Once again, Brewers fans are chiming in about how the Cubs are "catching all the breaks", a familiar refrain from 2007.

Their main beef seems to be the Cubs schedule. This would be legit if not for the fact that theirs has been nearly as easy. They point at the Pirates (never mind that if not for the Cubs the Bucs would have a winning record). But the Crew have gotten the Giants (BAD) for a series, and the Reds (just as bad as the Pirates so far) six times. And while STL is doing well, they are far from a powerhouse. They got the Mets, we got the Mets (and while we missed Santana, we got Maine, and Figueroa who was pitching very well), the difference being that we blew them out both wins. We got Philly, who is pretty clearly a stronger team than any of the other teams the Brewers have played, and on the road.

Or maybe it's that the Cubs have been playing at home a lot, except that the Cubs don't lean on their home field like a crutch as the Brewers do (44 wins at home in 2007, 41 on the road compared to 51 wins at home for the Brewers and 32 on the road).

Or maybe it's those other breaks, like 2 of our best 3 (Lilly, Hill) starting pitchers sucking badly for most of the month, or 2 of our best relievers (Howry, Wuertz) stinking and causing our BP to be short, or Soriano getting hurt (and sucking), Ramirez getting off to a slow start and things not going according to plan with Pie.

Say that the Cubs have been hot offensively and should cool off, but don't come with that whiny "catching all the breaks" garbage. The Cubs sure didn't catch any last year, and relatively speaking, they're not catching many this year.

Oh yeah we generally have caught all the breaks. Like the way Mark prior and Kerry Wood went from being super good, to super unhealthy. Or the fact that Derrek Lee gets hurt and costs him two years worth of power production. Or everyone of our top picks the past few years being so great. Oh wait none of our guys from the last what, 4 drafts, have contributed to our success. Enough of their crap.

Well, I was referring more to this year. If you look back over the past few years, you'd have to be on drugs to say the Cubs have caught all the breaks.

One of the things thats good is that we haven't gotten one of those "We should have won this game" losses that teams get 4-5 times every year. Last year we had about 4 of them to this point.

I'm sure those will come. You tend not to have those when you are winning 8-1 or 13-6.

That isn't a result of catching breaks, though.

Why on earth would anyone complain about an easy schedule for the first 12% of the season? Do they not realize that in the end, the schedule difficulty pretty much evens out in the end for division rivals? And by "end" I mean 142 games from now.

But it doesn't. We should have got three games at home against the Mets and not 4 there.

It goes to show that there are plenty of Brewers fans who clearly don't know anything about baseball. They're trying to get a "built-in excuse" ready as to why they won't win the division. NM it maybe simply because the Cubs are perhaps a better team? No-no that can't be to Brewers fans, it must be because the Cubs are "lucky."

Well when one thinks of lucky, usually the Cubs are the first thing that pops in the head. Also Vice Versa.

Only Cubs fans don't know anything about baseball. Like, duh.

Milwaukee's had a tougher schedule to start, but it isn't that big a gap.

SOS

When you consider that their SOS is buoyed by 5 games against the Cards, who don't stand to remain a .600 Winning Pct. team, and the Cubs SOS is from facing the Mets and Phillies, who are slightly under where they're expected to be, the difference is pretty much nil.

The win in Philly was a gift. Phantom HR and Utley's error in extras.

Other than that, it's just been great execution.

Maybe caught a little bit of a break in the Pirates game as well when they had a runner on 3rd in the 9th inning, put a perfect bunt down, and the runner didn't run. Every team though gets breaks like that on individual plays.

This is a gem:

I sense some nervousness around here about the Cubs already being in first place. I'm here to tell you that is exactly what we want. Last year, I think us being so far ahead for so long was exactly what the Cubs needed to win the division, as all the pressure was on us from May until early Sep. This year, the table will turn. The Cubs will have all the pressure of leading the division from early on and the 100 year WS thing on their backs. The Cubs are the worst franchise in professional sports history at handling pressure. We have a real favorable schedule in July and September, so we will be able to make ground without the pressure of leading the division. The Cubs in first for most of the summer, with the their players already focusing on the WS, is exactly where we want them.

Yes, they've got us right where they want us. You always want to spend the summer playing catch up.

How much do you think the 100 years actually does weigh on this Cubs team? Maybe a fraction of a fraction of one percent?

I actually heard a quote from Derrek Lee where he said how the Cubs are the best team in the league and quite possibly the best team ever, but he knows they can't win because they haven't won in a 100 years. It's actually a proven fact that the Cubs can't win. I mean, they are the Cubs.
