gallagher.

I'm hoping it's Gallagher that gets the start. I'm not optimistic. Marshall deserves the spot over Lieber, but I'd definitely give it to Lieber because Marshall hasn't thrown more than an inning in like a month and a half.

I called this one in the first last night.

I knew it was coming. My hope is Gallagher will get the next start and Lieber stays in the pen, though with the guys making decisions for the Cubs, Gallagher likely will be in the pen with Lieber moving to the rotation.

Lieber deserves it..He's been good ever since the first day of ST...Seems like he feels real good and in the zone back in Chicago..Hopefully he can give us some real good starts..

I really, REALLY hate this organization sometimes. Maybe the Indians should send C.C. Sabathia down too. Hell, the Marlins even keep trotting out Andrew Miller despite the fact that he's getting rocked. The defending NL Champs keep going with Ubaldo Jimenez and he's walked 22 batters. All these guys have also been giving up a lot of runs, which Rich Hill has not been doing. He has a 4.12 ERA. I understand he isn't going deep into games and our bullpen is "taxed", but that's mostly Lou's fault. He'll leave Marquis out there to give up 10 hits in 5 innings, but will pull Hill in the first inning because he walked a run in. Then on top of that he uses a converted starter for only one batter per game. Sorry for ranting, but this is just so incredibly ridiculous. Let's hope Hill goes down to AAA and has a couple solid starts and limits the BB so we can get our 2nd best starting pitcher back into the rotation.

Sean's dad, have you heard anything on how they plan to use Sean?

I must apologize to everybody but we got the call from Sean about 1:30 this morning. Sean told me I couldn't report it as you all know what happened last time!!!! [-X

I know Sean is looking forward to today as I spoke with him early this morning but I haven't heard anything about the Cubs plans for him. I know that he will do whatever it takes to help this team and must say again that his parents are so proud of him......... \:D/

Lieber getting his first start against the Reds is not good news. He probably matches up with them worse than just about any team with all that left-handed thunder (remember that Lieber is one of those starters who has pretty big splits). I think he'll be fine against some other lineups, but he might struggle on Wednesday.

I don't mind Lieber starting overall. I don't mind limiting Marshall's innings right now, because hopefully that will keep him healthy when a starter goes down. Gallagher as the long man though is something that he is just not suited for. Hopefully he can succeed anyway, but they really shouldn't have called him up to be a long-term reliever.

No offense intended, obviously... but I really wish your son wasn't coming up under these circumstances.

Lieber to start in Cincy Wednesday. Gallagher the long man.

That is one of the dumbest ideas I've heard since Dusty managed. Lieber is great against RH-heavy lineups, but the Reds are going to trot out a LH-heavy lineup that hits lots of homeruns. Not only that, but Lieber hasn't been stretched out yet this season.

At the very least, Gallagher has been stretched out and could probably last longer than Lieber at this point. Moving him to the long man spot is unbelievably short-sighted.

Lol. Heres an idea, we already have a long man in the pen if Lieber goes to the rotation, so why not call up a pitcher who is actually used to pitching out of the pen? Oh yea I forgot Sean Marshall is only a loogy now, can only face that 1 batter a game. This organization needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom and bring in some people with a [expletive] clue on baseball making decisions.

Oh congrats Gallagher, I wish you were starting though.

I agree. It's an extremely dumb decision. We should have no problem winning the division, but I'm afraid our chances aregoing to be severely damaged by idiotic decision making on the part of Lou and Jim.
